Books you just cant find in the Wild
Brock replied to fastballspecial's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
I've also found 10 or 12 of these in the wild (typically for less than $2), and flipped them all quickly on eBay. -
Yeah, Tijuana Bibles didn’t exactly rely on decompressed storytelling.

How about CVA, which stickers a manufactured collectible on a manufactured collectible of a manufactured collectible of a manufactured collectible...

Buyers who use the last auction sale to buy a book
Brock replied to blazingbob's topic in Comics General
Fixed-price sales may also reflect what one single (potentially impatient or… not smart) person listed one copy at. -

Back in the early 1980s, some of us discovered that many of Michael Golden’s Micronauts covers seemed to pop while wearing 3D glasses… if I recall correctly, there were some letters in the letter column about this, too.

Just an aside here, but there’s a really good thread about the new Overstreet over in the Golden Age section. It also focuses on the top GA books list, like this thread is focusing on the top BA list. I find it fascinating how different the preoccupations and concerns of the GA and BA collectors are…

I think this is the simplest summation of the discussion. There are lot of people in this hobby who love curation and categorization, and more power to them. From my perspective, the way that the folks at Overstreet choose to curate and categorize their list makes sense, and I’m not as convinced by your approach to categorization, but that’s just a personal opinion. As always, the age of the Internet allows us all you to create, curate, categorize - and publish - anything you want.
-
I can certainly share this information (as an advisor) with the folks at Overstreet, but I think @shadroch hits the nail on the head. This is meant to be a list of the 25 most valuable Bronze Age comics… it says so on the label, in a sense. It sounds like some of you just want a list of the top 25 non-variant Bronze Age comics, possibly with or without Cerebus included. This is also a fine list, it’s just not the one that Overstreet prepared. Everyone is equally welcome to create their own lists, and share them however they want.

Moderns that are heating up on ebay!

Just the usual Catwoman 1:25 Sozomaika variant, as far as I can see... -
Moderns that are heating up on ebay!

In at least some jurisdictions, eBay changed the way the views counter worked last months - this could be part of the reason. -
Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...

Almost like it was summer convention season or something... -
Another deadbeat "buyer": ebay handle oso_andy, real name Andres de Jesus Gonzalez Fentanes Reached an accepted offer, and never paid, nor did he respond to multiple messages in both English and Spanish.

In my schoolyard circles, we had plenty of Superman vs. debates… Superman vs. Dracula, Superman vs. Shazam, Superman vs. Hulk, Superman vs. Thor, etc. but we never debated Superman vs. Spider-Man. In fact, when the book came out the whole DC/Marvel was exciting, but our general reaction was “WTF?” There was no way, in our minds, that this was a fight worth thinking about. Heat vision? It’s over. Super speed? It’s over. Fly into space where you don’t have to breathe? It’s over. When it came to Supes vs. Ali, though, they took this whole idea and turned it on its head… the story worked precisely because Superman gave up his powers to have a fair fight - and Ali won. On my schoolyard, at least, this made it a much bigger deal. As an aside, @bronze johnny in an earlier post mentioned Star Wars vs. Star Trek… while we’re talking my schoolyard, let me point out that Star Trek was for old people, and the real action was in Star Wars vs. Battlestar Galactica.

Thanks for the input… I think we were discussing what it meant that both US and Canadian prices were on the sticker, and whether that could help inform us on when or by whom the sticker was applied. I’d love to hear your thoughts about that! That’s interesting - do you have some sources or additional info for this? It certainly does open up a possible origin for these books.

I was using B&N as an example, as it was mentioned in the conversation earlier. The basic point is that there are no bookstore chains that operate in both countries. There are stores that do operate on both sides of the border, though they were scarcer in the 1990s. Walmart, for example, opened its first Canadian store in 1994, and Kingdom Come was released in 1996. But - to the best of my knowledge - while they were selling books in multipacks, sometimes with specially-produced editions (perhaps like the DC Universe variants), they weren’t selling individual books. Even now, Walmart doesn’t sell single comic books (like the DC giants) in Canada. While this doesn’t prove anything, it’s suggestive of stickering taking place at the publisher or distributor level, i.e. BEFORE the books get divided into retailer orders.

A retailer sticker probably wouldn’t have both Canadian and US prices. Why sticker a Barnes and Noble book with a Canadian price, when they have no stores in Canada?

What are you Reading now ..... other than comics ?

I’m a couple of chapters into Noel Malcolm’s book Agents of Empire: Knights, Corsairs, Jesuits and Spies in the Sixteenth Century Mediterranean World. So far, it’s pretty good… -
I last watched these about 5 years ago. I thought they held up well, and were still fun - I’m pretty sure my nostalgia filters were set to “high” though, so I could be biased.
