It was insensitive. He did it to grab headlines and it worked.

Exactly! As the saying goes "any publicity is good publicity".

However, my respect of Bill Maher has gone out the window. He will probably lose a lot of fans due to his comment but that's the price he pays. In the long run, nobody will remember Bill Maher, so sad.

Here is a related question.  Every Con I've been to that Stan is doing signing at you can hear the money getting sucked out of the room and deposited into the Stan sig line.  Now that that will not occur again do you think the buying public will spend their money elsewhere while attending Cons or do you think Stan brought in the people and they won't be coming back?

I've been to a bunch of cons where Stan Lee was signing. I remember Rhode Island a couple of years back where people would actually fighting over Stan Lee tickets because his tickets actually "sold out". It was ridiculous. I guess now Conventions can spend more money on other entertainers or entertainment since they no longer have Stan to bring in the crowds.

My belief remains exactly the same as it has been for years - there will be an initial spike which will settle down. And over the long run, the books that will do the best will be books that he actually wrote, with tight, clean, well-placed sigs.  Moderns that he had nothing to do with and poorly placed sloppy sigs will suffer the most. But i still expect them to always operate at a premium to blue label books of the same grade. And I think that even keys that he had nothing to do with (Hulk 181 NM 98 etc.) will remain with a significant bump over blue or non-Stan SS.

Totally agree! I was monitoring eBay just to see what was happening and as predicted, there was a huge spike in sales such as posting books and buying books that were signed by Stan.

It was quit disheartening but it has been a trend with writers and artists that are passing away as of late.

I think the spike will plateau after a while (give it 6 months or so) but as stated, Stan signed books are going to cost more now.  The bad sigs (from the last few signings) will hopefully go away, as those will be sold first and then non-keys and then keys that are a higher price will eventually be the last ones left.

At least he is in a better place now and all the bad stuff and bad press that has come up lately, he won't have to deal with anymore.

This is not my book.  I just saw it and it has a long while since I messed with SS so thought something had changed on unwitnessed cover sigs.

Gotcha. Well, I don't believe that this book has the correct holder and/or in the right category. Unless something has changed that I am not aware of. Hopefully someone with more knowledge or a CGC employee can comment. But as it is not your book, I guess whosever book this is, got a book with a rare mistake.

I wonder why CGC decided not to notate this issue with "1st appearance of Venom in cameo" instead opting to go with just "Venom cameo" on the label?

Hmm... a discussion to get some people talking and maybe CGC will eventually change it?

I mean, Incredible Hulk #180 states "1st appearance of Wolverine in cameo on last page"

not as popular as a character? (which is a good debate as well)

So I recently acquired a new collection and ran across this little thing. I had never seen it before. Could this be the first appearance of NIGHTWING?

I am going to go with a hard "no" only because this looks like a sampling of stories going on in the DC universe  (New Teen Titans w/ Nightwing, Batman: Year One, Maxwell Lord Justice League, etc) and plus Wikipedia says Tales of the Teen Titans #44 is his first appearance :nyah:

But anywho, i think this was published in 1989 (if my search of the book is correct)

Nobody ever considered the impact that the inclusion of various oddly shaped, hard edged items..like cards...or the heat seal of the bag itself.

Fast forward 20 years, and all of these books...literally every book published with a manufactured bag and heat seal...have been damaged by the uneven pressure exerted by that seal over the ensuing decades. The only salvation for those books in ultra high grade was the people who opened those bags, carefully took the comics inside out, and stored them properly. Those didn't have time to develop the problems that the "still in the original plastic, mint condition!!" copies have today, that have to be, at a minimum, pressed to remove those indentations...if they can be, and if the heat seal wasn't set a bit too high, to take off some of the ink of the cover below it.

Oh yeah, I remember those days. It was so exciting to take a book out of the plastic and ACTUALLY see what it looked it (if it wasn't spoiled already).

So, my question on this topic is every copy of a book that is "still in the original plastic, mint condition!!" technically damaged goods and not mint condition?  And are the people that buy old bagged comics not getting any book that is mint condition? (asking for a friend).

    Thanks for the nostalgic topic!

I would say MTG and videogames hobbies are both going to start to take off on a similar path like comic books and sports cards did the 1980s and 1990s because the kids/young people who bought them back than now have come of age as adults and can now spend some huge coin on them because they now are at the age of having disposable income.

I would definitely say Alpha, Beta, Unlimited are the best cards/sets to have at this point. Arabian Nights, Antiquities and Revised come in second (or 4th,5th,6th) best cards/sets to have. I definitely think the cards are only going to rise in value as new sets are produced and the game is everywhere now.

I used to play back in the day when Revised had just come out but never thought of it as a collector's hobby, just a game. That's not to say I don't have some valuable cards now and have a good collection of cards now. Now's its more of a collectors hobby for me and barely play the game.

Anyways, here is a link to a good documentary on Magic Cards and the top card of them all: Black Lotus

  10. New the Comic Art Gallery pages but wanted to share my first artwork as it is a piece from Legendary artist Jeremy Dale, R.I.P. This is fitting to put this up as I first met him at Baltimore Con and he was one of the most humble and inspiring artists/creators I have met. I ran into his wife selling his work at Heroes Con this year and had talked to her about her husband, his work and she was more than glad to have these pieces sold to someone that adored her late husband's work. If you get chance to run into Kelly Dale, please take the time to talk to her.  Anyways, here's the artwork from SKYWARD (Action Labs), enjoy!
