  1. Great thread - I love pre-code crime, horror and GGA as much as the next guy, but I agree some of the other esoteric books deserve equal attention. I'll take this opportunity to revisit my first post on these boards. Though, I guess it kind of qualifies as GGA.
  2. Thanks Scrooge- great link - the Our Army at War #84 cover is probably worth picking up on it's own merits -- If I do something like this, it would probably be in a couple years after I've picked up other stuff I'm looking for. And I'd probably start with books I like to begin with, like pre-hero Marvel ( I might even have 1 or 2 already - I should check), and I already have Action 254 (for the bizarro story). I also like the idea of collecting what would have been on the newstand when I was born - a slightly trickier proposition as I'm not sure if all publishers post-dated in the same way. I do know that it would involve buying Showcase #22 - as I had a copy when I was a teenager with a late July date written on the cover.
  3. Bobby Benson's B-Bar-B Riders # 14 is one of my favorite covers from the Atom Age. I have a HG copy I bought from Motor City 10 years ago, and never realized that Schomburg did the pencils, but looking at it, it makes sense. Did he do anything else for ME? Scrooge, good job posting the decap page - if that doesn't convince horror collectors the book belongs in their collection, I don't know what will. The great thing about the book, is that it doesn't seem hard to find - even in HG - there is probably a copy on ebay right now. Keep those posts coming - I may have to rethink the whole collecting by date idea - anyone know if there is anything prohibitively expensive cover dated July 1959? Or maybe I should just look for books date-stamped with that month.
  4. Like alot of people I let my CBG sub lapse after I discovered ebay.
  5. Kudos to Doiby_Dickles (aka Larry) for hooking me up with a Wonderworld #7. Great packaging and a great book!
  6. Congrats! Great cover! - and the price doesn't seem all that crazy- wasn't there a BIN on that auction higher than that? The Chesler I'd love to find is Dynamic #8, but it seems any copy I see, the seller is asking way too much for ( I'm not sure if anyone's buying, but if they are I guess it's only too much for me ). By the way Rip, you don't happen to have an extra copy of the Strange Detective you took your avatar from do you?
  7. Those Martian bastids - they'll pay for this!
  8. Jon, who did the covers for Miracle Comics? A notch above in quality compared to the usual obscure title circa 1940. The style looks familiar. Regarding Space Western, I surprised to read in the latest CBM that the title was created and written by Walter (The Shadow) Gibson.
  9. Love that cover to My Greatest Adventure #1, great color and composition - dynamic content. If it wasn't a highly valued first issue, It would be on my want list.
  10. I love that glass dome control center as the robot's "brain".
  11. While they often showed a bold use of color - the covers of most pre-code DC "horror" books look less scary than alot of post-code Atlas. But some of the sci-fi covers were amazing- I wouldn't mind seeing some more of those posted.
  12. "It finally happens" - HAH! It seems like Superman was "getting married" or already married on the cover of at least one SA comic every year for a while.
  13. I'd forgotten about that CBM article - neat idea. I wouldn't do it myself as it would involve buying too many books I don't find very interesting, but I love the concept. Interesting to see that a third of all comics published in that month were either Western or Romance, two genres of limited appeal to collectors today. Are you going to be buying any vintage spinner racks to display your collection? BTW, I've eaten tommyfoxwood's dust on an auction or two myself, so you have my sympathies.
  14. That "fantastic creature" looks to be more of a quadrapus.
  15. Beautiful Menace #5 I'm usually not covetous of HG grade copies of books I only have in low grade - but those rich colors against an intense black cover is making my mouth water.
  16. Of course Burntboy is likely the only one here who actually paid 10¢ for the books he posts.
  17. Nice books esquirecomics - gotta love the AA#16 - 1st appearance AND a great cover
  18. 45 - bought my first GA in 1971 - a bunch of Quality Blackhawks for a quarter apiece - a year later I bought 3 GA books off a kid in the neighborhood for $9 (including a mid-grade Green Lantern #38) - it wasn't long before I was selling off my SA to buy old ECs, and selling them to buy More Funs, and then selling them to buy weed --oops! I sold the last of my GA in the early 80s - and got sucked back in again when I started buying old pre-code crime books for $3 apiece at some huge comic store in NYC (Forbidden Planet? - I can't recall the name) - in the mid 80s - very slowly I expanded into more expensive pre-code crime, then horror, then oddball stuff, and eventually super-hero GA by the mid 90s. I still only buy maybe 10-20 GA and pre-code books a year and mostly in the $20-$200 range - It's a hobby and not something I feel comfortable sinking alot of money into.
  19. Wow! I'd say you did very well with this book! Classic cover & The book looks great! I guess the couple of finger prints on the back cover knocked it down, 'cause it looks VF to me! How much did you save, as opposed to the Metro $1,200.00 price? I checked out the final price on Heritage - nice job! Congrats on a great pickup - with great eye-appeal, as I'm guessing the BC is what brings the grade lower than a VF. I remember when Terry of Terry's Comics was selling that double cover for $200 back in the mid-nineties (unless there's more than 1 VF double cover copy) - I didn't even call, as It was more than I wanted to spend for a copy at the time (foolish me - I eventually found a cheaper copy, but nowhere near that nice)- IIRC whoever bought it sold it shortly thereafter for around $500 in one of Continental's CBG auctions - How long has Metro had it?
