As these have exploded in popularity even more so the last 2+ years, have opinions/perceptions changed at all  or bec further entrenched with all of the new available data?

Obviously having an 9.8 sketch is the preference, but I take into consideration many factors such as the quality of the sketch, the artist, style etc.  . Some of my favorite sketch covers in my collection are not 9.8s.

You're correct that these sketch covers have exploded in popularity over the last few years and  I think there are many collectors that appreciate it, except for those die hard OA collectors.  I understand some OA collectors look down on sketch covers, but some sketch covers by some artists rival 11x14 OA commissions. IMO.

When i read these threads and the prices of these books, there is no mystery in my mind why the cycle of boom and bust continues in our economy.

By and large these books are being bought up by people who have no business spending money like this.

Many of these buyers will be living in their car or perhaps a cardboard box (if the car was financed) when the next bust hits.

I saw that too.  A strong sale, although about $300 below the all time GPA high of $4500 (although, granted, when that sale happened it was about $1k over the prior GPA high).  Didn't you sell yours? :baiting:

I also saw an X 23 1 Dell'otto sell for $1800 a couple days ago, which is a high for that book.

I thought that $4200 sale was a gpa high! Interesting .

I sold my copy for around 3k thinking it was a good deal. Lol

The only difference between the two is the forehead shadow of Batman (one has it and the other doesn't) and the elastic on Catwoman's goggles (one has more lines)..... Other than those two, I don't see any difference.

I guess he's so used to drawing Batman and Catwoman, that he can drawing them almost identically. It is a sketch though.....

I guess if he's asked to draw Batman and Catwoman head sketches, that's his default drawing. He doesn't have to think about poses or head position or where to draw

Here is a picture of my batman/bruce Wayne sketch. With those remarks, I think the has very limited space to work off of so its easier for him to do the same standard pose.

The shilling on these big modern variant books makes one wonder if any of these high prices are legit.  Maybe only if offered at the big auction houses will the value truly be determined, and not many of these books ever seem to end up in those.  hm

There is shilling not just in modern books though. hm

Nice sale on that spawn though. I could’ve sworn I saw a boardie selling one here a few months ago.

I do not really collect variants or modern books but if I see something in LCS that is like under 5$ I maybe pick it up. Really like this cover. Sometimes JSC variants and variants in general have female characters drawn sexier than normally and it does not really represent what that character really is in comics.

one of my fave JSC covers! $5 is a steal.
