I made this post in the AF#15 thread but it still applies more to X-Men #1 than anything else.

We are in a cyclical speculator selling to speculator pattern.  My problem with comics as investments is that unlike the stock market, you can't short them when they are overvalued.  Think a Hulk 181 in 9.4 isn't worth $10000?  Too bad, you can't do anything about it.  Nobody will sell at a loss so there is an endless cycle of price increases.
The group of speculators who banked on Disney buying fox hit their gold mine, they have to sell to the next group of speculators willing to buy that are hoping for some huge movie related news which people are already expecting.  Who will those speculators sell to?  A new group of speculators that didn't see fantastic four or x-men MCU movies coming?  With each cycle the pie shrinks more and more as I think the MCU is pretty much reached full exposure to the public at this point.  I don't think it can continue forever but we'll see I guess.  Based on my experience in stocks the best time to sell is when the market has reached a level of euphoric optimism.

I agree to a point, I think that your example is not the case with the higher grade silver age keys, I think the numbers on these books are low and most are in collectors hands , I feel like  flippers are not taking the risks on mega high value books. Dealers on the other hand definitely are responsible for  some of the churn. I know there are a couple high value flippers , even here on the boards there are a couple, but not enough to really effect the higher grade market. higher grade silver age keys are pretty rare comparably. What if we are not in a bubble? what if demand for these books is real and here to stay? The internet and some big businesses are hinting  that this is not going away. If you got into major comic keys in early 2000 you are sitting pretty, but even 2011 looked like a great entry point and I think Key books were severely undervalued. Who knows , even a clock is right 2 times a day .2c

I mean it doesn't look that bad honestly and I bought it from comic connect like that (they didn't mention the crack). A mater of fact I have not had good luck with them, about 50% of the slabs I buy from them the slabs are cracked with no mention of it.  Maybe I should pull it and get reholdered like you said if you think people will have issues with it... Advice is welcome.

I don't think the grade is affected at all and your listing is honest. You could go back to CC and ask the to re-holder it.

It's a great list, but I would just point out how hard it is to set expectations on price, especially for a complete novice.  There are several books on your list with prices that really jump out to me as low.  If you find a JIM #83 8.0 for $22,500, please let me know immediately so I can buy it.  :takeit:

+1000 some of these prices are really low . GPA misses a lot of bigger book sales.  One thing that just punches me in the face is how under valued DD #1 is! Also TTA #35 is so undervalued!

GSX1 is undeniably a monster. IMHO, the biggest of the 70s. While the all new, all different team deserves the attention, the original members never go completely away, and I think Prof X, Jean Grey and Cyclops are really the core of the new team. I feel like X-Men 1 is yet to hit its high point.

+1000 i think it will keep climbing!

Unfortunately I have no dollars and cents data to confirm this, but I've been  getting the feeling for a while that collectors aren't as hot on TOS 39 as they used to be. Could just be things going in cycles, but it seems like amongst the Marvel "Grails" it has fallen somewhat in desirability.

I've always loved the book and I'm proud to have one in my collection. Just curious where it falls  on the list of desirable keys for other collectors. Personally I would rank it only below AF15, Hulk 1 and FF1.

Really? its up 100 percent in 3 years.

  6. Deals all over eBay! some international bidder with oil money wanted a pedigree copy (not a pedigree, really)  I have seen written in several places, people making a big deal about the fact that there are not many pedigree copies of this book. That's the only thing I can think of, I don't think the sticker added 30 grand to this book. Also I wonder if the person who purchased the book knew the entire story with the mile high pedigree.

I read once that the rationale about Avengers 1 is that it is not the 1st appearance of the characters, just the team.

Brave and the bold #28 , same deal.  Great books that form legendary teams, but i don't think they will rise as much as traditional first appearances. ................or....................these are first appearances of legendary teams that will always be around therefor the team first appearances are grossly undervalued as compared to their peers.

Ultimately I think this will be the book to have, but while it's the first depiction of her as Ms Marvel, Point One is her first story as Ms Marvel. I'm very happy that I was forced to "settle" for a second print of the former the day after they announced the Captain Marvel movie and I went hunting for back issues.

I agree... CM17 2nd print....... ANMPO 1:75 ... and last ANMPO regular cover.

Hi Everyone. Hoping I can get some help about something.

A good longtime friend of mine has an incredible hoard. He has pretty much everything DC, Marvel, and everyone put out from about 1961 to 1980 (I'm Serious) . Plus Hundreds of Golden Age Comics also. Its quite a collection. He's been buying everything in sight since he was a small child. Most of it is mid grade and the Bronze Age ones are mostly VF-NM. I spent a long time inventorying most of it and I still can't figure out how he managed to pretty much not miss a single issue in 20 years.

Anyway, he decided to start selling some and I manage his ebay account (meaning I create the listings and ship for him). He just dropped off a bunch of comics and he brought his only graded comic to me to sell. Its a Fantastic Four #1 CGC 4.0.

So I saw that on Ebay a few 4.5's sold on auction for over 14K. I figure a 4.0 should get close to that. But I just read that paypal has a 10K sending limit. Selling a comic of this value on ebay already makes me nervous mostly because of their scammer friendly policy. I'm sure many of you have experience in selling comics over 10K. Any advice or suggestions from anyone please? Thank You.  PS I can't sell it anywhere on my accounts (Ebay, Comiclink, ect because of the Taxman.)

The waviness of the book from the pics and the pebbling you describe are signs of an improperly pressed book.  The outer edge being that short is also a symptom of a book that was pressed poorly as the buffering board the presser tried to use was either misaligned or wedged too snug and was also too thick or a combination of both.

100 percent! it looks like  a board was inserted in middle during the press , that could also cause the fanning effect. I would bet this book was pressed wrong.

I was told if the cover says the word UK anywhere this is the non US edition and less valuable but I saw this on eBay and this guy is selling for over $1500

Is there variants of this or this is the original 1st print and there is no UK or USA version?

Sometimes on eBay I see issue #361 with no UK 70p

I just want to make sure I am buying the correct edition and not get screwed over. I am not looking for a slab just a TB that is the original.

Is there anyway to tell 2nd prints from just looking at the cover?

The UK in the price box does not make the book  a pence copy, as for UK pence copies being less valuable that should be reversed in the future, they are really the rarest of rare variants! I do not think there is a true pence copy for this issue, most are earlier dates. A lot of people are jumping on the newsstand variants and some are very rare depends on the distribution time periods. These boards are full of facts on both of these topics.
