  1. I'm not going to argue with Batman #1's first place slot, thanks in large part to the significance of the characters it introduced, but in terms of enjoyability, a very good underrated book (cover-to-cover) in my mind is the 1939 NY World's Fair.
  2. Some of those runs are really, really tough to complete. Great job! The cover artwork & colors on many of those books are so cool.
  3. To be fair, she was giving him a bad time. There is that. Where the hell have you been? I've posting for months, and no one ever commented on my books, making me angrier than a buyer of a high-grade Mad #1 before the warehouse find. Then I suddenly realized I had accidentally been posting on the GGC Forums, which was sort of embarrassing. Anyway, long story short, I'm back.
  4. Well, I didn't know that you were, but that's a board rule, so I guess I have little choice. I hope no one here is a Wings collector:
  5. To be fair, she was giving him a bad time.
  6. Wow, I didn't know that. Bad luck for the consignors; that's typically a very difficult book. I'll go a different direction with this one:
  7. That's funny, I immediately thought it was Bob Kane when I first saw it.
  8. I posted it about seven pages (and two months) back. Here it is again, along with one of the others from that Speed run (#13, a tough book in any grade):
  9. I like that Zip 22 a lot. Excellent pick-up. Here's one I got recently, one of the first non-pedigree/Centaur/key books I've bought in a while, but I adore this cover. If anyone knows where the Church copy of this book is, I'd be eternally grateful for the info.
  10. Just catching up on this thread. Love that book Steve! Here's one of my Prize Churches:
  11. The dirigible cover is nice but I prefer this one so much more. Smoking acquisitions CMan. Congrats Soooo, does Andy scan your books when he visits Chicago? Yeah, but he doesn't visit nearly as much as he used to. Turns out he's got this thing called a "real job" and they're not big fans of "unlimited vacation whenever you want it", so he rations his time back home. I've got some more cool Church books trapped in slabs for cracking/scanning at some point. Maybe Christmas-time. As for the Speeds, individually a number of the covers are only ok, very primitive with amateurish proportioning, but collectively they're super cool. I love this time period of the Golden Age.
  12. From the same Church run, this one reminds me of a pre-JLA Brave & Bold cover, two decades earlier. I love the green.
  13. Here's another from that Speed run. I like dirigible covers.
  14. Newly acquired Church copy of Green Mask #6, to go with my #8. Now I'll obsess for the next 25 years looking for the MH Green Mask #7.
  15. Yes, those books are so exactly up my alley. Very tough to find in any grade, early Golden Age superhero, Church. I haven't bought many books in the past two years, but I wanted these.
  16. Here's the Church copy of a book you don't see that often. I love the early Golden Age feel to this one, and the color scheme.
  17. Church. Seriously, no idea. I'm not a very good grader at the highest end, and I buy a lot of raw Church books, so there's no 3rd party opinion. I have Andy (october) grade most of my books, but I frequently tell him not to bother on the Church copies because I don't think it's that relevant. That said, I just checked my notes and he did grade this book, giving it a 9.4.
  18. I haven't posted a book in what seems like ages, and I don't think I ever showed the Exciting 4 which slots in between the two I put up months ago. So here it is:
  19. I'd be thrilled if I were you. It's so cool to find books via unconventional avenues. Great story!
  20. I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on with this cover. The gutter is to catch the tears, I get that. But why bring them to that other guy's bowl? And why float money in there too? Wouldn't the coins Woozy's dropping in just sink to the bottom? And who's the 3rd crying guy who looks like a caricature of someone famous back then? A no-prize to the first person who can provide a coherent explanation. To understand the meaning of this cover one must first understand the genius that is Jack Cole...... Its from the story with that sad looking character in the window. His name is Sanders. He is a petty crook who tries to get a bit part in a play to make some money. While auditioning, he gets coached by this famous theater man how to put ALL his emotion into his facial expressions. Being trained for the part of a really sad person.....he ends up having the entire cast and crew weeping with grief at how sad he looks.....and they all end up just giving him all their money and valuables. They dub him Sadly Sadly Sanders. Sanders then goes out into the city to try his new found power on the public in general, starting with a Brinks bank truck. The guards take one look at him and just start bawling....claiming they have no right to be happy or own possessions while such sad misery exists in the world and proceed to give Sanders all the money from the back of the truck. No one can look at Sanders face without it breaking them down into a fit of blubbering weeping sadness.....even Plastic Man. The story takes a turn when Sanders is captured by Plas but a crowd of people witness the arrest and feel so sorry and sad for Sanders that they begin attacking Plas to free him..... believing that no who looks THAT sad could possibly be a criminal. Plas is overcome by the rabid crowd and fakes his death. Sadly ends up going to Plas' funeral to get the last laugh and when he does, Plas smacks him silly and hauls him off to jail. Its a great story and a prime example of Coles abiltiy to write and draw the most absurd and fantastic situations for his hero. I hope that was coherent Pheeee-nomenal. Thank you kindly. I like the twist whereupon Plas fakes his own death. Genius.

  22. Thank you. (thumbs u Another day ... another Airboy. This one has a nice A Knight is Made back-up story. I'll try to scan it if time permits - I'm sure they're feeling bad enough about the whole "plane crashing, going to die" thing without Airboy taunting them from his cockpit.
  23. Very nice I love the cover art! Win Mortimer, an underappreciated artist, but he did a lot of great covers in his time. I'm a huge fan of his, as you can imagine
  24. I love this book. Nice pick-up, Dan! Incredibly rare.
  25. Here's his little buddy, two issues later. The colors are unbelievable. I know people really start digging this run once the Black Terror appears, and I don't blame them, but the mini-run before #6 (when the inking on the covers gets too heavy) really floats my boat.
