  1. I own exactly one book featuring the Legion...but it is a nice one!
  2. After enjoying the Superboy thread, I dug up this one. Jaw dropped on the above! ?
  3. It may have actually been pre-CGC, I just can't remember....
  4. No big story...picked it up for $100 at a small NJ show about a dozen years ago from a guy who had several similar copies. I could only afford one. Don't really remember any more details, except that other dealers there assured me that he and the books were legit.
  5. Not a great photo, but I'm very fond of this raw copy of Spidey 42...not much wrong with it!
  6. I don't know if others agree, but I think SCS damage during shipping was much more common early on. I had many bad experiences from 2000-2004, and I haven't had a problem with SCS for years now. So for that reason I'm a little squeamish about buying old label slabs now.
  7. Lol, you were probably funding all of those X-Men 137s.....
  8. Vintage Investment Associates..Ewert et al... I really only cry over All Winners 13...it was so perfect... ?
  9. I got back into collecting in 1992 after about 8 years of inactivity. I am a child of the Bronze Age, but for reasons I can't really recall now I quickly became consumed with Timelys. I've always been a perfectionist condition nut, so for about 6 years I bought the nicest ones I could find, mostly Caps, but I also had several D copies including All Winners 13 and Marvel Mystery 74. I was in grad school at the time, living in a closet paying $125 a month in rent and scraping together $400 for my next Timely fix. Around 1998, again for reasons I can't really recall, I decided to get out of GA and focus on the bronze DCs that were really my first love. I sold everything, probably eking out a small profit. To this day it sticks in my craw, not only that I sold out, but that I did it a year before CGC. All Winners 13 D copy, at least 9.4,/9.6 sold for $400. Ugh. And worst of all, I sold to VIA!
  10. Going through my closet today and found this. Oakland copy, purchased from Metropolis in 1999 for $50. Oh for those pre-CGC bargains!
  11. I've had good success using postimage.
  12. Books housed as described above are stored in small stacks, by the way. Upright wouldn't work for obvious reasons.
  13. For my nicest raw books, I put a magazine sized full back in a magazine sized Mylar. I then put the book upside down in a silver age sized Mylar and slide that into the mag mylar, so nothing is open at the top. Presents nicely.
  14. Even though I only collect Bronze Age, I'm really enjoying looking at these beautiful books!
  15. ...in a CGC case, or in a Mylar with white backing board? I have to constantly fight the urge to crack out graded comics because I love the way they look with a white backing board behind them. It just seems to make the colors look nicer and brighter.
  16. Finally picked up a nice copy of a personal grail from a fellow boardie!
  17. Thanks to Wormboy for hooking me up with this fantastic copy of Supes 233! I've been looking for a nice copy of this book for five years. This is a very strong 9.4 and Tim gave me a great deal on it!
  18. I enjoyed Gerber's work a lot when I was in high school. Interestingly, I find that what drives my collecting interest now is more what I was into as a 7-12 year old than what I enjoyed later.
  19. Deal of the week! Both of these are fresh as a daisy and look like 9.8s, $35 a pop!
  20. Thanks prof! When I bought it I viewed it as a likely 9.2 due to the three small visible spine tics...however I have seen 9.4s with much more noticeable spine wear in the last five years, so who knows? I will probably only submit it if I plan to sell.
  21. Me as a teenager shamelessly aping Bill Sienkiewicz....
  22. Great journal and congratulations on the acquisition! I've always been very happy with the eye appeal, wrap and color saturation on my raw copy. Picked it up for under $1000 in 2000.
