Do many modern con attendees really bring large rolls of cash (e.g., > $1000) with them to Big City conventions?  Do many (all?) dealers prefer cash transactions?  Has anyone ever seen a customer (i.e., not another dealer) hand over, say, $5000 - $50,000 in cash at a convention for a major purchase?

Plus, I hear that the young folk are all about the convenience of their mobile banking apps, debit cards, etc., these days.

When damn near everyone (except me) has a smart phone, and when money can be zapped into a bank account securely and instantaneously (and not held in non-theft-proof pockets, zippered money bags, or cash boxes), what's the downside?

Usurious fees?  Unreliable connections at shows?  Unwanted electronic "paper trails"?  Buyer protections afforded to credit card users?

Buyers are clearly shouldering more risk in cash-only transactions.  Is that the appeal?  You pays your $$ and takes yer chances (i.e., that the discount will outweigh the potential for undetected restoration, etc.)?

I guess I've become too much of an old f@rt: got no appetite for the hustle and flow, nor any desire to fumble around with a big wad of bills to get an extra 10% off.

Then again, I haven't been to a comic book show, large or small, in nearly three years, and have no plans to attend any in the future.  So who cares what I think? :screwy:

Many dealers now deal with CCs and the like but I doubt they would hesitate if someone rolled out a wade of cash.

I know I wouldn't feel comfortable having more than $1,000 on me and walking around a con or anywhere. That's what having a CC is for.

Not sure what people have done if they really need more than $1,000 for a purchase and it had to be straight cash.

Maybe meet the dealer at their hotel or a dark alley

The absolute worst thing for me would be for @Rich_Henn to come in here and offer up some deal on the Jock cover like he did with Action Comics #1000.  "Minimum 5 sigs signed in silver with Tom King and whichever artists I can get."  Like, how am I supposed to say no at the opportunity for matching books and awesome sigs?  I'm already broke!  :roflmao:

Rich Henn...singlehandedly deferring my retirement age.

    HAHAHA, you know it's coming...

If you have a CGC Universal graded TMNT #1 that has comments "Kevin Eastman" and "Peter Laird" written on interior cover in pen, would it be worth it to send to PGX to have them authenticate the autographs and convert it to a PGX Signature Series book?

    sample.png

So getting back to the question at hand...I am going to go with "NO".

For a couple of reasons, I believe the company has lower standards of grading than others, so your book will more than likely (no promises) come back with a higher overall grade. However, you are looking at a lower quality of grading standards, so this will lead to the value of the book being lower (if you were ever want to sell it or trade it).

I would advice to google and find out for yourself the reputation of PGX, and other companies, if you really don't want to keep the CGC Universal Grade "Blue Label".

    Good luck!

For the most part, none of the Action Comics #1000 covers struck me.  Same with the Amazing Spider-Man #800's.  But I am loving a lot of these Batman #50 covers.  I'll be getting the Janin (standard cover), the Jim Lee variant, and that absolutely stunning Natali Sanders cover.  I actually like the Warren Louw cover because I like the history around the edges but we'll see if I'm up for spending the extra money on it.

Agree as well. Thankfully the Action #1000 variant(s) that i wanted were by my LCS (Kaare Andrews Third Eye Comics variant) , Curt Swan and the Jock variant.

Here is the link to the Jock variant for Batman #50.

    Batman #50

I actually like most of the Batman #50 variants except for ones that are pretty generic. Mainly having Catwoman and Batman together is enticing me, especially in the wedding dress

  5. I blame Orioles fans for seeing the museum every time they go to a game and probably not once going in!

    >:(

But in reality, I think the location was never a good fit and the marketing of GEM. I have never taken a trip myself but now I really want to before it closes. It's sad but at least it will have some notice being at the Library of Congress. This way someone doesn't really have to keep up with the pricing of having the items on display but unfortunately now the government has control of it.

  6. The first scenario you presented seems unlikely but never say never. It takes a lot to crack a slap, take the book out of the sleeve and then resend it to get slabbed (probably not worth the trouble just to get you on not sending the correct book). I've been buying and selling on eBay for long while now and only had one situation that caused me trouble. Thankfully the situation was handled easily since I insure and put signature confirmation on my high priced items for sale. This will definitely keep you safe and piece of mind when it comes to scammers.

The one situation I had was a high priced CGC SS book sent and the buyer sent pictures of the slab having very minor cracks and wanted a total refund. Thankfully I recent my previous pics of what the item looked like before shipping and also the insured confirmation with details to contact the insurer. I never heard from the buyer again, so I am assuming it was resolved.

As mentioned, other 3rd party sites are good: Commic Link, MyComicShop, etc.

I hope this thread doesn't deter people from selling or buying books on eBay

  7. So just want to go on a rant that Marvel's paper quality is going down the tube.

I just picked up Amazing Spider-Man #800 and WOW did it take me forever to find a good copy (9.8 quality) of just one of the variants!

I know this has been an issue, especially with their MCU books (with the black covers) but I never thought it would affect an important/fundamental issue like ASM #800! Their blank covers have the best card stock cover out of any variant!

I really think this will affect the number of high grade books that we see in Marvel Comic's future if this keeps up!

How can this be fixed (if at all)?

Very similar to the situation with Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 being repeatedly referenced (by sellers to unsuspecting buyers) as "first black costume". rantrant

I think most notes on CGC labels state "Origin of the alien symbiote that eventually becomes Venom" ...thankfully. But yeah, most sellers usually put "1st appearance of Black Costume" in their heading, when it technically is NOT! :ohnoez:

Sticking to the thread, is there a way for your 9.8 to have it annotated like your 9.4 to read " 1st appearance of 'Aliens' in comics"?

Well I had talked to them with no trouble through Facebook, then I sent a post on May 8th and it shows they read it but I got no answer.  I then sent another message... it shows they read it, but no answer.  I've sent 4 messages since May 8th and got no answer.  To be honest, after Torpedo comics canceled mail-ins for Frank Miller, I think the facilitator is ignoring me because they know it has screwed things up for me.  It's poor business how Torpedo handled the whole situation.  I've now got a Daredevil #183 signed by Conway, that I can't get signed by Miller... and 4 more #183 and a #184 I bought that I can't get signed.

Agree with @Kevlar (who is definitely a good facilitator) Do you have another way to contact the facilitator? (i.e. phone, txt messaging, email?)

I agree Facebook Messaging is not my cup of tea for contacting people, facilitators or anyone else. Just because it shows that someone has "seen" the message doesn't really mean they have thought about the message and are ready to reply. Facilitators are busy and they may want to answer your question appropriately.

Also, I do know that Miller will be at other signings, so not sure why they couldn't get him at another show?

If things don't get any better you may want to look at another facilitator...

(hopefully the facilitator sees this post and gets back to you soon!)

Byrne announced on his forum he's only signing Star Trek books unless he has enough downtime to set up on his own. He also said the limit is 10 books per family per day.

Let's hope there is A LOT of downtime....or just tell everyone not to bring any Star Trek stuff so the only thing he can sign is other books such as Uncanny X-Men, etc
