  1. Looked for a strict 9.4 copy of this for the past 4 years or so. I have only seen a couple SS copies pop up and ended up buying a raw 9.0 from Sulipa.

When I saw this show up as BIN on ebay, I didn't even hesitate. Even with it being a last issue, you'd think you'd see some HG issues show up more than they do. (shrug) The only other non-SS in the census is a 9.0.

  2. I've thought about it, but that's just more money that doesn't go towards the accumulation of more books. Can anyone present a case for having a registry set?

    Andy

Some runs I am going after HG only and CGC'ed books are a good (and sometimes only) way to do that. And if I am going after them in CGC slabs, why not just take the time to set up a set? Sure it is gimmicky, but for me it's just another outlet for the OCD/anal retentive aspect of being a comic collector.

Also, I travel a lot for work and am often away from my comics and comic files. If I see something on ebay or CLINK I can always go to my Collector's Society account and take a look at a nicely organized snapshot of books I collect with front and back scans, their centering, page quality, etc., and see if I can upgrade or if am missing an issue.

I wouldn't tell anyone to collect only CGC books, but the Registry is just another way to share yours if you do have a couple (or more).

  3. I found that I did very well in that auction for some books that flew under the radar.

Here's one that cost me $107.55

And this one cost me $42.00

How about this daddy for $77.68

(thumbs u Sweet books. Start a GIC Registry Set Andy.

  4. Here's a question:

Who is the greatest BA war character?

No question... it's the Unknown Soldier. (I don't take Our Army at War #168 as his first appearance - I consider him a bronze age creation.)

    Shep

I notice on the newer CGC SSWS 151 labels it no longer says "First Unknown Soldier in title" (as it does on my copy), but now says "1st appearance of the Unknown Soldier." hm

  5. Maybe he bought it and now is selling them now?

No, the original listing didn't saw that it was from the Marlow collection.

Maybe you should ask Doug, as I have a feeling those books were actually some DC stragglers that got sold to Doug when Showcase New England dumped the later BA books to Doug back in the day. SNE said that most of the DCs didn't have the COA saying it was from the Winnipeg collection so it's likely it got the designation because Doug submitted them personally.

Sounds like he is just adding to whatever he is already selling on Heritage. Kind of lame to attach the "from the collection of" tag to something being flipped in less than a month. Hopefully, it goes for cheaper than what he paid. hm

btw PM on the way. :sumo:

  6. Anyone know what the deal with the Winnipeg Unknown Soldiers that were recently listed on Pedigreecomics.com is? The 9.8 #268 sold rather quickly for $300 (and is listed on GPA as a September sale) and now the book is in the current Heritage Signature auction as something "from the Keith Marlow Collection." - Auction

I now notice that all the Winnipeg Unknown Soldiers are gone from PedigreeComics.com as well. I guess my questions are - a.) is the 268 from some collection that is constantly/currently being added to and then sold on Heritage or b.) was it just moved to a different venue by that collection owner? If it was just a move, then why is it listed as a sale on GPA? I do not remember if the PedigreeComics description had the Marlow annotation in the description or not.

Maybe there is a simple answer, I seem to remember this Marlow person posting on the boards before - perhaps he can shed some light on the subject.

  7. Finished (I think I got them all) my bronze Brave and the Bold/DC War set.

Nice set of books! (thumbs u

Bonds, you have good taste. That is my favorite cover of the ones I posted (going up against Kubert, Adams, and Cardy no less) and the one that started me collecting all the war themed bronze BATBs. It's probably the toughest to find in HG of all the bronze issues in that mini-set. The 124 CGC 9.8 is a Ewert book and I bought the CGC 8.0 in 2005 only to find that it had production tears all along the back cover. Other than that, there is only one more 9.6 and a single 9.4.

  8. Finished (I think I got them all) my bronze Brave and the Bold/DC War set. Included a couple of the earlier silver Rock appearances for the hell of it. They're all pretty decent examples of the books with some Rosa books in there as well. I doubt I will upgrade any of them.

  9. Also, what kind of scanner do you have? I am thinking of getting an HP 7410 - not a big fan of HP, but their printers are okay and I do need a fax every once in a while (stupid people who won't give up and just use PDFs and email).

I'd like to re-scan all of my slabs on a legal size scanner this year and re-organize my registry sets.

  10. Very nice copy Sterling. I was watching that one as I still need a decent copy. You got a phenomenal deal compared to the Rosa copy that sold a while back.

On a side note, I thought this was a multi-pack book (I know there is at least one or two SSWS that are)? Which I would think would make it more available in HG. 9.4 is still top census. Maybe I am mistaken on that.

  11. And I am not much into the newer Hollywood Private Ryan-type movies, but a couple of foreign ones stand out for me in modern times - Der Untergang (The Downfall) and Idi i smotri (Come and See). I highly recommend each if you like WW2 movies that are not necessarily all about action and big battle scenes

Thanks for 2 more recommendations. I will search these out!

    We can't forget:

    Patton

    Tora, Tora, Tora

    Apaclypes Now

    etc......

Here are some newer one that are really good that did not get much press. These are listed in no particular order!

Enemy at the gates ( WW2. Russian sniper holds off germans at Stalingrad).

When Trumpets Fade. ( WW2. This is a must see for action and Story line)

Saints and Soldiers (WW2. Not a lot of action but good story)

Over There (Iraq. This is a 13 part TV mini series. Awesome. Must see)

Band of Brothers (WW2. Everyone knows this one. A must see!!)

I could go on and on but these are the best. I'm also looking for a movie that I never got on DVD and now Its out of print. It was called The Lost Patrol (or platoon). It was a WWI movie that was fantastic but I can't find it. Looking for 3yrs now. It was played on the History Channel or a similer channel.

    Thanks for the suggestions Guys

I like Apocalypse Now a lot, but if we switch to Vietnam movies, I think the first half of Full Metal Jacket is possibly the best thing ever put on film (it has battles over that title in my head with Goodfellas all the time). The first time I saw that as a teen, I was in absolute awe of D'Onofrio's (who pretty much phones in his stuff these days) and R. Lee Ermey's performances. The second half trails off a bit for me, but man the whole basic training aspect is just genius.

Also, an old afternoon or weekend WW2 movie I forgot to mention is "A Walk in the Sun." I still see that on our local PBS station occasionally on weekends. Good stuff.

And Band of Brothers is a big thumbs up from me. I still haven't watched it again since seeing it during the initial HBO run. But so good.

A Persian Gulf movie I liked was Jarhead. Although, I don't see what was so great about Three Kings (as some of its fans do). As for all out battle action, the Ranger/Delta Force/Somalia Black Hawk Down is fantastic as well. I need to pick it up on Blu Ray - I hear the HD transfer is superb.

  12. I saw some Rat Patrol episodes on TV as a kid but never saw Combat. Every time I go to Borders I salivate over the Combat dvd's. I'd love to buy them.

One of the things I miss about TV in the 70's and early 80's is the now defunct independent stations. Back then, those stations would show movies on weekends and that's how I saw a lot of world war 2 movies. I saw all these as a kid and they are among my all time favorite movies.

    The Longest Day

    The Dirty Dozen

    Kelly's Heroes

    Hell is for Heroes

    Von Ryan's Express

    Guns of Navarone

    The Big Red One

Midway (not a great movie but actually quite accurate)

    The Devil's Brigade

    Bridge at Remagen

    Pork Chop Hill

    Where Eagles Dare

Battle of the Bulge (horribly inaccurate but fun!)

Force Ten from Navarone (bad movie, guilty pleasure)

Good list, haven't seen all of those, but two of my favorite WW2 movies aren't on there - The Great Escape and Stalag 17. Stalag 17 is one of my faves no matter the genre. It would always pop up on afternoon or weekend television.

And I am not much into the newer Hollywood Private Ryan-type movies, but a couple of foreign ones stand out for me in modern times - Der Untergang (The Downfall) and Idi i smotri (Come and See). I highly recommend each if you like WW2 movies that are not necessarily all about action and big battle scenes.

  13. Now, where is the fridge where you keep the beer and chips? You also need a sofa to crash on... cloud9.gif

You probably can't see it too well, but there is a metal cylinder looking thing that is my beer fridge. And I wish I would have put a wet bar in, but I ran out of time and just went with a basic bar area.

There is a sofa in the one corner, it's why I put the plasma on a cantilever arm. I can either point the plasm towards the couch, have it pointed out to the middle of the room for some wii action or put it flush against the wall if we're playing pool. I cannot reommend those omnimount cantilever arms enough. They are handy.

  14. Cool...let's see more of the Gator stuff! 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

I've got to re-stick some of the margins on the Fathead stickers (they don't do well on the game room walls for some reason). But I put the game on the plasma for you. thumbsup2.gif

I'm not a millionaire and there's a lot more stuff I would like to have done with a game room, but I think it turned out great. I've already had some great parties in it and love showing it off. And I enjoy having some great BA horror on the wall for everyone to see. Thanks everyone for the props.
