Where are all the WD defenders?

Haven't seen it sell for this low in a while...

What if actual zombies start popping out of the ground? Would that cause a spike in the WD #1?

 

I'm sure pretty gun control laws would be thrown out the window.

I was just thinking. What if there are people who absolutely love the WD, but then something happens in the show that completely turns them off, so they end up despising everything about WD. Seems like that would have an effect on how the book sells.

Maybe not zombies specifically, but horror movies have been consistently popular since at least the 50s.

 

Popularity is relative. You could say that Disney films have been popular since the 1930s as well, but the fact is that there are periods when they have been more popular and less popular. Same with horror films. I have read scholarly research about this very topic - one paper was done for horror films and another one was done for Disney films. They are papers that discuss the popularity of Picasso and the Beatles in different conditions as well. Fascinating stuff. I think there was even a study done on the zombie craze recently.

 

I had a one on one directed study with a professor at the University I went to and this was precisely what we talked about. My paper ended up talking about how the Walking Dead's popularity was a response to post industrial capitalism/ how popular trends in media have mirrored the culture of the society during that time. It's really interesting, and when you think about the decades individually, the popular comics of the time really mirrored (for the most part) the culture during the time they were initially distributed.

 

So while yes, hopefully the walking dead is done in 10 years, it doesn't mean it won't still have an expanded niche market in the same way the horror comics of the 50s, or horror film posters do from the 30s and 40s.

 

I think people need to realize that every popular trend goes through the initial hot phase and inevitably cools down. Sure it may become trendy later on, but it will cool down for at least a few decades.

That is interesting, isnt it? I saw a documentary called Nightmares in Red, White and Blue. Its about how horror movies reflect american culture and society specific to certain eras. Definitely worth checking out.

I think WD will be popular for a long time, and there will probably always be hardcore WD fans, but I just dont seeing the book maintaining its value, regardless of how long its popularity sustains. Disney and the horror movie genre are not just one entity, but rather an abyss of material. The WD is nothing compared to either one, and is just a single entity that has caught the eyes of American viewers of all types. As time goes on, i predict the amount of those viewers will diminish. People will get bored of watching the same thing over and over again.

I would guess a 9.9 WD black (not to be confused with the virtually worthless white copy) will be worth somewhere between $40k to $50k by this time next year.

I feel bad for the people that pay 10K for a WD1 9.9. Theres just no way that it will maintain that kind of value. People will be taking a huge hit if they spend that much money for it, and its unfortunate that you have these hardcore WD fans who are willing to drop that much money for a book without even consulting expert opinions. I dont know a single professional investor that would recommend WD 1 9.9 for $10K as a good investment piece.

Exactly. If you do a completed listings search, you will see that the WD 9.8's are actually only selling for a little over 2k, nowhere near $2700. I think its actually starting to drop a little.

 

90 Day GPA average is $2286. 6 of the last 9 sales have exceeded that amount and 1 of the 3 that didn't was for $2200.

Yeah, Id say that's a little over 2K.

I just posted a page back the completed GPA sales for May so far.

There are at least 12 waaay over 2K.

And 1 over 3K

And its only the 15th of May.

Perhaps it's better to actually read the thread before spouting completely eroneous facts, as it adds nothing to the discussion and lowers your credibility somewhat.

 

 

 

I did a simple search on ebay and found numerous completed auctions for the 9.8 White Labels and the average is $2,000 to $2300.

You may have seen 12 sell for "waaay" over 2K, but that really isn't the average for this book (as it was only 12 books).

Heres an auction that ended on the 27th of April for $2200.

Now, those were just white label books. The black labels usually sell for more than that. Unfortunately, the sell prices on the BL books are so inconsistent, its kind of hard to pinpoint a standard value for them.

In case you or anyone was interested, here is the email I received from comic book investing guru, Terry Hoknes, in response to my "What should I do with my WD1?" question I had for him.

(He has numerous comic book investing videos on youtube that are worth checking out.)

"Hype for the tv show has peaked, though i love the show. Doug Sulipa, market reporter for Overstreet, figured it has seen its peak and this would be the best time to sell.

In the long future, as long as the tv show and demand for the series is high, the book should be quite valuable like the Ninja Turtles comics.

It is currently one of the most valuable comics of the past 50 years, so its hard to believe that it would keep going up in value as it really is quite high now

Can't predict the future, so no way to know for sure, but my general opinion usually is to NOT invest in newer products as they are more likely to go down before raising again, whereas gold/silver age comics just keep going up.

So if i was going to play it safe i would personally sell it and put the money in an old issue of Action or Detective from the 40's !"

With that said, I really dont see this book rising in value, but rather dropping. I dont see it reaching TMNT status either. Deflation may not happen anytime soon, but give it 10 years, and you will have a book on your hands that you probably paid way to much for. There are a few factors that make this book so valuable right now, but the main factor is the popularity of the tv show. That popularity will most likely fizzle out, leaving the value of the book at it's lowest point.

In case anyone was wondering, i actually did sell the book. I wasnt about to turn down the advice from those investors. I ended up putting the money into some silvers that ive always wanted, but could never afford...until now.

I bought WD 1 back in 2003. I got it graded a few months back and it turned out to be a 9.8. I was a bit hesitant on what to do with it. Should I keep it? Should I sell it? I spoke to a couple different hardcore investors, and they both suggested that I dump the book and put the money in silver books that have stood the test of time. Why did both of them suggest this to me? Their reasoning was that no one is really going to care about WD 10 years from now. I think that's accurate, and the whole zombie boom will die off long before that. Of course there will still be those die hard WD fans, but I don't think that alone will be enough to reserve the value of this book. I also think that the value has already hit it's max potential.

Theres nothing worse than purchasing a high dollar book only to find that it was packaged in an envelope that says "Do Not Bend" and the mailman shoves it in the mailbox. We've all heard of mailmen going "postal". I'm surprised there hasn't been a comic book nerd who went postal on the mailman.
