  1. I think it is tough to find also. Yours looks really nice. Here is mine. I picked this up many, many years ago, and rarely see one in high grade out in the wild, or in auctions for that matter.

Totally agreed. PITA to find in high grade. I think I only have a 9.4, which is a 9.0 given today's rage to press. :(

  2. I've never read any of Dr Spektor...I'm guessing it's a lot like Dr. Graves? I've definitely grabbed many of the Charlon and Gold Key Ghost titles.

I seem to remember that Dr. Graves was mostly a host character, right?

Dr. Spektor is the main character in this book, sort of like a proto Fox Mulder or Carl Kolchak.

Most of the stories are pretty good. Jesse Santos is a Filipino artist who draws in a style somewhat similar to the other BA artists from the Philippines. And the Gold Key painted covers are usually pretty cool.

Graves actually participated in the stories, not a host. Although later I believe he did become just that.

  3. Retiring something without replacing it is kinda stupid....unless they're pushing you to some kind of service that will support that functionality. It sounds like they're officially saying goodbye to the small timers that made em what they are.

  4. I always loved The Unexpected, as a kid it had one of those logos that grabbed your eye on the comic rack. I've been trying to keep my eye open for a nice copy of 122 for years (my favorite cover) but never seem to have any luck.

I've only seen one maybe two for sale in 13+ years. This is my only copy.

BTW, I agree with you on the late silver/early bronze titles had the "pop" both in terms of the new logo design/size and darker color palette. Having awesome cover artists during this time didn't hurt either.

Amazing comic (is there a drool emoticon?). I knew if anyone was going to have a knockout copy it would be you (Sterlingcomics, right?).

Way to keep the BA horror flag flying! These books are definitely underappreciated!

We all carry the burden of the bronze.... :)

    And yes, namechange, same guy.

  5. [i have see the video evidence....he does not even know what he owns....this is not rubbish this is REALITY..12 million comic books give or take a couple of hundred thousand is part of a plan...chuck wants to reshape the pricing structure of comic books by controlling supply and having every comic book in every grade....why do think he wants that...its called control....

If he wants to make sure that he has single digit customers, I guess that's a strategy. I have no problems bowing out when I can't afford it. My hobby didn't come with lubricant. At least I get a GF experience with the current vendors I buy from.

  7. According to todays newsletter, chuck has ended all codeword sales from here on out...meaning you do not have to -60%, he reduced according to him all prices across the board depending on how much he had in stock, and if it is a lower grade comic book...he did this to attract new buyers..who were probably weirded out by the high prices..make that mile high prices...well check out the new lower mile high prices ...in the meantime there is a photo of chuck with at least 500 comic book boxes around 300,000 comics that he needs to sort.

The new mile high is here...what do think

I find this interesting and I have to wonder if Chuck may be reading this thread.

I decided to go back and check the prices on the books I originally looked at when I began this thread.

    They were as follows....

Action #244 in Fair for $123 (minus 60%) and the total cost is $49.20

Tonight that book is now listed at $30.00

Action #244 in Good for $245 (minus 60%) for $98.00

    Now - $60

Action #246 in Fair for $123 (minus 60%) for $49.20

    Now - $30

Action #246 in Good for $245 (minus 60%) for $98.00

    Now - $60

Action #249 in VG for $441 (minus 60%) for $176.40

    Now - $120

Action #250 in Good for $240 (minus 60%) for $96.00

    Now - $60

I will say this is a step in the right direction.

Just another 50% off and he'll be halfway there.

Well at least he is getting a clue that too much of a good thing can turn out to be a disaster. Here we have chuck going around the county buying...I think 400,000 comic books in the last 30 days..and now he is saying we need to sell them.....he is probably now at 11 million, he was at at least 10 before the move but who is gonna buy 11 or 12 million comic books..in the future ????

For pennies on a dollar, when he passes and his family sell it off.

  8. I seem to recall hearing Chuck say he pays 1/4 X for things he sells for 3X.

I am going to assume X=FMV.

Not sure why anyone would sell to him for 1/4 FMV (which I would not doubt is less than 1/4 FMV)

Then again, not sure why anyone would buy from him at 3 times FMV (which I tend to believe is often more than 3 times FMV).

    (shrug)(shrug)(shrug)(shrug)(shrug)

He actually answered the question. Where you go to buy makes all the difference.

So, clueless widow of a collector---take them for a ride.

Go to show - pay a bit more.

Go to auction house - pay even more.

  9. Chuck just scored another big collection...he is going around the usa and buying collection after collection , check out the e-mail newsletters when you get to the site and just click...

he wants more...and more...and even more....

10 million comics and when I check silver/bronsze books they are never in stock...so he must have a lot of drek.

  10. I REALLY want the new TFTC series to be awesome; there are a lot of things going against it tho. The latest I heard I that its going to be part of a block of programming, and they might go anthology format like HBO and the original comics, OR story arc a la American Horror Story. I also read that they are crowdsourcing story ideas. Ummm....hello? Bill and Al have all the story ideas you need. I like a majority of M Night's work (some are brilliant!), but I hope this isn't just a project they are tacking his name onto.

Everything I'm reading is it's a story arc that continues week after week...basically soap opera horror. Remember the 70s CLIFFHANGER series? Kinda like that.

I'm also told they will have a new crypt keeper...so given above my expectations are very low. I know fans are more or less rejecting some of that.

I'm in a prove it kind of mindset. I'd love ANYTHING horror related on TV that is ongoing though. And get rid of this PG13 that's permeating in the movie theaters. You can do more adult horror and it need not be the 80s slasher variety either.

  11. ^ No excuse for that....they need to make that right. I guess it's hard pulling stuff when there's 10 millon comics to go through.

    Must be nice....

Hate to be a drag about reality and all, but there is some risk in this hobby, which is why OG always talks about picking sellers that honor no-hassle refunds. Yes, we know the buyer that are around that would abuse the hell out of said policy....but for most honest folks....disagreements/dissatisfaction is best handled with good customer service. I guess Chuck has had his fill of it and it's just easier to just sever all ties.

  12. HOM 226 has a story "Garden of Evil" where a man sees a beautiful woman in a mirror and then joins her in the mirror realm. He convinces his wife (who he hasn't loved for some time) to take her place in the mirror so she can cross into the real world. Unfortunately, the psychiatrist breaks the mirror thinking he would come to his senses, but he's now stuck in the mirror world with the beautiful woman, who is really an ugly witch that lured him there. (She doesn't take kindly to it either).

I'm noticing a few "mirror" related stories....I just saw a movie the other day called "Mirrors" with Keifer Sutherland which has some very similar threads.

Funny, because I've been going back and re-reading most of the EC, Harvey, and Warren archives from the 50s - 60s, and it's amazing how similar these stories and themes are to that period. Also interesting is seeing the same stories slightly reworked over and over in some of the Eerie publications.

When are the DC bronze horror titles going to get the omnibus treatment? :pullhair:

I would be thrilled to have DC bronze get nice color archive treatment sometime soon. I think it will happen, but who knows when.

Marvel just announced a giant sized 2 volume Monsterbus with 50s and 60s tales, but speculation is it will be handpicked Kirby and Ditko work.

edit: looks like HOS is getting an omnibus!!! Good start and I'll be all over that.

    https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1401272533/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=richjohnston-20&linkId=ca56754bdf8c1c9e8d3e937ad5055526

I have discovered that there have been a ton of stuff released in HC/omnibus format over the last few years....and I'll simply run out of money collecting out of the DC and Marvel titles I've already started, so that's how I'm going to round it out.

WTH are they starting with HOS? Everyone knows HOM rules the roost! This does look like a "best of"....I guess we'll see.

I'd love everything DC has done in Bronze to early Modern in this format, though.

I have a ton of the 90s reprints for ECs and I'm reading those as well. I'm definitely going to be spending more time READING next year than buying....

BTW, does everyone know that Tales from the Crypt TV show is "kinda" coming back? The crypt keeper from the 90's HBO show is coming back (in a different form since it's licensed separately)....show however isn't going to be an anthology....I'm not so sure....Kassir was absolutely brilliant as the voice. Without him or the puppet....

  14. That's the trouble, I can't remember exactly. It very well could be from an Unexpected, but I seem to remember Cain at the beginning and/or at the end. I have a gut feeling it might have been in one of those 100 pager HOM issues.

Perusing....so far HOS 87 has a story called "Death has Marble Lips" where this man fantasizes about bringing this marble statue to life...ignoring his bride to be....resorting to black magic (which fails)....until Big S himself is called upon. The statue comes to life, and they kiss.....and then he turns to marble.

    Still looking.

Hope you have the title right at least. I can peruse HOM/HOS/Witching Hour on my computer, but that's about it.
