  1. Not sure how much value this adds to the discussion, but I did indeed stop by their shop (unannounced) this past Saturday afternoon (April 5). I can indeed confirm that Frank and his brother have a store less than one mile from my house (in a strip mall, in between the local Bank of America and the Post Office). I went in...both Frank and his brother were there. I introduced myself, we all shook hands, etc. They seemed fairly busy, so I didn't stay too long...about 10 minutes, all told. Frank took the time to show me some unfinished back sections of the shop, and we discussed how nice it would be to remodel that space and bring some comics in there. No comics in the shop, at present (primarily gold, coins, etc.). I left feeling like the benefit of the doubt was certainly warranted, seemingly nice guys, etc....at that point, I had no reason to think otherwise. My parting remarks were something like...'hey, let me know whenever you have time to bring some of your comics in here, I'd love to drop back by and look at your books, talk comics, maybe buy some, etc...' Spoon.
  2. In his profile, F.Palma lists a business website (a gold/silver/collectibles store). That store is located about a half-mile from my house. Easy for me to check out the situation - I just reached out via PM. On one of the pages of that website, there's mention that he is a previous owner of Palma Brothers Comics in Rochester. So, this is rapidly starting to sound legit.
  3. Just bought a couple of raw Betty and Me books from Richard - books as described, shipped fast with great communication - would buy from again. (thumbs u
  4. Along with formally removing the ability to start a trading thread in the general marketplace, perhaps? Not a bad idea...
  5. Here's another thought that keeps running through my head every time there's smoke coming from the PIF thread... The PIF thread is not a structural component of this site. The PIF thread was just that....a thread, started by one boardie, NamesJay...not that long ago, actually (6/15/12). Just like we all start threads in CG all the time...here's how he did it: His thread got stickied, and the rest is history. What would happen, say, if NamesJay comes into the PIF thread and posts something like "well, this thread of mine used to be fun, but it's not so fun anymore because of all this nonsense...seems like it generates more problems than virtue, so THREAD CLOSED."
  6. Right now, any one that wants to can make a trading thread in the general marketplace. Rule #10 from Arch's marketplace guidelines covers that: 10. If posting a trading thread you must list a dollar value price for the book that you WILL accept in TRADE VALUE, and you MUST put "TRADE ONLY" in the title of your thread if you will not accept money. Why the need for a separate trading thread? Just do it in the existing general marketplace structure and the existing marketplace rules will govern, right? Buyer would just be paying with books instead of cash...just a different form of currency. No need for a new set of rules, etc.
  7. I'm pretty sure you and I are in agreement here. Suppose the seller had instead applied the logic I discuss just above...the seller would have told the second taker something like "I'm sorry, but as the second taker, you're out of the picture at this point. The first taker has the chance to complete this transaction, and if he wants to pass the book along to someone else, that's between me, the first taker, and the potential 'third-party' recipient. If the book becomes available for sale again, I will re-post it in the thread as such, and then it's fair game again." Would this have been "better"?
  8. Pierson, of course. It's well settled. Not so fast...it's Edward, of course.
  9. Law school, right? You could indeed substitute in some of the scenarios that crop up around here and do similar mental gymnastics....
  10. Ahhhh, yes...now we arrive at the other issue...the rights of the second taker, especially in the context of the first taker passing on the book (for whatever reason...could be this scenario where they want to pass the book along, they simply don't pay for the book, whatever....any reason that the first taker has for not themselves purchasing the book). There seems to be this prevalent maintained assumption that a second taker has some rights in the matter, but again...not so sure. I'm starting to lean in the direction that the second take is technically meaningless, as well. If the second taker has any rights, then I better immediately start going around all the sales threads and posting up on any book I'm interested in even if it's already been taken, just in case the first taker backs out. Seems like a more common sense approach is that if the first taker falls through (for whatever reason), the seller announces that the book is available for sale again, and the first taker AFTER than announcement gains 'first taker' status. Not sure if this is the exact right approach, but again...just discussing...
  11. I agree. The only "right" the first taker has is to receive the book if and when they pay for it. Until that time, they control nothing. If the first taker wants to pass along the book to a bud, it's completely up to the seller whether or not to allow that, period. I agree, in most cases it seems there would be no objection by the seller, it's all cool, and things run along smoothly. If my hypothetical scenario comes to pass and the first taker wants to pass the book to a PL'er, the seller simply says "Absolutely not, I won't allow that. If you want the book to go to that PL bud of yours, feel free to sell it to him yourself after you've paid me and you have the book in your own hands." Right? In other words, the first taker technically has no "rights" other than to receive the taken book when paid for...then, and only then, do they have control over the fate of the book. Has to be this way, no?
  12. Let's push this discussion a little further (recall a few pages back I commented that both the issues of the "rights" of the initial taker AND the "rights" of the second taker were potentially thorny issues worthy of further discussion...): Suppose the OP has a rule in their sales thread that they won't sell to someone on the PL/HOS. Then, the first taker of a book in that thread is best buds with someone on the PL, and wants to give up the book to that PL'er. Can they do so, if they want to?
  13. Yep, I've seen a bit of discussion in old threads where this "allowing the dealers" issue was being discussed. It's thorny...I can understand both sides of the debate. I think you nail it, in that the sharks need to keep in mind that this is indeed, first and foremost, a collectors' forum, and that they way they conduct their "business" here can drastically affect their business...at least where I'm concerned.
  14. Although, there may be some here that disagree with this (i.e., the dealers whose job this is, where the books here are simply a source of inventory). And that seems to contribute to this conflict....alas...
  15. This whole scenario raises issues that are worthy of a more general discussion...it's actually quite complex (although I'm not saying it should be...just seems like that's the state of the world). There are two core issues here: 1) what are the "rights" of a thread purchaser with respect to a book he/she has "won", in terms of directing the book to someone else; 2) what are the "rights" of the person in a thread who posts the second 'take it'. If the answer is anything other than "none" to both questions, seems like all sorts of dysfunctional behavior can arise. Until today, I never thought about the need to specify rules in a sales thread that cover these issues, but I'm starting to think it'd be a good idea to do so. This shouldn't have to be this complicated...
  16. And, to make things perfectly clear....he clarifies that he doesn't want to deal with our krap... No, he just wants to deal our books.
  17. Love Journal #10 ? Confessions of the Lovelorn #52 ?
  18. Just wanted to bring my MAD magazine sales thread to your attention, over in Mixed: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=7521584&fpart=1 Slowly but surely putting a bunch of issues out there...highest issue is around 250, and working down from there...drop by! At minimum, the cover scans are fun to look at! Ed
  19. ^ I agree with this...makes a lot of sense as a solution. ^ There are a few problems here. First and foremost...it's a privilege, not a right, for any of us to be able to sell anything here on this site. Further, it is not incongruous for CGC to be willing to slab a potentially offensive image for you to personally and privately enjoy, while at the same time object to the public display of that image on their website. Finally, display of potentially vulgur/offensive images (which is an inherently subjective determination, to be determined by the admins) is indeed an explicit violation of the guidelines/terms of use of the site.
  20. A while back I ran a MAD paperback book sale over in mixed. I'm thinking I'm going to resuscitate that thread by adding in some MAD magazines...hopefully start later tonight. I'll list in reverse order, starting out around issue #250 and head down from there – not sure how far I’ll go…we’ll play it by ear, depending on whether there's much interest in these...could be a long-term project. Not sure how many MAD collectors we have around here, but the scans should be a blast to look at, at minimum! Hopefully you all can use some of these…keep an eye out for books that fit your cover themes and your birth-month issues...also, they're just plain fun to read (especially if you're a child of the 70's, like myself).
  21. Recently bought a raw TOS 53 from Mike, and couldn't be happier - awesome deal on the book, tight grading, and great communication all the way around. KUDOS!
  22. Yeah, understandable...once legality was raised as an issue and it got on your radar screen, not much choice but to poof it....
  23. Looks like this just became moot - Arch just posted a new rule in the forum guidelines: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=7476159#Post7476159
