  1. John,

Did you say you essentially have a HG Phantom Collector set? Are they CGC certified? I've missed out on a bunch of issues lately but would eventually like to have a set. #10 has a ROCKIN' Neal Adams cover (reminds me of HOM 174 with the beckoning gesture) and I never see a high grade copy, and there's none in the census.

Could this be the equivalent of HOM 190 of this series? Somebody please prove me wrong.

I bought a CGC 9.0 copy over a year ago. Seems overgraded to me, plus it has C-OW pages (the best of both worlds). All of the raw copies posted so far look better than my slabbed one.

    Nice copies guys. thumbsup2.gif

  2. That WH 20 is one of my favotite covers. thumbsup2.gif

When I first saw that cover I thought it was pretty run-of-the-mill, but the more I looked at it the more I realized how creepy it really is. Less slasher and more serial killer. I got the Oakland copy a while back from Metro b/c I liked it so much.

  3. What is the relevance of this? I can certinaly appreciate the 666 vs 6666 relationship. Keith, hard core ghoul that he is, certianloy appreciated it. What is the issue here? We are looking not at the shopworn 666 but a new, shiny, more - may I say - sterling - 6666.

As another hard core horror collector the relevance is not lost.

    Dag freaking nab it!

    Is certianloy pronounced sir-shun-loy?

And I think I get your point. It's like how eleven is one louder than ten, right? confused-smiley-013.gif

  4. Yeah, they both have decent gloss. The colors are really the 141's strongest point. Don't get me wrong, I love Kubert's art, but that cover wouldn't be half as cool without those eye-popping colors. I love the purple and reds. For some reason I really like purple covers. That color always seems to work well on comics. confused-smiley-013.gif

Yup, totally agree on the colors being the best part of that Kubert cover. Dude's arm is waaaay too long and always catches my eye.

  5. gossip.gif It's still wrong....

Actually, it can't be "wrong" because if you read the posts neither OF or myself ever claimed that it was the "number of the beast." sumo.gif

We are celebrating Sterling's 6,666th post achivement because of it's relation to 666. Let us have our creepy fun. tongue.gif

...and it IS a creepy-cool relation/achievement. Sterling must think so. Seems like he may have retired his persona by the looks of his "RIP" sig & lack of recent posting. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

If "Sterlingcomics" is dead..... Long Live Sterling! thumbsup2.gif

You seem really worked up over this and you can celebrate whatever you want, I was just pointing something out to Andy.

  6. Not only you. I saw Maiden the first time in 1985 and then again a couple years ago. Dio and Motorhead opened for them.

Hands down, the LOUDEST concert I've ever been to.

That is a pretty sweet concert. I am not much of a Dio fan, but he must have been pretty popular right about then. I think a solo Ace Frehley opened for them when I saw Maiden. crazy.gif

I know Motorhead was supposed to do a US tour earlier in the year but Lemmy broke his foot or something and it was cancelled.

  7. Uh, actually it would just be wrong. "666" that is the number of the beast, not "6,666." That doesn't make it extra evil or something - it just makes it 6,666.

Yeah, yeah. We now all about "666." smirk.gif

But if you don't think 6,666 posts is something of a cool achievement on these boards, especially for a horror fan.... well makepoint.gif

I'm coming back I will return

And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn

I have the fire, I have the force

I have the power to make my evil take its course sumo.gif

I missed Maiden at Ozzfest this year, but if they play a solo show I will be there.

I saw them on the Seventh Son tour when I was in high school and Ozzfest seems to be skipping Tampa this year. I would love to see Maiden or Motorhead this year but it doesn't look like I will get the chance with either.

Last year's lineup for Ozzfest made me so nostalgic, I actually went. It was cool to say I saw the Sabs and I never had seen Priest before so that was cool too. The last time I had seen Slayer live was on the Clash of the Titans tour with Megadeth, Anthrax and Alice in Chains. They recorded the Decade of Aggression live cd at that show.

    Man, am I getting old.

  9. Maybe he will change his name and leave this ID on 6,666 posts. That would be pretty cool... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Uh, actually it would just be wrong. "666" that is the number of the beast, not "6,666." That doesn't make it extra evil or something - it just makes it 6,666.

You guys are some real sorryazz Maiden fans....

  10. Also as I mentioned before, (I will have to check the article again) but I believe that Forrest J. Ackerman's

house was robbed a couple of years ago and a large stack of his personal copies of House of Horrors # 1 were stolen.

I believe he even offered a reward for any info.

So you know it must have been a collector/dealer right? Who else does a burglary over mags? What douchebags some people are.

  11. Hey Weird,

Sorry I never got back to you on the B&B book you were looking for. I dug mine out last night, and it's 9.0ish... best copy I've been able to find. Never seen a real beauty of it, which is strange for a mainstream title from the mid-70s. Even though it's not super high grade, I'm going to hang onto it.

I'll be a the Toronto convention at the end of August (if everything lines up). It's a very good back issue show, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for you on that book. With the passing of Jim Aparo, it will certainly become a tougher issue to find.

    Shep

Thanks for the info. I wasn't looking to get your book, just have been wondering about that issue. I have seen most of the other DC war character crossovers in B&B in decent grade,. just never that one in NM. Not at shows or on the 'net. Oh well, I am sure I will run into one someday. It is an awesome cover.

  12. Need an upgrade frown.gif

I put in a low bid and won this for $31 in the June 19 Heritage auction. I thought it would go for more as it is a very nice Kaluta cover. Most of those later Kaluta covers are great stuff.

Btw, that's the same Heritage where I won a Vampire Tales Annual CGC 9.4 in for $48. I did well in that auuction.

Oh, and is the monster's head hollow? confused-smiley-013.gif

  13. There's been some talk about which books ar hardest to find from this era (in high grade). Here are my votes:

OAAW #256 - Awesome book, and near-impossible in NM. Finally got one four years ago, and never letting go.

OAAW #286 - Not a great issue, but strangely a tough one. Ruben Yandoc art on the Rock story, with a heavy Kubert assist. Decent Estrada Gallery of War tale.

SSWS #154 - Easily the toughest book from this title. Very rare above 9.0, but what an incredible Kubert cover.

WWT #10 - Super Toth art on a rare Sheldon Mayer story. Killer hard in grade.

WWT #12 - Kaluta cover makes it a true must have for horror collectors too.

WWT #60-#80 - Just a painful, difficult run to find in grade. Some real gems in there, though.

GI Combat #141 - Just a horror to find in grade. Perhaps Russ Heath's finest moment on Haunted Tank. If you've got a true NM copy, please contact me.

GI Combat #201-213. Early dollar-size books. Tough, and just beautiful books. #207 with the Heath art inside is probably the worst to find.

    Welcome to the boards!

It is kind of funny seeing what issues give collectors a hard time compared with others, especially on non big-ticket/widely followed books. I have been focusing mainly on SSWS/US, Weird War and G.I. Combat, throwing in an occasional OAAW/Rock or misc. DC war book every now and then.

That being said, I only have 10 OAAW issues and, by chance, I have a NM 286 I got off ebay earlier this year from bobcat.

Of WWT 60-80, I have all but two in VF or above with more than half being NM- or better - with a lot of help from Blazing Bob and Doug Sulipa if I remember correctly.

And sure enough, I am missing about half of those Dollar GI Combats you mention, the #207 included.

Do you collect the Brave & the Bolds with war crossovers? I have been looking for a B&B 124 in strict NM for like a year to no avail. Killing me.

Also, I'd love to see some of your OA. There is a new OA section to the boards if you ever feel like posting any. Stick around and throw up some scans of your favorite books!

  14. Yeah, Kubert ends up recycling themes as well. I think US 205 is more of a little tribute swipe to the early days of US in SSWS.

I recently upgraded my 152 as I didn't like the spotting on that copy. I cleaned Metropolis out of the rest of the Oakland copies of the title they had left while I was at it.

Here's the only new one that wouldn't be a re-post.

Star Spangled War Stories 165 Oakland:

    So far, I have the Oakland copies of SSWS 152, 156, 160, 162, 163, 165, and 166.

  15. I see at least three things wrong with this book that disqualifies it from 9.4--can you find them all?

    Yes.

I am driving down my pre-screen books tomorrow morning. Let's hope their grading doesn't tighten up in the next few months. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

I'm sure they will tighten up right as they get to your books... devil.gif

Well, I am submitting them on the cheap (economy) so they'll have plenty of time to loosen up again, right? confused-smiley-013.gif
