  1. Saaf and especially Sekowsky were good artists, better than the person responsible for the Avon story above, and I will admit to taking more time when verifying Toth vs either of them. At this point I'm pretty familiar with the Standard output and have notes from Vadebonceur regarding which isssues/stories Toth worked on. I first thought Sekowsky when I saw that splash, Adam. No way?
  2. Aargh, if you go back tomorrow see if you can get some deals on those Brundage WT's (if in solid shape and the paper is decent) and !! Sorry, Steve. I didn't go back...
  3. I attended the Windy City pulp show today and I saw dozens of bedsheets. I saw multiple copies of all the cool Brundage WTs and just about any pulp you wanted to see. The crowd was old white guys. I fit right in. It was a lot of fun though and I ran into many old friends: Bob and Phyllis Weinberg, Ray Walsh, John Cosgriff, Terry O'Neill, Jamie Graham, George Hagenauer and Gary Gianni. Gary's Prince Valiant book is wonderful! He did a fantastic sketch on the title page for me. I also met David Saunders who signed a copy of his book on his dad. He also had the Ward book there. We chatted about his dad and his labors of love. He said the price of the book barely covers the printing costs. He went on to say that he's not much of a businessman, but he's not in it for the money. Real nice guy.
  4. How the heck is that a 9.4, Mark? Wow, Gaines bump for sure!
  5. I've never seen this Michael. Who published them and when?
  6. No. They don't do that with any COAs. Well, in the case of the Gaines' books, they were ranked 1 through 12 and it would be interesting to see how the CGC grades compared. I owned the #2 Piracy set and then upgraded to #1 when it became available... Sold them many years back. Some of the #1 Piracy copies were not the highest after being CGC graded. clink had the set (ungraded) and when I inquired about the price it was way too much for what I knew the variance in grades was likely to be. If I remember correctly, there were two issues in the second-best set that were nicer than the best set. I even considered switching the certificates!

  8. Does CGC encapsulate the original COA with the comic?
  9. Ordered (thnx). I've known Bob for 25 years (we were partners in the Chicago Comicon). I've had the great good fortune of seeing his pulp and art collections. Simply magnificent!
  10. Not a huge Boris Vallejo fan, but that is a classic cover! I agree. One of his best.
  11. (thumbs u I had the good fortune of seeing Gary at C2E2. I've known him for years and actually bought his collection of Silver Age books when he needed some dough!
  12. More original Windy Citys. Can you believe that I had all these books in my home for nearly a year - counting every page while grading each book - before the owner decided to sell them to me. I felt a connection to them that's hard to explain.
  13. I'm sure the same as all of them...a pretty cool cover and the stories are so-so. It was the nicest copy I've ever seen slabbed or raw. My notes state: FINE. Dings at top and bottom of spine (not from handling but from the printing process); slight shadow on cover (along open edge); interior browning (normal C/OW Windy City page quality). I graded all the Windy City's very strictly. By today's standards I believe the book is a 7.5 or maybe even an 8.0. I wish I knew who owned it. There are two 6.5 copies in the census (highest graded), so it's possible that one of those is the WC, but I'd be surprised. The cover was bright and glossy and flat with no creases or problems.
  14. Not sure if I posted this photo when this thread first started. Just part of what I discovered the day I walked into room where I first saw the Windy City collection...
  15. Are you suggesting that Action #13 should be worth more than Action #10 since 'Tec #31 is way ahead of 'Tec #35 when it comes to market value. Personally, I feel that Action #13 is still quite a bit undervalued (espcially in the guide) at only 45% in relationship to the guide value for Action #10. Does anybody have a more accurate idea as to what the relative market value should really be between these 2 hard-to-find books? In market assumption, Rick had mention Action 13 is more scarce than Action 10. I sense and Action 13 blue label has a shot at Detective 31 grade by grade. In the time being, worth more than Detective 31 due to the scarcity. Scarcity shmarcity! Tec 31 is infinitely more cool than Action 13 (thumbs u
  16. Here's my copy of the hand-collated special edition (150 copies). It's nearly an inch thick! And another Moskowitz fanzine - New Fandom from 1938. It's a bit washed out, but the images on the cover are all cut and pasted by hand...
  17. (thumbs u I think I can arrange that in the next few days! Yes, I'd love to see all these ashcans posted here!!!! I love ashcans, but all I can afford are the "modern versions"....but i still love them too... Wish I could become part of the "ashcan hierarchy", but that is a serious "one of a kind" group, I will never be able to own some of those beauties. I am green with envy!!!!! OK...make that sick with envy!!!! Anyway!!!! Yes, yes, yes, to the ashcans!!!! For the most part, GA ashcans are expensive, but when you compare them to sales of semi-key GA, they actually fit right in. The most important ashcans are actually very reasonable when you compare them to the big keys.
  18. That's very raccoon-like of you, Bill!
