Just spit-balling but what about people who paid at the height of the market, who's books are now worth less? My inclination of the benefit of the doubt with CGC, is if you bought at the height under the understanding that the CGC label was legit, you'd still get compensated.... hm

I'm not sure that it is the current FMV or like insurance at all, if it is only worth $3000, but you bought it for 5k, I would want the 5k if cgc has any true guarantee

Right.  When people starting saying Fair Market Value the instance of buying at 2021 prices was brought up.  I would assume if you bought at 1650 and current GPA or GoCollect is 3000 they would give you the 3000.   I would hope the ask for the receipt is in case the movement is the opposite direction.  Though to be honest if they just said they would pay out GPA 90 day average or GoCollect fair market value people who wanted another copy could conceivably go out and buy one in the current market whether the market has gone up or down.  The books manipulated in this way aren’t exactly scarce are they?  (Other than MJ inserts I guess?  No idea, they aren’t in my focus, though to be honest none of the books manipulated in this way are in my focus as far as I know.)

  2. Thank god the thread is finally slowing down.  Gives those of us who came in when the thread was hundreds of pages long a chance to finally catch up.  The concerns I have, other than the myriad of concerns already mentioned are (and if I missed where they were mentioned forgive me.  I’ve tried to read everything, but am sure I missed some posts)

    1)  If someone had a way of “manufacturing” green labels and lower grades into blue labels and higher grades wouldn’t that mean that the prices of green labels and lower grades would be artificially inflated and blue labels and higher grades were artificially depressed?  Do we know how many books (other than the vague 350) are possibly involved?  What percentage of the market of specific titles and or issues do they  represent?  Do we need GPAnalysis and GoCollect to somehow note on books that have had a heavy presence that there may be shenanigans in the prices of that issue?  Or do we have to just wait until this blows over to get a feel for the natural level of some of these books.

    2)  Again how long this has been going on might be in the threads somewhere, but as someone who has bought only one book in the last couple years it would be nice to know when people in the know think this all started.

    3)  Much the same it would sure be nice to know all names/usernames used in this.  At least the people most central to it.  I know everyone is scared of lawsuits.  But I imagine if the perpetrator has a lawyer his concern is elsewhere right now.  I’ve seen one Instagram? EBay? username and one comic shop linked to this but no confirmation.  This only puts those of us NOT in the know at risk.  Especially if there is a board name/board names associated to this.  That would put some of us who use this forum some peace of mind.

    4)  Finally, even if there is no information that can be shared at this point from CGC it would be nice to have some kind of timeline to when we might get more information.  As I stated previously I haven’t added to my collection much in years, but prices are finally getting down to where I could think of picking up something again.  Needless to say I’m reluctant to until I know more.

Like most, I’d like to add my kudos to the board and YouTube detectives who have uncovered all this.

With a $100 million budget, it's 66% cheaper than Rebel Moon, and it lacks the franchise expectations and investment, including planned multimedia tie-ins of books / comic books / podcast / animated show, etc.

I thought the $166 budget was for part one AND part two.  And I imagine Snyder is doing the extra edits under the same budget?

Netflix filed that concern appropriately as it prepares to release the Director's Cut and sequel. Go figure!

It prepares to release them because it already paid for them?  The real test will be if they greenlight the sequels.

I’ve tried to watch it twice and have not been able to get past the first 15 minutes.  It is, of course, visually stunning.  But seems to be empty calories so far.  Snyder has always seemed to be a wonderful person, an exceptional cinematographer, and a mediocre writer.  I’ll try it again at some point, but I have low expectations of making it through it.

  4. I’ll echo what Dave says.  Especially since you owned a direct market store.  If you want it for nostalgia and not investment (which is the only way I collect) and you were involved in the direct market for years, it seems a no-brainer.  Or are you asking which will hold value/appreciate faster in which case I can’t help you.  But I’m sure @valiantman can.

I thought the Byrne Fantastic Four run was supposed to be great? I bought it years ago l to read but never got around to it. Why would he not appreciate fans of the early work?

    I imagine it’s two things:

1st it show he peaked early.  No one wants to think their best days are behind them.

2nd his early work he was the penciller.  His later work he tried his hand at writing/pencilling/inking.

  6. I’m not sure if we are only talking modern comic artists or just non GA comic artists.

On the off chance we are talking any post GA artist I’ll mention one late SA artist and one late BA artist.

For late SA I don’t think there are any better than Jim Steranko.  He has more covers that are designated as classics by Overstreet and CGC than anyone not named Schomburg, Fine, Kirby, or Cole,

For late BA I’d put in Bill Sienkiewicz.  Watching him go from blah standard superhero to his dynamic work on Moon Knight and New Mutants was astounding.

The only thing that hurts these artists is that they both had relatively few covers compared to their contemporaries.

The closer pictures do look more like stains and not CT or tear seal. If that's the case, the good news is, it's not restored.

The bad news is, those stains will impact the grade.  It could end up a very pretty 3.5

    I have a similar Hulk 2

Yeah.  Looks more like small stains.  And you can see the same spots on the cover in a pattern that would suggest stain rather than CT.  I’m at 4.5/5.0 with the general wear, the stains, and the creased lower front cover.  Let us know what you get when it gets back.

But you can't reasonably charge $50 an hour....or $10k for 12k comic books.

If I had 12,000 books & wanted someone else to accurately grade/inventory them, I would gladly pay $1/book for that service

Yeah, my main take away from this thread is my employer is paying me way too much.

If I were a business, I could claim a $1,000 depreciation on it if I at one time valued it at $3,000, right?

As long as you paid the taxes on its increase from 50¢ to $3000.  My point is simply that if you consider comic collecting a hobby (something that money goes into) then you aren’t down anything.  If you consider comic collecting an investment you definitely are down from what your comics were worth.  My 401k is down about 18%.  But definitely above where I got in.  Does that mean my investments haven’t lost value?  Of course not.

If I purchased a book in 1980 for $0.50 and sold it today for $2,000 but 6 months ago copies in the same grade were selling for $3,000, did I just lose $1,000?

That depends.  If someone asked you your net worth including collectibles would you value the comic at 50¢ or $2000?

Let me see. For years folks on here ragged on DC movies repeatedly. Attacked me personally for even appreciating and speaking up with enjoying DC films.

I guess that was okay all those years, but now that Marvel Studios is stumbling with certain productions then we make it a DC fanbase problem? Yeah, you must be right.

I, for one, agreed with your take and tried not to spend too much time harping on movies I didn’t like after that.  I must say, you are probably the one I’m most disappointed in seeing spending so much time and energy on films and studios you don’t like.  That saying I can understand you felt aggrieved and need to take it out and on others.

    So much makes sense now.FB_IMG_1663773301861.thumb.jpg.35de8f47b34531db3d84d9bdc58e0257.jpg

I'm so-so on Love and Thunder, but now we're rewriting Ragnarok as a bad film as well?

Just so I'm clear, if we dislike something DC does we're to respectfully post our review and then disappear, but we can still rag on anything Marvel makes as much as we want, right?
