  1. This time around we do something a little different, as I talk to a new reader/collector about her experiences getting into comics more than two decades after being briefly introduced to the hobby as a kid. We also discuss the stories she first read as a kid, particularly the Wonder Woman: Space Pirate storyline from Bill Messner-Loebs in Wonder Woman #66-72. Here it is. Hope you enjoy!
  2. Puzzled by those saying this is nothing like Empire. Only other thing I will say is Luke was amazing. Blew everyone else off the screen.
  3. Yup, looks real to me. I have an Avengers #1 I got signed by Stan in 1989, and it looks like this: This one doesn't have the date, but another book I got signed the same day he wrote '89 next to his name just like you have here.
  4. Any of you spinner rack collector types have an idea what the going rate is for a 60's/70's white 5-sided Hey Kids, Comics! rack is these days? We've been looking at some online for Christmas and the prices seem pretty steep compared to what I was expecting, but it's been several years since I last was in the market for a spinner rack.
  5. Avengers #87 is the origin of the Black Panther. An issue that I think flies under the radar. Other less important books might be Avengers #62, which is a Black Panther spotlight issue with the first Man-Ape,; and ToS #97-99 and Captain America #100, an arc which has two Panther covers and leads into Black Panther joining the Avengers in Avengers #52. And there's a cool 2-part Panther arc in Avengers #73-74 which also introduces Panther's long time love interest Monica Lynne.
  6. My girlfriend and I are watching it - I have read some of the original series, she has never heard of these characters before. We both like the show, but she is frustrated that it's moving way, way too slowly.
  7. I had some major life disruptions that delayed this significantly, but the podcast is now back on track! Here's the long-awaited conclusion of our two-part discussion of the Cap's Kooky Quartet era of Avengers! http://classiccomics.podbean.com/e/classic-comics-forum-podcast-16-avengers-16-28-caps-kooky-quartet-part-2/
  8. Not so! I went to see this with my girlfriend, who does not read the comics or entertainment websites, and when we left the theater almost the first thing she said was, "what was going on with Superman's face? Something was wrong there, it was weird." And when I told her about the mustache, she thought it was hilarious. As for the movie... So, I hated Man of Steel, I thought Batman v Superman was a train wreck, and Suicide Squad was complete garbage. Wonder Woman I liked overall but didn't love, I thought it was a great performance/character in a very mediocre story. I had very low expectations for Justice League, and I got about what I expected. I thought it was really bad. However, it wasn't as painful to watch as MoS, BvS, or SS, which I chalk up to Joss Whedon's influence. You could feel him straining at the Snyder material to try and wrestle the movie into something more fun and upbeat, especially with Superman, who they clearly were trying to save from all the Snyder did with him. Very little of it worked for me, but it was nice to have a hint of color on screen, and Flash was kind of funny at times. Cyborg was okay too. But the fact that Whedon Febreezed it doesn't change the fact that he was working with poo to begin with. Not good! But maybe a step in the right direction if they continue moving forward with this mess. Here's hoping.
  9. The Mad House issue is the 1st Sabrina, while the Pals n Gals issue is the first Josie. Josie #45 is the first appearance of the Pussycats, and first appearance of Valerie. and B&V #75 is an infamous issue where the girls sell their souls to the devil to win Archie's love.
  10. The latest episode of Earth's Mightiest Podcast is now available, where I tackles Avengers #16-19 in the first part of a two-part look at the Cap's Kooky Quartet era of Avengers! http://classiccomics.podbean.com/e/classic-comics-forum-podcast-15-avengers-16-28-caps-kooky-quartet-part-1/
  11. For me it's the 52 BIG Pages! 25 cent logo from DC comics. If the price is right I will buy any book with that logo - and the 48 pages/25 cent ones as well, but it's the 52 BIG Pages that I really love. Best cover design era ever for me.
  12. I don't mind it on low grade copies. Not a fan of signatures on the cover of higher grade copies from Silver Age and earlier.
  13. I also can't believe this nonsense is coming up again. Suffice it to say I think #60 is pretty clearly the first appearance of the team for all the reasons that have been debated ad nauseam. I wrote a response to some of the nonsense being reposted here about #54, but all of this has been said before so... anyone who's interested can just go back and read the last 50 pages.
  14. I also agree this is more likely early 90's. There is a flea market dealer near me who has a spinner rack with this same logo/design on the topper, but he wouldn't sell it to me. I wonder if this was the last mass produced spinner rack?
  15. My romance collection is mostly lower grade readers, but I just lucked out on a couple higher grade books from eBay.
  16. If you ever wanted to listen to three hours of discussion about the 80's revival of DC's Blackhawk, now is your chance!! This episode is the last of three about this classic series. Next episode: Cap's Kooky Quartet! 17. Doh, my girlfriend's family lives a mile away from your store and we were just there visiting - one week before you opened. next time!
  18. The second part of this epic three-part examination of Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle's 1980's Blackhawk run is now available to listen to. I guarantee this is the only podcast in the world that will deliver three hours of conversation about Mark Evanier's Blackhawk! In this middle installment, we start going through the actual issues themselves, discussing #251-259 in detail. Enjoy!
  19. Here's a master list of all the episodes of the Classic Comics Forum Podcast so far! As new episodes are released, i will update this list as well as post new entries for new episodes. 20. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks very much for listening!
  21. I have been beating the drum on JLA #75 for years. It's essentially the first appearance of the Silver Age Black Canary. Thanks to DC"s multiple universes, though, it's not as clear as a lot of other character's first appearances. However, it was later recognized officially as the first appearance of the Silver Age Black Canary in a really convoluted retcon just before Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the prior two issues, Black Canary is still on Earth-2 as part of the JSA. During that storyline, her husband, Larry Lance, is killed. At the end of #74, she decides to start a new life on Earth-1 by going to Earth-1 with the Justice League. #75 is Black Canary's first issue on Earth-1. it's also her first issue as a member of the Justice League. More importantly, it's the first appearance of her Canary Cry, with the explanation that traveling between worlds somehow triggered some kind of mutation. And finally, her relationship with Green Arrow begins in this issue, though it's subtle, as the two of them co-narrate the tale. It's a very clear breaking point between the old Golden Age version of the character and the new Silver Age version reimagined by Denny O'Neil. It's also the second appearance of the new look Green Arrow, after B&B #85, also written by O'Neil. It was later retconned that the Canary who came to Earth-1 is actually the daughter of the Earth-2 Canary, and she had been in stasis in limbo because her canary cry couldn't be controlled on Earth-2 or something. it's too weird to explain. This retcon was deemed necessary because all the other heroes in the JSA were pushing 65 by that point, only on Earth-1, Black Canary was still young. Importantly for viewing #75 as a first appearance, that retcon remained in place post-Crisis - though the details were obviously different, post-Crisis the modern Dinah Lance was the daughter of the original Black Canary, Dinah Drake Lance, who had been a member of the JSA in her youth. The idea that there were two Black Canarys ultimately came from the major changes made to the character in JLA #75. Her powers, personality, and relationship with Green Arrow all date to this issue. I think it's absolutely the key issue for Black Canary fans after Flash Comics #92. Having said all that, I'd bet my hat the price bump actually just is because the issue has an iconic black cover that's really hard to find in grade.
  22. Thanks very much for the info, guys, I appreciate it! For what it's worth, this copy has a nice date stamp on the back cover, so if the information is of any interest to Matt Baker collectors, that arrival date is July 18.
  23. I don't know much about Baker, so I'm just trying to learn a little more about a book I picked up today. I was at a comic shop I don't normally go to and happened to find a comic in the romance section that looked suspiciously like Matt Baker art, so I bought it. I've done a little looking around online and it seems my hunch was correct, but I haven't found a lot about scarcity or value or how desirable this one is. I have a decent size collection of romance comics, but my focus has been Silver and Bronze Age DC so I'm wading in the depths with this one. If anyone can point me in the right direction to learn more about this book, I'd be obliged!
  24. Some potential additions off the top of my head: Astonishing Tales #25 Avengers #93, 100 Conan #24 Fear #19 Night Nurse #1 - not a joke! Special Marvel Edition #15 Tomb of Dracula #1, 10 I didn't see any magazines on your list - there are several of interest, like Savage Tales #1, SSoC #1, the Punisher origin issue, the first Star-Lord, 1st Rocket Raccoon.. I forget all the issue numbers for the magazines.
