  4. Speaking of romance, this reminds me of one of my favorite Silver Age DC romance covers, from Gene Colan (not my copy, though I have a lower grade one somewhere):
  5. This is a great deal, so I hope someone buys it. I already have a full run of WW/Jonah Hex, so it's not for me, but if anyone out there is on the fence, this series is great!
  6. That's a great Cardy cover, but I generally consider 15 cent books to be late Silver Age. Still, it's debatable, and any excuse to see more great romance covers is worth it. Similarly, Falling in Love #99 is a legit classic romance cover, but it's a late 12 cent issue, so firmly Silver Age I think. There are a few late Silver Age books that I think are up there, first and foremost Young Romance #150, which is an all-timer in my book. This is the classic DC Silver Age Romance cover in my opinion: Other late silver age books in the discussion include Heart Throbs #120, which has a crazy mono-color domestic violence cover by Neal Adams that I think is undervalued, and Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love #1 and Sinister House of Secret Love #1 are up there. I also have a personal soft sport for Young Love #68: As for bronze Age, I honestly just don't think Bronze Age romance has gotten the attention it deserves. It's hard to pinpoint many real "classics" because most people have just never looked at them. A few issues that deserve more eyes on them: My Love #14 is the more famous Woodstock cover, but Falling in Love #118 also has a Woodstock cover that is excellent, and predates My Love #14 by a year. Love Stories #150 has a great Jay Scott Pike cover, and is not easy to find. This is a book I think could earn classic cover status if anybody paid attention to this era of romance books (this is not my copy): Other books that have gone under the radar a little and I think deserve more attention are My Love #25 and #31, both of which have feminist movement covers. There's also Young Love #104, my favorite romance comic ever: And Young Love #124, which I have seen get some play because of the women-in-jail motif. Jay Scott Pike and Nick Cardy combined to do a bunch of great covers right at the end of Falling in Love, particularly #136, #137, #141, and #143. I'm sure I'm missing some. And there are some cool Charlton books, but I'm not too familiar with them other than Haunted Love #5 maybe, which is more of a horror cover than a romance cover (not my copy):
  7. Romantic Adventures #50 comes to mind. Romantic Adventures #49 is pretty great too, though not quite as classic as #50. Romantic Hearts #9. There are a few more that I am just blanking on, but there are some other classic "scandal" type non-Baker romance covers. There's one in a diner that I just can't quite recall the title/issue # of that's pretty great.
  8. Are there any comic book stores in southern Vermont? I've been searching online for awhile and am coming up totally blank. Surely the good people of Vermont have somewhere to buy comics at? Anyone have any suggestions, or know of a comic book store in southern Vermont?
  9. I don't even know where to start with Charlton romance books. There are, like, 400 million different titles, all of which seemed to run for decades. Are there any key or valuable issues of Charlton romance books? Does anybody collect Charlton romance? The only series I'm actively collecting is Haunted Love, but there must be some more interesting books in this huge mass of stuff!
  10. Well, he did also say "hard to find in high grade," which applies. B&V was distributed via newsstand to an audience that was mostly kid readers and not comic collectors. It's much harder to find in grade than superhero books from the same period. Also, the print run wasn't that high. Books from this era of Archie are relatively scarce in general as the title was probably only selling around 50-60k copies at this point, compared to an average Marvel book doing 100-150k. But your larger point is correct, it's not as rare per se than some of these books with super small indy print runs.
  11. Front cover is great, back cover I think looks like it has some minor issues - not sure if that's dirt or faint foxing, or dust shadow along the spine. I think 7.0/7.5. Great looking comic book!
  12. That is a small tear at top left corner, extends to just above the M in Ms. in the banner.
  13. Another factor in the rise of popularity for Night Nurse is that it's really good. I also heard jokes for decades about Night Nurse. When I finally got a copy about 10 years ago and read it, I was blown away by how good it is. The big problem with the book when it came out was there was no real genre for it. It's not really romance per se. It's really a prime time soap opera. It's basically Grey's Anatomy. So it fell between the cracks, and Marvel didn't really have a system in place to promote it. If it had been published by DC, which still had a line of successful Romance Comics running at the time, it might have done better, as the closest thing to Night Nurse in comic book terms were DC's serialized soap opera style stories from the late 60's like "3 Girls" in the pages of Heart Throbs. If you like prime time soap operas, though, Night Nurse is about the best you can find in comics. NFL SuperPro... actually, the one similarity I see is that it's between genres as well, as it's not really a sports comic or a superhero comic, but trying to be both. I have a hard time imagining it getting big, though. There are other books which, like Night Nurse, have been the brunt of jokes for years, but unlike Night Nurse, US 1 and Team America have never had a sniff of becoming popular. NFL SUperPro belongs with those books, I think.
  14. I have this as a 2.5/3.0 as well. I lean toward a 3.0, but it depends a little on how the staining is in person. PQ looks about the same as my copy, which is about a 2.5. I've heard this era of DC books has a lot of issues with PQ, so I think this is probably par for the course.
