  1. I was just checking some census numbers and noticed the still low numbers for a couple of the bronze horror keys. HOM 174 has 13 graded copies ranging from 8.0 to 9.6, while HOS 81 has 6 total graded copies. HOS 81 only has 2 8.5s, 1 9.2 and 3 9.4s.

I wonder when/if there will be a spike or even modest increase in those numbers. Maybe not necessarily all high grade, I mean there is not much even in the way of "misses" in the middle/lower grades. You would think there might be more copies in any grade considering each is a $100+ book in 9.2 in the OS. And each brings a big slabbed premium for the most part.

Any thoughts? Are basically all the pedigree copies of those books slabbed? I see Pacific Coast and Oakland are indicated for HOM 174. Only Pacific Coast is registered as a GPA sale for HOS 81.

  2. Our Army At War 279, I think page 13 (has a "20" on it) by Russ Heath. My only Sgt. Rock piece of original art (and I don't even have the book yet crazy.gif ).

If someone has some Kubert stuff, I would love to see it. A Rock action page by Kubert is right at the top of my OA want list.

  3. Ack! That GI 245 DOLLAR COMIC!!!!!!! Must seek it. Dang you for expanding my DC BA to this title. tongue.gifwink.gif893applaud-thumb.gif

sorry.gif I do love the DC Dollar G.I. Combats though. What a cool looking format, just hellish to find in NM. Here's a few more.

*note* I think Army at War and Battle Classics also have material included in the Cancelled Comic Cavalcade.

I just looked them up and CCC #2 has the covers to issue 2 of AAW and issue 3 of Battle Classics. Here's my AAW 1:

  5. Detective 502 Death(?) of Mlle. Marie

This is an odd one. It's the second part of a two parter (I only have the second part) in which it turns out that Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred, was knocking the proverbial boots with Mlle. Marie back in the day. It goes into a whole thing about Mlle. Marie possibly drowning right after, but not until after she gave birth to their love child. 893whatthe.gif

Don't know if this storyline has been brought up anywhere else in the DC universe. Wild, wacky early 80s DC stuff...

  7. To go along with what I think is the first issue of the unmasked Unknown Soldier (let me know if I am wrong in this assumption - I don't have the complete run and Overstreet doesn't indicate any particular issue),

    Yes, it is!

Sweet, thanks for confirming. I wish OS would break that out/indicate it somewhere. For instance, it seems more important than some of the Enemy Ace reprint info they list in the run.

They do list a lot of good stuff for bronze war though. I quickly went through the new OS and the Big 5 guide I think I mentioned earlier (along with checking out Mike's DC Cover Gallery) and jotted down some quick issue info for important DC bronze war (and related) books.

It turned out to be quite a bit and I am sure I missed stuff, so let me know where I erred and what I missed. One thing, I'm sure there is some comic age crossover with some of the books. The list makes me realize how few of these issues I currently have.

I am putting together a short list of some of the key bronze issues. I'll post it and see if what else people can add. I do not have anywhere near all of them, so I may be off.

I am sure there has to be some Big 5 fans on the board who continued with the titles that were left in the 70s/early 80s. I'd like to devote more attention to these books, but that damned bronze horror keeps pulling me back.

    G.I. Combat 232

    766273-gic232.jpg

  9. very cool--so is this like the first unmasking of the Unknown Soldier? I read the title in the 80s and never saw him unmasked. I loved war books as well but my concentration during my readership days was primarily G.I. Combat, Sgt Rock, and Unknown Soldier.

I think it is, but no one has confirmed it and I cannot find it in the guide - maybe I am just blind.

Star Spangled War Stories turns into The Unknown Soldier with issue 205. Our Army At War turns into Sgt. Rock with #302. They keep the numbering from the previous title.

Here's my copy of US 205. Great dark Kubert cover. Big chip out of the right edge, it's still hangin on though. frustrated.gif

I have a digital pic of the first page of the issue.

Nice work from Gerry Talaoc. The story is pretty brutal too. The US has to cap a Jewish girl at point blank range to keep his identity secret. I thought the death was going to be a trick or something, but no - he killed her to make sure his mission which included saving innocents wasn't exposed.

  11. Love that cover BassGMan. The looks on the faces - just great Kubert stuff.

I'll double post these G.I. Combats here as well. Bronzejohnny, how about putting that SSWS 151 of yours up in here?

While not the most important, the Adams G.I. Combat covers are sweet and smaller "keys" in 70s war books:

    G.I. Combat 201

    765924-gi201.jpg

    G.I. Combat 202

    765925-gi202.jpg

I like to collect the bronze G.I. Combats because so many were Dollar Comics.

The upper book Dollar Comic-kind of damage is seen in both of my copies and it took me a while to find them that nice. They are Manitoba copies from Doug Sulipa - he graded them both out at 9.0.

  12. I really love Kubert's cover art on most of the BA war books, and the stories seem cool. I guess I am just leery to get started on this genre cause I know I will never stop and I am not even close to finishing my BA horror collection.

It could have been detrimental to DC war books to have the same artist do so many of the covers, but I really think in the end the consistency and quality that is provided by a master like Joe Kubert only helps to elevate the titles. His style is brilliant and the images were always first rate.
