  1. You know I like 'em! thumbsup2.gifhail.gif

Beautifully framed too with all the production notes, crops, and registration marks! 893applaud-thumb.gif

Oh yeah, the first thing the framer wanted to do was crop out all the production stuff. I was like, "No way!"

I still have to decide on whether to frame the Ghosts 42 or not. I get more emails/compliments about that one than the HOS and WMT combined. confused-smiley-013.gif

  2. Wow Weird, those are very, very nice. The HOS 110 has always been one of my favorites. My dad had that issue when i was a little boy (he bought it new) and it always gave me the creeps while still being drawn to it. I have the copy now, worn though it is, but i can't imagine having the original art. I am very impressed. How long has it been in your possesssion?

Thanks, I was able to get it earlier this year from another collector. It took a couple of months for my framer to fit me in since I wanted the whole archival treatment and she was busy.

I have one or two more LD covers I would like to purchase, but with OA you never know when/if they are going to be available. A Kaluta or Wrightson cover would be awesome, but they are out of my league price-wise.

I just saw Kaluta's HOM 201 cover has gone back up for grabs on comicart-l. Asking price is somewhere north of 5 Gs...

  3. Someone is going to get a sweet book.

And pay a terrible exchange rate as well...

What if the winner is a Brit? 893scratchchin-thumb.gifpoke2.gif

Then all is well in the world and another sweet comic remains outside the US...

We need someone who can rectify that situation.... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

  4. I've recently tried MileHigh and LoneStar and have found their bronze grading much tighter than in recent years... 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

    Surely you're kidding.

The Bronze "NM" books I bought from Milehigh ranged from 6.0 to 8.0.

And the 8.0 was pretty generous on my part.

I've never seen anything on Lonestar worth buying. I know I met the owner at WW Dallas last year, and he was a royal .

    foreheadslap.gif

I bought some "NM" bronze war and horror books from Lone Star this year and all were overgraded. Most were FN as I recall. I'll never order from them again, that was a test order of 10 or so books.

Mile High is better with the caveat that they too overgrade, it's just not been as bad IMO. If I order a "NM" from them on sale expecting a VF book, I am usually not disappointed - and sometimes pretty happy with what I get for my dollar. I still do not order from them much, but when you are eyeing that issue or two you need to finish up a run, its hard not to take that chance once in a while.

  5. I guess we'd have to specify DCs & Marvels since Charlton would probably have 45 of the 1st 50. frown.gif

    Charlton wasn't that bad... tongue.gif

But I'll have to admit this is probably the worst cover I've ever seen on a horror title from any publisher... 893whatthe.gif

    Jim

That cover is truly a horror. The guy's left leg is just plain awful. I like the Man-at-Arms-ish sidekick. insane.gif

Cool cover! Didn't someone post the OA to this awhile ago?

I got it along with the covers to Weird Mystery 8 and HOS 110 in a deal earlier this year. The latter two are at the framer getting the archival treatment. Once I have them up in my home office, I'll post a pic.

The Ghosts 42 is just in my portfolio until I find some space for it. frown.gif

  7.

I put in a snipe and won that 228 for less than I BINed a slabbed 8.0 copy for (and not the "good" kind of slab - but still looks undergraded to me). Buy Matt's 8.5 in the Marketplace! It's probably as good as a dodo 9.0. Just don't mind the "color rubbing." confused-smiley-013.gif

If you wait until I can compare my two copies, I'll hook you up with the lesser one. But that may be a while until I can get to them.

Cool. Let me know. I can't stand color rubbing, so Matt's copy is out. How did that HOS 106 turn out?

Overgraded. I think there was a small tear he missed or something if memory serves. I put it into my inventory as a "FN" without any additional notes, and that's all I can check right now so I'm not sure. It was under $20, so meh.

  8. Yeah, I love the Weird War covers from 1-12. Strange that the weakest one of the bunch, IMO, is 8 by Neal Adams. confused-smiley-013.gif I was thrilled to get copies of those two in 7.5 for dirt, dirt cheap. Sometimes it pays to take chances on eBay.

I am in total agreement with you on the Adams cover for 8. A big yawn-inducer in content and execution from such an awesome artist.

Did you outbid me on that HOM 228? 893scratchchin-thumb.gifChristo_pull_hair.gif

  10. Hello! My show opens June 4th, I am under immense strain to get everything done in time. On top of that , everyhting else in my life has been going haywire, so I have been laying low. The end of the misery is in sight! ONE MORE MONTH! I did get some nice homs in the 240's & 260's though today..... tongue.gif

Mark is a great guy & a good friend of mine. We connected through Halloween collecting & I dare say I turned him on to horror comics. He always appreciated comics & has the EC Hardbounds, but when I started showing him bronze horror comics, he was hooked!

    thanks for remembering me! cloud9.gif

Awesome! Very exciting/exhausting time for you no doubt. When all the dust settles please PM or email me as I would love to buy one of your pieces. Cool art from an even cooler person is thumbsup2.gif

  11. I still don't know what they hell they were thinking about the outer cover being 8.0...

Holy [#@$%!!!]! 30 people have seen this listing and you just put it up?

BTW, you may want to ping "marlede", who bid on bobcat's books this week. If I've done my homework correctly, Mark (marlede) has written a halloween book and is quite a horror nut. He may give you $150 just by the nature of his bids...

The book kinda reminds me of shiver's work....

Where is Matthew? Anybody know how his show went? confused.gif

  12. I know, it's rare, but I agree with Jim on this one. The only reason I can see that someone would be upset that an auction in progress is brought up here, is if that person was hoping to keep it a secret so that they may get a better price on it.

But since we are all pals here, I think offering a heads up to each other when a rare item comes up is a friendly gesture. I'm all for it.

I don't see a problem with pointing it out either. As was stated, this isn't even the first time this piece has been offered on ebay recently. I don't think any ebay auction of a Cardy cover by a top dealer is going to be flying under the radar of most people who would normally be interested (and who will most likely be winning the item). I imagine the "watching" list on the item is already significant after less than a day.

I also doubt "thrill" bidding will impact the sale price either. Simply put, it is going to go for whatever it is going for, that is just how original art (and comics in general) seems to go. Just my opinion, I am sure some will disagree, but it's all good.

  13. I wonder when/if there will be a spike or even modest increase in those numbers. Maybe not necessarily all high grade, I mean there is not much even in the way of "misses" in the middle/lower grades. You would think there might be more copies in any grade considering each is a $100+ book in 9.2 in the OS. And each brings a big slabbed premium for the most part.

I'm betting there are more than a few sitting in collections that aren't going anywhere soon. Even HG copies. Genre collectors tend to keep their comics once acquired and aren't likely to feel a need to slab them.

If prices continue to rise, and I'm of the belief large price increases on horror have topped off for now, you may see many more come out. But I'm guessing the rise would have to be higher than your normal price increase for genre collectors to let them go. Especially those with HG copies as the effort to get them was probably more difficult than your average superhero comic.

Give it 5-10 years though when the cycle repeats itself and horror back issues re-ignite and you'll likely to see the Census numbers rise quickly.

If a crash happens in the meantime though, all bets are off... 893whatthe.gif

    Jim

I suspect your comment about the genre collectors is right on the money. I know I am disinclined to slab any issues I have in high grade. It makes no sense for me to slab books I have no immediate plans to relinquish. Couple that fact with little to no interest on my part in any eventual CGC horror registry, slab damage, and the inability to actually hold/open the book and I just prefer to keep my copies raw for the most part.

It's just that only 6 slabbed issues of HOS 81, whatever the reason, was low enough to pique my interest on the subject. I still think it is odd in 2005 that there aren't a couple of 7.0s or something mixed in the numbers. You would think the push on horror books would have tempted someone to send in a lesser quality copy of one of these books. Can you tell I need a HOS 81 yet? crazy.gif
