  1. This was all already gone over in the digital comics thread and it didn't end well but I believe it would either have no effect or it would actually have a negative effect on sales as a whole. Piracy/file-sharing isn't the enemy.

Btw, I just went to a torrent site, found a torrent for Think Tank #3 and it said this: "Downloaded 15 times." :ohnoez:

What are you doing on a torrent site? Just browsing? :)

I thought it was pretty obvious that I was searching for Think Tank to see how many times it was downloaded...

  2. it would be interesting to see, if piracy dried up tomorrow, what the increase in sales would look like...if it changed at all. Who knows, it might even drop.

    hm

Piracy does increase exposure. I wonder if (I'm sure there is) there is data available on piracy conversion to legitimate purchases (ie: pirate #1, buy the trade)? Interesting...

There is only 1 independent study I am aware of that studied piracy and its effects on the entertainment industry and it concluded that piracy did not have a negative effect on sales.

If you want more anecdotal evidence there are loads of creators who are pro piracy. See Neil Gaiman:

Paul Coelho has had a similar experience. "As an author, I should be defending ‘intellectual property’, but I’m not. Pirates of the world, unite and pirate everything I’ve ever written!"

Do you know what's funny? That makes me want to buy his books

  4. Piracy is cool and then you realize your ripping off the really cool people and that's not cool. I read the letters column in Think Tank #5 this weekend and they have tracked the pirated versions of the books to 10,000 unique users OR double the paid readership. I wonder how much you would be helped if your paycheck was doubled... hm

Amazing. Even pirates can't track exactly how many time their files are shared.

And of course, every one of those 10,000 (lol) was a lost sale.

  5. Wow, did anyone read this review?

    http://www.craveonline.com/comics/previews/203291-todd-the-ugliest-kid-on-earth-1-no-thanks

    It starts with this:

In what has to be the most ill-advised release in comic book history, Image Comics unleashes a tale of an ugly kid who is mistakenly accused of being a child killer. Even if the entire Connecticut massacre hadn’t happened, Todd, The Ugliest Kid On Earth would be a monument to bad taste that few could beat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not prude against off color humor or even bad taste but this, this isn’t even smart enough to be funny.

    And ends with this:

Todd, The Ugliest Kid On Earth is awful. Don’t just skip it. Burn it.

I don't know whether to  or :roflmao:

  6. Generally anything that's hyped *is* quality though. Mind MGMT, The Sword, Chew etc are all great.

Blackacre, mind the gap, skullkickers, hardcore.... More?

    27

I think Mind the Gap is excellent regardless of how it's doing in the secondary.

Exactly. The monetary value of something doesn't necessarily reflect its quality.

None of those have had the 'going to be made into a tv show/movie hype', have they? And anyway, I've only read Mind The Gap from that list and it's awesome.

  8. Get it now before they are $200 on eBay. :roflmao:

True, but I actually want to see if i like the series before ordering 1-3 in 9.8 per Beachbums policies.

Is that 9.8 on DF legit? I wanted to join Beachbum's sub thing but after he asked what books I was interested in he didn't get back to me so I've no idea how the whole thing works, how much it costs (for a UKer) etc as that what I was asking about and no reply. I mean, do you have to pre-order? I'm guessing not since ComicsNYC22 has just said he's waiting until he knows he likes the series?

  9. Thanks, Kachoo -- I've yet to read Li'l Depressed Boy, but I should take a look.

And that action figure you posted is AMAZING. Where can I get that?

That's "Danbo" from a manga called "Yotsuba&". He's so cute I bought it without ever having read it. I'm not sure where you can get them (I can't remember where I got mine) - I think they have to be imported from Japan so they can be a bit pricey. Probably try amazon and ebay.

  10. We are putting our con list together -- Emerald City is our first (March 1-3) and then we'll definitely be at Wondercon, San Diego and NYCC. Maybe HeroesCon? C2E2?

What's the St Louis con like?

    Any other suggestions?

If you get a chance to come to the UK, a con called Thought Bubble is really good. Nice size, plenty to do, see, people to talk to, meet etc but still reasonably intimate, like it's pure comics, not over-taken by hollywood so still has a soul ;) It's usually around November time. http://thoughtbubblefestival.com
