  1. Those "questions" were rhetoric commentary, so... Obviously you didn't understand the OP - leading to the tangential unrelated question. That conjecture of "edge" is exactly why I inferred your implied "edge". It was a simple, honest question that you got defensive about. The question was asked because I was going to frame my answer based on your answer. You did reply with a so I didn't infer anything. But no worries. You seem to like arguing for the sake of arguing so you can have the win. So you're saying that eventually everything comes to an end. Thank you Captain Obvious.
  2. Asking if I am "new to comics" would be the tangent, sir/ma'am. It's irrelevant. That simple, non-invasive question was asked because you were asking obvious questions about a market that has been acting this way for the last 20 years. Nope. But you do seem to have an edge in many of your replies. Yup. But people have been saying the same thing for decades.
  3. For sure. That's retail 101. You're there to service the customer. But not all hobbyists turned retailers are business people.
  4. Social interactions are a very complicated thing because we're all so different. What one person considers offensive or prohibitive the next person may not think twice about or care about. This post is about no specific person. I know that some buyers have NO problem trying to whittle your price down to as close to wholesale as possible. They think nothing of it. Others are happy to pay a fair market value and look for little discount but nothing huge. Just something to make them feel like they are being treated fairly. Some don't like negotiating AT ALL. Zip. Zero. None. They just either take it or leave it. The problem is that if a book is priced at Fair Market Value, you STILL get a large percentage of customers who hammer away at the price, no matter what the sticker says. Even it it's below market. But if you build in a cushion for those customers, you are scaring away the guy who doesn't want to negotiate at all. You haven't done anything wrong and yet have eliminated a percentage of your customer base just because you are trying to appeal to everyone. Retail is a thankless job and no matter what you do, someone will believe that their common sensibilities have been stepped on. So each retailer just does what they can do and deal with the problems as they arise.
  5. That was going to be my next post. In this day of everyone checking GPA on a phone, online prices are the next best thing.
  6. Isn't this the Mother F-ing truth. My favorite is when dealers roll their eyes and have to get up out of that chair to hand me a book that I can't read the price tag on from afar BECAUSE IF I COULD YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO GET UP OUT OF YOUR CHAIR. The crux of this particular discussion is that you just can't please everyone. Some customers want to be able to see the price from the aisle. Others only want to see the book, so a large price tag obscures their view of the book. Some customers (like the Brits - I know them well) don't want to inconvenience you, others feel it's your job to hand them as many books as they ask for with no qualms about asking. Some dealers have huge price tags on the front. Some back them on the back. Some carry a printed price list. Some dealer price books AFTER you look at them. You just can't please everyone.
  7. And you into mine. Multiple times. You went off on a tangent first when I asked you 'Are you new to comics?' All you had to do was say yes or no. Instead, you got your back up, took it as an insult and here we are. Anyway, I think you've gotten a lot of good information to your question. The answer always boils down to 'collect what you like and what you can afford' and that is going to vary for everyone with no wrong answers.
  8. Everyone has a preference as to where they want the signature, but I believe in this case they signed their names over the characters they are associated with.
  9. +1 This is actually so very true, as evident from the many board discussions here in the past talking about resubs that have come back with different grades. You guys make it sound like it's a total crapshoot and they're just throwing darts but that's not the case. There is some variance in a minority of submissions where either in-betweeners could go between two grades or something changes about the book between submissions but as a general rule books don't bounce between 3 different grades as the norm.
  10. But you're reading into my intentions (incorrectly, may I add). I simply asked if you were new to comics with no other qualifiers, teasing or anything else so you immediately went on the defensive. Anyway, my intent was to ask you how long you've been in comics but you've gotten your back up about it so there's not much point in further discussion. No big deal.
  11. So, not knowing ANYTHING about you I'm not allowed to ask if you're new to comics? I think you're being a little over sensitive. You started a thread that opens a conversation and I contributed. The SA market has been selling books in the NM rnage in multiples since CGC opened it's doors. As a general rule, 0.2 increment between 9.0 - 9.8 has meant double in price for as long as I've been back in comics. About 2002 IIRC. You seem to a lot. Yup. And yet it hasn't happened. Guess we'll see.
  12. The search function on this forum is not the best. Does this forum eliminate old threads? There are many things I can't seem to find even though I'm pretty sure they haven't been removed or erased.
  13. OK, so change the car analogy to a house. No need to get snarky. You also could have read a zillion threads on the same subject on this chat forum over the last 15 years but chose not to. I'll admit, I was lazy and didn't feel like reading 7 pages. That's why I asked if you were new to comics but I guess now I have my answer. Anyway, no big deal. Have fun collecting!
  14. Why would you buy an $80K car when you can get a $40K car? Why would you buy a $40K car when you can get a $20K car? Why would you buy a $20K car when you get get an $8K car? Why would you buy an $8K car when you can get a $4K car? Why would you buy a $4K car when you can get a $1K car? When do you want to stop? It's been like that forever. People pay multiples for better copies. And as long as the certified market has been established, paying double for the next grade has been the norm. Are you new to comics? People were paying multiples of Guide for raw copies well before certification became established. The multiple depended on how nice a book was, how desirable it was and how important it was. If you didn't pay the multiple, you didn't get the nice book. So I'm missing what's different about this market?
