  1. There is a probation list and "Hall of Shame" here - be sure to consult that before buying. As well be sure to ask for references or check their "kudos". Lastly, do a name search here for the seller. The person may not be on the probation list but may have just escaped going there. I've dealt with one like that here. Never assume anything. Don't be afraid to ask questions. All this to say - most of the people are straight up but always go in with eyes wide open.
  2. As distribution in 1961 was not the same as it is now I guess that arrival dates may have depended upon where you were in the US and Canada. What's the significance of Aug 8 if we have all of these other dates on books? Could also be the possibility that in a few cases that a kid or two got a hold of dad's date stamp and was just dying to try it out on something
  3. This makes 3 different date stamps that I've seen on this book. Two on the HA website have Aug 16 and Aug 23 while a couple more have "Aug 8PM" on them (might be the same book). Is there consensus on the arrival date?
  4. I've always been a big fan of the Thing's depiction in FF1, FF2 and even FF5. I think they should have left him with this true "Thing" look as opposed to "humanizing" him starting as early as FF3...
  5. So could it mean that there was another one done with the colour combination that appeared on the comic?
  6. Kind of makes me wonder why someone would save this but not the original art
  7. Agree completely. I'm not familiar with the pressing process - how could this have possibly happened assuming that the pressing was the cause?
  8. Very nice set! This is interesting for a couple of reasons: 1. The envelope is handwritten. This is the only one that I can recall seeing that wasn't typed. I wonder why this one was hand written - any thoughts? 2. Hake's recently auctioned a pre-printed acknowledgement card addressed and post marked May 13, 1941 to the same Carl von Hake . This makes it very early in the club's existence. The card thanked Carl for joining the club, asked him to write in etc etc. It must have been a very short lived item as I believe that this is the only known example. I've compiled a list of 20 or so names, addresses and card numbers of club members. If you have any, please post them!
  9. I wouldn't go near a book with brittle pages - way too far down the degradation scale for me. In fact, I wouldn't even consider a book with tan pages. Off-white and up for me...
  10. Anyone who conducts business in this manner should be outed immediately. It then allows anyone dealing with them or contemplating dealing with them to go in with eyes wide open. Back to the original question: the more eyes on a book the better IMO
  11. Did anyone take photos of the room(s) that they can post?
  12. I have no problem with an artist signing a piece of art...as long as it's outside of the original art area i.e. somewhere in the border area. The art is not ruined in any way and if future caretakers don't like the signature then they can either not look at it or matt the art. I had Stan Lee sign a few pages of vintage Marvel art decades ago but I had him do it in the margins. I don't consider that "defiling" in the least - now had it been in a panel, well that's a whole different kettle of fish. In fact, with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS (Ditko, Frazetta, Sprang...), I would most likely not buy the page just due to the signature placement in a panel. People allow creators to defile comics all of the time by getting creators to place obtrusive signatures all over the cover . Let's not have that stupidity creep into the original art field.
  13. I don't mind a cleanly placed signature on the splash page in the blank area outside the art. I think in the decades to come, people will lament the amount of books defaced with signatures on the covers...
  14. How many of these did I see in 9.4 and up back in 1966? Very nice copy by the way...
  15. Yes Bloor is by FAR the biggest. Be sure to check out the DVDs/movie & music books in the basement...some esoteric stuff there for sure... This being said, there is a possibility that you may find something at the Edward Street location (that's near the Snail) that you wouldn't at Bloor. BUT if you only have time for one make sure that it's the Bloor St location.
  16. Agreed...now would someone kindly post some pages from FF 1; FF2; FF4;....
  17. I highly recommend BMV - especially the location on Bloor. The 3rd floor is entirely TPBs, hard covers, old comics (when I say old, there are some silver age books there) magazines etc etc. The TPBs and hardcovers are sold at much less than cover - there's always something interesting there.
  18. I wouldn't even call the first piece close. WAY too many things wrong with it. 1. Charlie Brown's hand and tongue. 2. No brim on Linus' hat. 3. Lucy's feet. 4. Sally's eyes and hands. 5. Schulz would never detail a wall like that. 6. Snoopy's foot with the shading. 7. Marcie's mouth line. These are just the ones that jumped out at me immediately. Someone went to great lengths to deceive here what with the stamp and all but the quality of the "drawings" leaves no question that they are all absolutely fake.
  19. A lot of Gold Key books were tied in with TV shows. I suspect that in some cases, by the time licences were obtained, artists/writers found etc etc the show itself had been cancelled hence one and done as far as the comic went. In a lot of cases, the covers were outstanding but the interior art left a lot to be desired or the comic stories weren't as good as the TV show stories.
