Then - probably.
The seventies era - to now - have changed so much.
I did some stints at Outoukompu ( a Nickel mine) and Big Bell (Gold).
Theres a gym,pool,wet mess (bar), library,restaurant,cleaners, fly-in,fly-out etc etc.
Zero tolerance for drunkeness,fighting,drugs etc.
At Big Bell, 2 guys punched on - both were on a chartered plane within the hour - gone.
The mining industry doesn't need grudges - it's dangerous enough as it is.
I did the blood,urine and hair tests etc - plus hearing assessments - no corners were cut - you screw up - you are out.
But that movie, whilst filmed in the 70's - probably is representative of the 40's/50's.
As you say - crazy film though.
