  1. Thank you for doing this and considering my book by Silver Wolf Comics Grips 1. In 1986 when this book was released I was fairly new to comic books. I was a Sophomore in a private all boy's high school (La Salle) worked as a waiter part time (Marie Calendars) and had the responsibility of carting my younger sister around in my FIAT spider. I was busy but I was also crazy about Wolverine X-Men and Batman. Didn't matter what it was if it had Wolverine at the time I would buy it. I had disposable income at the time and I bought multiple copies. I loved independents too (TMNT, Usagi Yojimbo etc) and saw this cover to Grips 1. Total Wolverine rip off: brown costume and the blades attached to the back of his hands. Opened the book at my local comic book store (Gary's Corner Book Store) and said yes. I took it home along with 20 other comics and read it. Here's where the story gets good in my opinion. I was an honor student in math English and science. For honors English, we had to write a 1 page paper daily: type written, spaced yada yada yada and it had to be in the first person for this assignment. I was so busy with life at the time that I could not come up with content. I could not put pen to paper so I decided to baffle my teacher with BS. Plagiarism was a serious offense and I did not want to get caught. SO I decided to copy word for word the narration in Grips 1. I had to lose the bad language of course but it was an easy paper to write once I started with the following open which is on page 16 "The wind blew a mourning for the deeds to come. The earth knew what I did not, Perhaps it was speaking to me, warning me. Perhaps it was comforting me, reassuring me of my mission. I am the KNIGHT of darkness. I am death's pawn in the delivering of the evil souls and I love my work..." I took lots of different parts of the comic but to me this was the perfect start for my paper. When I was finished with the paper I loved it. I wrote it off in my mind as a perfect homage to the comic I loved. I was scared to death handing it in but I knew there was no possible way Mr. Koppleman had read this book. I got an "A" of course and the teacher wrote a comment, "David you may have found your niche". I never did it again and never told my mom. I told my son recently because he starts High School tomorrow.
  2. Great book no surprises and fast shipping. Love the personalized strip. Perfect! Thanks
  3. I thought I would weigh in again. For me newsstand or direct sales doesn't matter for my permanent collection. I'm a completist in that I want all the issues to a series so I can read it. I don't need all the variants 2nd prints Whitman's and everything else in between. Newsstand vs direct does matter though when I want to sell off copies of books I purchased multiples of in the 80's. I bought multiples hoping to sell them for books I still need, which it seems a lot of people did. I was hoping for someone to shed some light on the matter from personal experience meaning purchases and sales in different parts of the country (and outside of it.
  4. Most of my collection that I purchased new was from local comic book stores or regular book stores that offered comics along with all the other books they had. I was a weekly shopper but even so I would miss some releases of comics I really wanted. Not sure how I figured it out but in So Cal. the newsstand copies came out about a week after the direct editions. Never occurred to me that they would be rarer. I did know it was difficult pulling nice copies so I got around that by finding out when the local news stand got in their comics. I told the owner I would spend a minimum of $20 if I could open the stacks. He agreed so I also put them out on the spinners too. So my questions this: how rare are newsstands from this age and what sort of premium do you place on them over a direct edition? I just got this PWJ #1 9.8 back from CGC and there are no recent sales of newsstand copies. What's it worth? Thanks

  7. Hello welcome to the boards. This topic would be addressed better if you put it in "Hey buddy, can you spare a grade? That being said, I have seen similar manufactory flaws with books I purchased in the Copper age. I am unsure how CGC would grade the flaw but that particular issue of Uncanny X-Men should definitely be sent in for grading.

  12. Well today's is one of the best days I have had in quite a while. It came it finally came! I felt like Sid from Toy Story. If anyone knows how to get a Thank You to Kevin Eastman I would appreciate a PM. I rarely seek out autographs even though I have some seriously good signatures from actors. Most of the time I don't bother stars because I could get in trouble with work. In this case I would have loved to meet Mr. Eastman in person and given my absolute best THANK YOU. 9.8 goodness and he either mistakenly gave me a remark or someone likes me upstairs.

  15. My TMNT 3 finally shipped today. It was marked received on 12/30/2020 and went to Grading and quality control on Monday. I have to say I am happy with the grade too. I'll post a picture when I get it next week.
  16. I've been on the boards for quite a while now. Longer than my profile shows because for years I would just read. I wouldn't say a word because what's being said is ridiculous and I don't particularly want the negative attention focused back on me. When the 2007 thread was posted I was reading it and thinking how awful it was. Some of the comments made are just embarrassing. Why a moderator didn't step in at the start and control some of the mud slinging I don't know. I didn't know Dan passed away. Life is short. My collection is better because I made multiple purchases over the years from Showcase. Sometimes I overpaid, on rare occasion I had a return. What does it matter now? Most of the time I got books I really really wanted.
  17. Just bought and received several (silver age) books from Silver and was very happy with the result. Great packing great storage materials for the comics and spot on grading. About as good an experience that I have had here on the boards. Thanks
  18. Got my books in today's mail. Perfect experience If these last books stay much longer I will have to buy them too.
