  1. If it’s not a 9.8 they’ve got some explaining to do… a 9.6 newsstand has never sold for over 5k according to GPA data. Record was in April of 2021 for $4,750. GPA doesn’t have any recent 9.8 newsstand sales, the last one to sell sold in December for $9,750, but most books (including the non-newsstand version of 300) have dropped quite a bit since then, so maybe they’re doing some extrapolating.

Here are Session 1A and 1B results from the June ComicLink Focused Auction.   As with last auction - also included a % change look between last, 90, and 12.    I will not be doing this recap for the July auction if anyone cares.

So much red. Also anecdotally the 3rd session that begun tonight on CL for late bronze/copper/modern I was seeing a lot of yearly lows on books. They just have so many of these slabs, multiple copies of all of these minor keys even within same grade. A lot of these sell for more everyday on eBay, the buyers just aren’t there on CL for this kind of volume anymore, particularly for the more modern stuff.

Update on my post: just came back to check and saw that my two copies of Star Wars #1 that I decided to send in at the last minute for Roy Thomas remarques now say SFG, so they may be waiting for all four books to be done and send it all back together.

That would make sense. I have something similar. Sent a 5 book sub in for Claremont signing when that was announced with Terry Austin. Then asked them to add a couple sigs on part of the submission for Wolverine 50th. They accommodated and I paid the difference and they mentioned they’d all be shipped back together, even the ones that just had Claremont’s sig then I submitted a couple more books separately, so I have an additional sub too. In any case my original sub has been SFG for some time now, my later sub has been GEI the past week. All books also had to go thru CCS.

In total I have 4 copies of Wolverine 1 (limited series) with multi sigs, and then just Claremont on 2 copies of X-Men 266 and 1 X-Men 94. Patiently waiting…

All of this changes though if you have money, a deep enough grudge, and available time to use the courts; most of us do not have all three of these though.

Judging by the $ amount these books in “humble cow” consignment list are going for I’d say they likely have the money. And based on how much they stand to lose got to imagine a grudge. Hopefully they have the time to go after him in court.

OK. It looks like many of these books were graded together at CGC. The Tec 29 (cert # 4401912002) was graded on 3/22/24. The same day that @Winsomesixsquid's AF15 was graded (cert # 4401912003). My AF15 (cert # 4411098010) was graded on the same day as the other restored AF15 (cert # 4411098012) that "humble cow" is consigning through MCS. Makes it very hard to believe that "Humble Cow" doesn't know the provenance of these books and likely points to many of them being stolen.

These are 2 separate submissions the first is a 3 book sub the other is an 18 book submission. But yeah, many of the books from these 2 subs are listed by humble cow in MCS.

In addition to what you mentioned from the first sub 4401812001 is also on sale:IMG_3093.thumb.jpeg.61b001baaa94d128dd96751756b52b44.jpeg

For the second sub in addition to what you provided with the AF15’s from the same sub the seller also has listed most of the other books which include several individually slabbed pages from a Batman 1 such as 4411098008:

    IMG_3094.thumb.jpeg.fa2d0d473280e0428edd72719502140e.jpeg

I know someone mentioned the interiors of another GA bat book being different upon return… not sure if anyone is missing the interiors on a Batman 1 but there’s quite a few pages that look like they might have been subbed to be “sold for parts” from a Batman 1.

Invincible 9… all time high was $500, and this auction (not mine) has blown past that with 2 days left.

Guess people really enjoyed Season 2.

This one finished at $1213… I double checked GPA, last sale (also high) was in April for $500. I know these print runs were small, and the back cover being all black makes 9.8’s harder to get but this is still quite remarkable to see.

  7. It honestly sounds like you’ve been buying 9.0’s-9.4’s and are hoping for 9.6’s-9.8’s which is fine, I’ve done my share of wishful thinking on 9.0’s and 9.2’s but you do sort of get what you pay for most of the time.

If you’re asking if 9.6’s and 9.8’s exist both slabbed and raw of this book the answer is yes. Many many many times over. This isn’t some rare golden age book that comes to market once a decade. If you have the funds you can probably click and buy a dozen perfect copies today online. Just comes down to what you’re willing to pay.

Did you guys who have gotten books back already get them pressed? All of the books I submitted that I'm having pressed are still "Received at CCS."

I have 2 batches for this signing (separate submissions) both went to CCS but both have moved out of the CCS phase though. One is SFG the other is GEI. The one that’s now GEI didn’t make it out of Received at CCS until 6/12.

So I don’t have either back but both are further than yours even with CCS added.

I also had mistakes on mine - I posted yesterday (see attached) they sent me labels confirming three signatories when there were six signatories - I will be reaching out to them via the usual email.  signatureseries@cgccomics.com
Is that the best way?  Or did you call them.

I also loothe to send these comics by post and risk getting it lost in the post unless I pay a lot for registered post.  What did you do?

I mentioned this in the other thread you mentioned this, but I looked up your scan (above) and see there is no mistake, you just have to flip the book over, the other names are on the other side of the book. They can’t fit them all on the front with the custom label so they list the additional ones on the back cover.

Just received the signed slabs signed by: FM, CC, JR, GOM, TO and RT however the slab only mentioned CC, FM and GOM (and omits mentioning JR, TO and RT even though their signature is clearly there) see photo.

Any advice on what to do?  Sending back would cost more money?  BUT i have already paid $290 per slab (for all six signatures) and postage - seems expensive for me to resend them back (not sure who to write to even).

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    THanks Paul

You’re sure it’s not on the back label? Usually with books with many sigs (too many to list on the front label with a custom label) they put the additional ones on the back.

I'm rather stunned that if the raw sells for $200 there is only graded.  Seems to me that would be one that should have more slabs.

My first thought as well. Since we’re not being given more info about the book my guess is it’s some hot variant cover of a book that just came out a few weeks ago and someone fast tracked a copy that was graded a 9.8, and more will come but right now the market is primarily raw.

But if I’m wrong and you’re going to tell me this book is more than a few years old and went thru the covid boom when any book worth even $50 in a 9.8 was being sent by everyone and their grandma to CGC is sitting in the census with only 1 copy when a raw sells for $200 currently, well, I am genuinely curious what unicorn OP is holding.

  13. Hard to compare comic books to any other printed material really. Main reason is what you identified “interest in holding a book, magazine or newspaper in your hands” doesn’t quite apply to many comic books purchased. What percent of books purchased do you think are put in a bag and board or slab and never actually thumbed thru? Whereas if you’re buying a novel, the odds are pretty high you’re going to read it and not just have it as part of a “collection” or “display piece” like with comics. So you have those buyers AND people who simply prefer to read on paper vs. digital that are going to keep the market there.

“For 15 years, all the way from 2009 through February 2024, CGC graded over 27,000 total copies of Sports Illustrated and NEVER, not even once, gave out any grade higher than 9.8.”

Quote is from Goldin listing. I’m not as familiar with the magazine side of things but this seems even more rare than the modern comic 9.9’s if that line from Goldin is accurate.

You say that as if semantics aren't important. They are, especially in the context of what we're discussing here, which is what is in that statement by CGC and how more 9.9/10s changes it. I'm saying that statement as written has not changed even if CGC will now give out 9.9/10s more often. Of every 10 uber high grade books graded, not just moderns but all eras since moderns aren't the only books being graded, I'm betting that on average no more than 2 will grade out 9.9/10 and the other 8 will still be 9.8. That is in line with the statement that "9.8 is typically the best grade you can get". I actually think the percentage will be much lower but I do concede that it could be 20% on moderns. On bronze and below, where I believe that even with this change, it will be less than 1% that get above a 9.8, 9.8 will most definitely be the highest grade you can typically expect.

Semantics aren’t really important, not to the point I was getting at. It’s pretty clear the implication of that article was that 9.8 was the highest grade one should ever expect, and detailed how to look for 9.8 copies in your collection because pretty much since CGC’s inception it’s been well known by collectors that a 9.8 was the top and that 9.9 and 10.0 were magical unicorns most of us would never see on a non-cardstock submission. That article doesn’t get written that way in an era where 20% of moderns (by your estimate) are hitting 9.9. And definitely doesn’t get written that way in an era where there is a 9.9 prescreen. If you believe it still does, because of “semantics” making it still technically a true statement I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.

If you think 9.9/10s will be awarded "in most cases or usually"... let's just say you're expectations are unrealistic

If you want to debate semantics that’s on you. But my guess is that at some point in the future they will become as typical as 9.8’s are today especially if they roll out the 9.9 pre screen. There’s really no reason why they shouldn’t already have been, particularly in the case of moderns, except that CGC was artificially capping the market at 9.8. Which whether you liked that or not it was at the very least consistent year over year.

  17. On 6/5/2024 at 12:17 PM, LordRahl said:

Nothing has changed from that statement. 9.8 is STILL the best grade you can TYPICALLY expect. Given that the percentage of 9.9/10 is still going to be in the low single digits, 9.9/10 is still going to be "rare".

Like I said, until they roll out the 9.9 prescreen. Which, nobody is sending books they don’t expect to TYPICALLY get a 9.9 to a 9.9 prescreen so either the 9.9’s will become typical or CGC is going to launch some unicorn lottery game to get a 9.9 via prescreen. And with the increase in the numbers posted in this thread already I think we have our answer - 9.9’s are already becoming more typical than they were a year ago when they made that article.
