  1. BTW, I know I've showed these as I got them over the years (at least I think I did), but I put a pool/game room in the house earlier this year and finally took some pics of my favorite LD/BA horror covers I have hanging on one of the walls.

I usually have to explain to my frineds it is the actual art used in the process and they're like 30 years old. I wouldn't say any of them are exactly impressed, but I think they look great where they are. crazy.gif

  2. I was just watching this channel for the first time. They CENSOR the movies. foreheadslap.gif893naughty-thumb.gif What a waste. Is there any point in watching censored horror movies (it's past 10 PM Eastern - so kids can't be an excuse). Lame.

The shows are not edgy at all...just classic stuff. Not sure why they would censor it...that's why we have the v chip. My tivo died this week so I lost about 12 episodes of Night Gallery...luckily they are already re-running previously viewed episodes so I'll catch them the 2nd time around.

Yeah, Night Gallery (I remember being freaked out by the paintings alone, nevermind the episode when I was young watching reruns), Nightmare on Elm Street: The Series and other TV fare should be alright, but I don't get the censoring of horror movies on an all horror channel. screwy.gif

I gave up on my DirecTV HD Tivo tonight as well - doesn't get the locals over satellite and now I find out it isn't getting some of the other HD programming my other receivers get. Had to order another HD DVR and the Tivo functionality blows away the newer boxes. frown.gif

  3. A little OT, but I found a new station on my satellite called "Chiller"...they run the old classics as well as the newer stuff...everything horror and suspense. Thought I'd pass it along.

I'm watching "Night Gallery", which is hosted by Rod Serling. I've heard about the show, but I have never seen an episode. This episode "Make Me Laugh" was directed by Steven Spielburg. 893whatthe.gif

  4. Hey Guys, I thought it was interesting that in the price guide section in the back of Pedrins Big Five book he did not note that #168 was the first appearance of The Unknown Soldier and there was not a price difference. In the story listing section though, under #168 it states. 1 "I KNEW THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER1" (PT 1) ROCK/EASY - SEE SSWS #157

Unfornuatly, I can't comment on this debate since I have not read #168 but I thought this was interesting. I wonder what they thought about #168 when putting the book together just 11 years ago.

    Larry

That is interesting. I need to get a Pedrin guide one day - I just don't want to pay Motor City or DTA prices for one....

  5. Whoa! 893whatthe.gif When you dig, you dig deep... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Naw, I am just busting Shep's balls. I remembered that 168 had sold within the past two years and when I looked back at my original auction link, I saw Shep's comment right below it. I thought it was semi-humorous. flowerred.gif

I would like to see Kubert's exact comments on the connection though. Like I said, 168 is the first appearance due to the retcon in 157, but I have a very hard time believing it is anything more than a retcon.

I'm not fighting anyone on 168 though. It is what it is in the US mythos at this point - the first appearance. I just don't think anyone is going to convince me that labeling it as a retcon is wrong though.

  6. Our Army at War #168 is the first appearance of Unknown Soldier. No ifs, ands or buts.

Kubert has said that when they were looking for a character concept to replace Enemy Ace in Star Spangled War Stories, he pulled the Unknown Soldier straight out of the Sgt. Rock story. He just gave the character a 'look'. But it's the same character.

That's as good as gospel for me.

The only mystery is why didn't fans like Enemy Ace enought to let it continue in its own book.

  7. Weird:

See SSWS #157 and you will see the reference it makes to OAAW 168- the pivatol connection and thus the reason why OAAW 168 is the first appearance of the Unknown Soldier.

There is no doubt that OAAW 168 is the 1st app. of the Unknown Soldier. It took some time for the people at Overstreet to realize this.

    Your opinion is interesting nevertheless.

    bronzejohnny

Just re-read OAAW 168 and SSWS 154 and 157. They sure did retcon it. Basically five years after the OAAW story they incorporated it into 157. Pretty much reprinting the OAAW story page for page (easy issue to put out!). They even include the shot of them carrying away the soldier's corpse. foreheadslap.gif

I see your point and even go as far as to say you are right. But really for my money 151 is still the book to have over 168. I think they just took the easy route for an issue. But I don't deny that it is what it is at this point.

edited - got the years wrong

  8. If you look around, there are many sellers of this book (OAAW 168) who don't really know its significance.

I've got to believe that many people still think that SSWS 151 is the 1st App, of the Unknown Soldier. It's interesting since this character has been around for more than 40 years and is one of the most significant war characters ever to come out of comics.

    bronzejohnny

If you read OAAW #168, I'll think you'll see that the soldier in the story (which is much different than SSWS #154 - the origin issue of the Unknown Soldier) is not the soldier who becomes the Unknown Soldier in the SSWS run. OAAW #168 was 4 years before SSWS #151 and the soldier is killed in the story. I think this story was meant as a standalone.

Maybe later it was retconned (haven't read every meeting between Rock and US) by an editor or something, but I do not think the person in OAAW #168 is the US of the DC universe nor is he even a protoype of him. I would say SSWS #151 is definitely the first appearance of DC's Unknown Soldier.

  9. BTW I'm looking for a hi-grade copy myself....

    You forgot the *hint*hint* poke2.gif

BTW I just got done looking back at the first 7 or so pages (I think I have my settings at max posts per page) of this thread and they hold up very well. Most of the image links are still working. thumbsup2.gif

Had to cheer myself up after going to MSG tonight and watching the Bolts get demolished by the stupid Rags. frustrated.gif

  10. What's the deal with this one issue wonder that arrived in 1978?

    BA5GH001.jpg

Was this book part of the DC implosion...I know that G.I War was a reprint series...All Out War lasted 4 issues (that Viking character was a hoot). any other short lived DC war series? Was the early 80s the "gasp" of the war genre? (If I recall, western was going through the same pains).

Correct, the cover to #2 is in the Cancelled Comic Cavalcade 2 - which also includes the cover to Battle Classics #3 another short lived war title.

  11. I grew up with all the DC war, western, and horror books, mainly because that's what my dad liked. The Unknown Soldier was always one of my favorites, and stood above Sgt. Rock, The Haunted Tank, and The Losers in my book. Then I started reading some of the Enemy Aces, which I had skipped previously, and found another character to rival the Soldier in terms of coolness....and all this leads me to the greatest book of the DC War genre....Star Spangled War Stories....three distinct and fantastic runs in that comic...the dinosaur era and its awesome covers, the Enemy Ace run, and the beginning of the Unknown Soldier. Nothing tops it....all IMO, naturally. thumbsup2.gif

Totally with you on this. The US is at the top of my favorite DC character list along with Jonah Hex and Batman. I like GIC/HT a lot and Sgt. Rock is cool and all, but the SSWS/US is tops on my list for DC War.

  12. Just picked up my new Showcase Unknown Soldier today. Excited, I am....all those great stories bound in one cheap black and white telephone book.

    YUMMY!

    Andy hi.gif

thumbsup2.gif Ordered mine and it is on the way. BTW, I was reading a couple issues of SSWS last night and noticed in #202 that Keno Don Rosa makes an appearance as an Italian doctor in the story. He's always tossing back the vino, I am guessing that was the inside joke.

Also, in case anyone is interested in a mini-report, I made Friday at The National while on some business in NYC and couldn't help but notice the dearth of HG Bronze DC war. I mean I bought a couple nothing issues here and there as mid-grade fillers, but I did not see any slabbed SSWS or even raw HG issues that I need for my Unknown Soldier registry set or to complete my Weird War Tales raw run. One dealer told me he was holding on to most of his DC war for the time being or something like that.

Metro had a CGC 9.0 WWT #1. They had it at way over GPA (first time I got to use GPA mobile on my Q at a con). I did manage to buy a set of Rosa Four Star Battle Tales (which was missing the #5 for some reason - anyone have it?), an Eerie 79 (love that cover) and ran into some Forumite dealers/sellers, so all was not lost.

I had never been to the National before and fail to see what makes it different than the other Big Apple Cons (I have been to three or four of the "regular" ones). confused-smiley-013.gif

  13. very cool! on average, how much does an original GPK painting cost? And how big are they?

Since I have been watching over the past six months or so, I have seen them anywhere in the range of $400 to $1700 for the original 80s issue paintings. They (Topps) sell some 2000s series art and roughs as well. The two big artists from the orginals that I know of are John Pound and James Warhola (Andy's nephew). I think there are some other artists on those original issues though.

Topps Vault actually keeps track of some of the sales from ebay on their own site: Topps Vault. There, they have some recorded sales of $3k, $4k, and one of almost $6k. I imagine if something like the iconic Adam Bomb/Blasted Billy card (Series 1) ever came up (don't know if it already has or if it ever will), it would fetch in the 5 digits easily. That is just a guess, I am not in the GPK collecting community or anything.

My piece is about 5"x7". I would think they all pretty much follow that format, but I am not sure.

  14. Got these a few weeks back and finally got a chance to scan them. All the Blue Ribbons are Manitobas.

  15. Speaking of which, I visited a small local con today. There were about a dozen or so exhibitors and practically NO bronze age horror to be had (that is unless Sterling got there before me, and bought it all!!). Believe it or not, this is the only HG bronze horror book that I found. frustrated.gif893applaud-thumb.gif

Sweet book, looks like a nice find. Bobcat has a nice one listed this week along with some other purdy BA horror books. popcorn.gif

  16. And some others...

This first one is a CD booklet that came out in the 90's. It features a wolverine story that cannot be found anywhere else, but with the CD (I think).
