I don't think we would be speculating too much to say TOD sales probably blow HOM out of the water at their peaks then? What surprises me is Kaluta/I Vampire covers in HOM getting outsold by the Ghost issues. screwy.gif

I meant Ghosts in case anyone thought I was talking about Ghost Rider. That he outsold both of them doesn't surprise me.

  2. Well, here's the other problem, the Ghost Rider numbers only start at 1979, when the DC horror anthology books were on their way out:

    1979

    H o Mystery 264-275 85,569

    Ghost Rider 34 - 39 135,107

    1980

    H o Mystery 276-287 88,876

    Ghost Rider 40- 51 132,129

    Ghosts (DC) 84 - 95 95,317

    1981

    H o Mystery 288-299 86,962

    Ghost Rider 52 -63 121,227

    Ghosts (DC) 96-107 87,537

    Unexpected 206-217 83,000

  3. Cool, I just won this auction. Not really familiar with it but the price was right and heck.... it's Frazetta! Sorry that this is technically late Siver, but it looks BA to me so here I am. Anyone know anything about these books? Too bad #1 wasn't in the deal.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6542644941&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

Very good deal. 3 is everywhere (it's the only one I have), but getting the two for only $15 is a great deal. I believe all four issues in the run are Frazetta covers.

Now you have to get them all! Be careful not to get any of the reprints if auction scans are not as good as that one. I have seen some sellers try to pull that.

They reprinted those? Are the covers substantially different on the repros?

Different enough. But they could be confusing if you didn't know better.

  4. So who's gonna bust out their copy of that book (Standard Catalogue?) and drop some "publication number data" knowledge on us about TOD and HOM?

    hi.gif

I just keyed in a boatload of data, but lost DSL connection before saving! frustrated.gif I'll eventually retype as a text file, then cut & paste here.

The problem is the Standard catalog has no data for ToD, Frankenstein, WbN, etc. The closest they come is Ghost Rider. sorry.gif

I bought a little battery backup at Staples for my PC. We get waaaay too many power outages/brownouts in Florida to not have one. Came in handy twice today due to storms. Go get one!

I guess the question would be - is Ghost Rider considered a "Mystery" comic? Or at least, considered so by the Marvel people who put the claim on the TOD covers. If it was and it still beat out HOM in sales, then TOD certainly would have, going by their cover claims that is was #1. Or something like that. crazy.gif

  6. Well I'm sure there was a little hype to it, but there are some stats to support that. It ran for 70 issues - thats longer than WWBN or any other horror series Marvel put out aside from maybe Ghost Rider and hes went a little more superhero IMO.

As well I think its the best Marvel in terms of quality. Colan and Wolfman stayed on this thing for the entire run, more or less and it seems to me they really put all their effort into this book.

There also seem to be a lot of HG copies of TOD floating around which would support a higher print run possibility.

So who's gonna bust out their copy of that book (Standard Catalogue?) and drop some "publication number data" knowledge on us about TOD and HOM?

  7. I guess Marvel's "Snapple" series would be Monster of Frankenstein.

I always thought ToD was the most popular BA horror series in terms of sales, but I could be dead wrong. I am sure someone can straighten that out.

I have always though it was also. Due mainly to it having things like this "ribbon" on many covers:

Or it could have just been hype. confused-smiley-013.gif

Did those turn out to be restored/trimmed? 893whatthe.gif The Bats 244 went out a few days ago for a refund....

I took them out again tonight and they looked okay to me, but I am no expert. Maybe I'll waste one of my CS entries this year on the 8 and see what gives.

    Thanks. acclaim.gif

....don't knock mambly pambly bidding, high proxy bids can get you into trouble! poke2.gif

You think $20 is a high proxy bid? screwy.gifdevil.gifflowerred.gif

  9. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Looks familiar....

Incremental shiller!!! Stick to hoarding Bats 227 and lay off the DC war books!!! poke2.gif

893whatthe.gif27_laughing.gif I have learned my lesson and will stick to my side of the fence!

    ....for now. devil.gif

It WAS such a high dollar book ....

He then graciously let me win some restored Weird Wars...

JK. Andy felt really bad about his mambly pambly bidding and went above and beyond to make up for it. He's a good egg thumbsup2.gif

  10. I sold my 9.6 on eBay for $193.61 and I know that banner got around $250 for his. I was sure that it was on eBay as well but for some reason, it's not listed in the GPA.

Still a strong price for a book that isn't that scarce! crazy.gif

I wasn't aware of drbanner's sale. Was it in the last year?

And no, the book doesn't seem to be scare in general, but I still cannot find a raw NM for myself. Christo_pull_hair.gif

Yes, it was within a year of my sale which happened in November of last year. poke2.gif

Maybe I'll buy Chuck's "Near Mint" one for $24 plus the PHILLY discount..... 893scratchchin-thumb.gifinsane.gif

The HOM 201 cover is one of my favorites; I love the baby demon's expression. But, 5k is pretty pricey. Is that a realistic price range for his covers? confused-smiley-013.gif

The seller referenced this Kaluta sale when mentioning his price expectations:

    Kaluta Cover on Heritage

I guess it's a really fair price. That cover is from 1984, and is Bold Adventures #3 from Pacific Comics. Kaluta's Shadow pages have sold on Heritage for $1500-$3500. Now, where did I put that $5k I had lying around? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I was not sure what his horror covers were going for to tell you the truth and thought $5k was a tad high for a starting price as well. But I really have nothing solid to base that opinion on. I do know that the art for the Detective 423 cover sold for under $5k, I believe, last year or the year before through one of the major OA auction sites (I forget which - if someone has a link to the auction that would be cool). You can see it here: 'Tec 423

I think that was a bargain comparatively and wish I had seen it. I would have been tempted to break my self-imposed limit on OA/comic spending. That is my favorite Kaluta cover of any genre...
