Those recalled Wolverine books are more common than advertised. I used to pick them up when I came across them, but after 10 or so, I realized they were practically every other issue. It wasn't the rarity I was commenting on, but that they had a good reason to recall it. It's a major title with a crazy racial slur that somehow made it to print without an editor saying "This probably won't fly." The Rai book is being recalled because the perforation lines for the mask cut off the ears. Who cares. I was just using your comment as a springboard to point out that recalled books aren't always as rare as rumored. As you state, the Wolverine book was recalled over a legit reason, yet they're still everywhere. I can't imagine the recalled Rai's being quite as rare either. Comichron has the total #2 numbers at 13,500. Cover B is probably the subscription variant, which is, what, usually like 1/3 of the total? just under half? something along those lines. Cover C is Recalled Mask edition Cover D is 1:10 Cover E is a 1:25 Cover F is the corrected mask (not sure if this factors in to the numbers) Cover G is a second printing (don't think this is part of the numbers) What would the return rate be on the recalleds then? 30%? higher? lower? What is a common rate for this sort of thing? These comics were not returned. The publisher asked for the copies to be destroyed by the comic retailers. (yeah, right.) Comicchron's numbers are based on the total comics ordered, not the extras sent out to retailers to replace the error masks. So, there are going to be way more than 13,500 copies of this comic around. Ah, I see the destroyed. Ya, so probably not a high number, although, don't retailers need to send proof of destruction to get the replacements??? For the total numbers of the "Error Mask Variant", your math is off (or your wording is).

I wouldn't hold your breath on Rai; the overwhelming sentiment on the VF boards is that the recall error was quite abundant in a number of shops. That, and I don't think a lot of people will care....if the VF regulars don't care about this, then few people will. This. The people that should care don't. Hello all. I'm new here but a regular on the Valiant Fans boards. I can't speak for all Valiant collectors, but personally I'd pick up one of the recalled books if I could get it at cover price, but I have no intention of paying any more for it. Some people might, and it if Valiant's fan base grows, there might be higher demand, but I don't see it for now. What about Kindt and/or Crain fans? May have to factor that in. No clue if that is a major factor or not.

Well, it's not like it's a health and safety concern, like a product/food/drug recall, so there wouldn't be any regulations/bans like that. As far as a cease-and-decist type of thing, where the publisher would order it to not be sold, I have no clue. Very nteresting subject. I've definitely bought recalled back issues in the past, and recalled new comics off of the shelf. In many cases, retailers don't even realize the comic has been recalled, or in some cases (when they get a notice from the publisher) may just not care. Would depend on what country/state/province you were in as well, perhaps. Also, depends on monitoring as well. It's not like someone is going around to check if stores are selling them or not. Also, the nature of the recall would probably dictate the lengths the publisher would go to enforce this (ex. a "pages in wrong order" error vs graphic sexual and racist content accidently printed) Any lawyers here?

If the comic has yet to be purchased by someone, then it is "Unsold". Regardless if any of these characters are important, stick around, etc., the comic is still key simply for the fact that it starts the second major phase of the story, is a watershed moment/issue, THE jumping on point for new readers, etc etc etc. This comic is an instant key. Definitely not $150-$225 key though. :o As you mentioned, with a generous supply and the full scope of characters/plot not realized, this shouldn't be skyrocketing just yet. PS. The arbitrage thing is huge, for the simple fact that most stores don't keep up as fast as you guys at the boards do. Especially when the people at the stores aren't even aware of a title, let alone it's value. (I asked some place if they had ANY issues of Manifest Destiny (as in any number), they where like "What's that?". A lot of stores don't even really follow what's being put out, let alone the pricing trends.) The business of most comic book stores GENERALLY is to sell new comics, that's the bread and butter, and hopefully to subscribers at that. Any other sales including merchandise and sale of premium back issues (modern OR older) are generally just gravy on top it. EVEN in a situation where there is a significant stock of older comics, the local market for those comics will be limited by geography unless you happen to me in a MAJOR metropolitan market, which in the US is pretty much New York, maybe Chicago, OR you have a store so big that you buy from everywhere and people come to find you from miles or states away (think Milehigh or Lonestar). So any time spent following newish trends on moderns and coppers, while potentially valuable, may not always be worth the time of the store manager or owner to recognize the trend, assess a new price, find the item, and reprice it in most cases. And even if they do it, sometimes it turns off potential customers. Like if I like to go hunting for cover price 'deals' of moderns, I might also go pick up some other random stuff when I go. But if that place marks up valuable back issues, I'm not going to go hunting at that store, maybe another one that's a little slower in marking up the inventory. Totally agree. Personally, I LOVE it when stores don't follow the trends, really RESPECT those stores who do follow the trends/keep an eye on them from time to time, but are reasonable and keep the prices 50-75% of the possible value, and HATE the stores that gouge/horde/never lower prices/have sales, and generally think that they should price their comics at the highest realized price no matter what (even if that price was a blip, and the actual price is now much lower and there's no demand for the comic). Regarding the time to research and price thing, as Socktopi and other have mentioned, apparently some stores wait for their customers to do that for them.

So you, in effect, did some of the guys work for him, by sorting through the issues, flagging some valuable (you also did the initial research to know what was worth grabbing), inaccurately priced merchandise, and bringing them to him. You should have charged the jerk for your efforts.

I think this is the motivation for most flippers/resellers - its a hobby within the hobby. Some people like the research, chase and thrill of selling as much as they like the research, chase and thrill of collecting. Totally this. I started flipping books because it was fun speculating and chasing down books. Wasn't so much about the money itself, though it is nice to make enough to pay for the books that stay in your collection. +1 Pretty much how I look at it most of the time as well. For me, it was more "Well, I'm picking up a tonne of comics to read anyway, reading the synopsis/solicit for them, coming across boards/info on what's worth somehthing/hot/etc. so why not pick up a few doubles, triples, extras, etc, purely to speculate on. I have the "Insider Info" right in front of me, and I'm at the shop anyway, or putting in an order, so why not? The thing, too, is that if something I'm reading does get valuable, am I really going to want to sell my sole copy of it?

Booyakasha! Initially, the solicit didn't interest me. I don't really go in for sword and sorcery/D & D type comics. Bought a bunch just for the investment (including the Staple variant!) Decided to read the 1st one, and immediately put it on my regular order list. It's pretty well written, pretty humourus, etc. Glad I kept picking up #1's, 2's and 3's when I saw them
