  1. Kenny, I have been looking for a decent copy of this book for the past two years......ever since we last spoke about it. Maybe one of these days a sweet copy will magically appear. Maybe just in time for Christmas? You are gonna have to fight Ellen for it. She loves this thread, and this book. She took it from me.
  2. Get rid of the press. If you are going to use a heat press get a model that allows you to dial the pressure up, or down to suit what you are pressing. There is a decent amount of touch involved in knowing how much is too much, or not enough when closing the press.
  3. I would actually agee with Cheesy, the results you posted are not typical for the minimal approach you said you took. But results can vary greatly from person to person so don't take it personally. Consider the audience, we know you want to make a good showing and many are still skeptical. Keep at it and keep posting your results if you enjoy it. I will just watch from afar now because I am the poopy head who wont talk openly about what might or might not work better.
  4. Well this is obviously not good. Still damp after a heat press? wtf Sounds like this is due in part from using mylars to prep the book with(which also is responsible for the unnatural flatness), and too much moisture to start with. Applying moisture directly is typically a big no no because it can be applied unevenly. Scott touched on this earlier. Was the Silver Surfer book still damp after pressing?
  5. Glad to see you making progress Mike, and having fun while you are learning. The real test is to hold the book by the spine and let the outeredge hang down. Waggle it back and forth a bit and see if the covers corners flare up, or get what is called the "fly away wing effect" This is a typical when too much heat, or moisture is exposed to one side and not dried/cooled properly. If not then you are on the right track.
  6. I am just curious why you took the before/after pics of the book in the bag? Show us the durn book! And I would not waste your money of SCPF. SRP is more then adequate. But Talas has a sample book of all the mylars and films they carry for $6 if you want to check it out before dropping big money on it.
  7. I think you are not too overly hot Mike, depends on how your book is prepped and if your press was pre heated A sheet of Mylar is not much of a buffer if you ask me.(and as you saw it dimpled from the heat) How long did you let it cool down under weight because the warping present on the bottom edge reminds me of some experiments I did years ago when I wanted to see what books looked like if pressed for too long, too much heat, not cooled properly etc..etc I will see if I can find those photos.
  8. I just wanted to make sure everyone knows I made this thread over 3 years ago. I used an iron because it was all I had available, but it really isn't all that different then using a professional tacking iron. And while the bend was removed, the book never saw a "press" To me this would be important to those who do not like the idea of books being cooked, or made into pancakes in a dry mount press. And why I still say the term "pressed" is too broad a term that can cover a variety of vastly different processes. Simply saying a book was pressed when only one corner was worked on is a completely different beast then removing a spine roll. Perhaps one day different forms of pressing will be preferred over others, if disclosed of course.
  9. Parchment paper is used in baking at high temps to line a sheet tray so it lends itself to acting as a buffer in a heat press but does not have the release properties of ..well release paper. Unlike wax paper, which as it's name implies is waxy or glossy because it is impregnated, or coated with wax. Heating this up in a press would not be advisable, unless of course you wanted shiny comics, I would also never stick Mylar in a press because it is plastic. It is also worth mentioning that if you are having ink transfer, or sticking problems you are using way to much heat.
  10. Good to know Brian, you do realize this thread is from 06 right?
  11. He had a reason Sean, he was trying to point out that I pressed a NCB bend on the corner of a key book in my experiment and should be raked over the coals for it. I guess. What's funny is shortly after I made this thread Matt contacted me to see if I had interest in training under him. It was a hoot to re read how hot headed I was! Those were the days.
  12. Great idea and execution We need what the Coin guys have, a sub forum of "What you need to know- about Comic Collecting" All the vital sticky worthy "how to" threads in one place for everyone to have access to without clogging up the top of CG with a dozen sticky threads. Again, great job Mike.
  13. Isn't this something Steve or Cap should be revealing vs. hearing it second hand on a public forum? Not trying to defend his actions, if true, but this doesn't seem to be one of those issues that should be exposed by anyone other than the original parties on a message board... Jim I agree Jim but if this is true is pretty darn pathetic. My parents would have whooped my arse. I would normally agree with you but in this instance I knew Steve was not going to out Connor here(ask him yourself if you want to know why) but agreed people should be made aware that the kid has lost his way. Steve told enough people about what happened to get the word out, I just felt it needed to be heard here because there are many board members who do not read every thread or are not privy to every conversation and have no idea of the past or present history Connor is quickly accumulating. And as I said in my post, Connor can feel free to come here and set me straight and tell his side. I wish he would actually because I am flabbergasted as to what could have possibly been going through his mind at the time to think that prank was anything but malicious and extremely damaging to Steve.
  14. Man, that is sad. Steve told a bunch of us the story. I know, I was waiting on everyone else to share with the class but you didn't
  15. Not sure where to post this but figured this was the place. In SD Steve B. took Connor(CapFreak) under his wing, and as I understood it hooked him up with a hotel, passes etc.. Very nice thing to do...giving a kid a second chance because we all make mistakes. Long Story short, Conner somehow got Steve's cell phone and left a less then desirable message on Steve outgoing voice mail. Why I do not know, but I do know it cost Steve dearly in terms of cleaning up the mess. Connors parents were contacted and they pretty much did nothing. If any of this is incorrect Conner please feel free to set me straight, otherwise take a hike.
  16. You get to carry the class of 02's books to school.... Your comic books? OK!

  18. Got these in today from Ritter, always admired both covers. 25 is also a Big Apple Copy
  19. Even in poor lighting you should be able to spot even minor CT. Most of the CT you would expect to see in this era of books is Black, along the spine line and or around word balloons etc. As Scott said look for creases that break color on either side of a black line and odds are it was hit with a pen/marker. Bleed through from being applied too heavily is obviously easy to spot. Holding the book at an angle to allow you to see the cover gloss is the easiest way to spot CT, even minor does not normally have any gloss. Also buy a small magnifying glass or loupe, so when you find an area you think might have been hit you can look more closely. Black light type detection is not really useful because if the CT is heavy enough for a black light to show it, it is easy enough to spot with your naked eye.
  20. This whole thing stinks to high heaven. You sell CS a TWENTY-longbox lot for $100 a box, toss in a Heroes Inc case for free, then he miraculously comes on selling FIFTEEN boxes, supposedly unsearched and for the "same price I bought them at" of $150 a box. Do the math people, and CS obviously cherry-picked the 20 longboxes, sold off or kept about 6-7 of them (as Filter81 has confirmed), used the Heroes Inc to extend this to 15 longboxes full, then resold the remaining junk for MORE than he bought the original 20 longboxes for. This is bad news, and from claims in his sales thread, this is an obvious scam perpetrated on the forum faithful. After skimming the recent posts this is what I walked away with too. I have no problem with CS cherry picking the boxes, or asking what he did for them as they were his books and his sales thread. But he should not have advertised what he was selling to what he bought from Adam as the same thing because clearly they were not. It sounds like a classic case of passing the buck, or in this case junky comics.
  21. Any comment included in that post about the CGC process? I said Plitch wears army boots. Does that count?
  22. How did you prep the cover you ironed? How hot was your iron and did you really steam it? Regardless, I honestly do not think you can compare your steam ironed comic to that wet blotted page in the photo. Wetting, and pressing individual folios is totally different then pressing a comic. Could pressing leave behind visible clues a cover was pressed?, possibly. But to try and assign specific visible attributes to pressing is guesswork for the most part unless you had a pre pressed example compare it to. And wtf happened to my earlier post? Bailey(whoever that is) quoted part of it , but the post itself isn't there anymore.
