  1. Two excellant points. I'd add that paper and ink quality has changed since then and Marvel's choice of paper and ink in the early 60's is the main reason that they are hard to find in high grade. Marvel chipping, smudging, cracking inks, etc.
  2. It's part of what helps me understand how CGC grades books and helps my learning process along. If anything, I'd say it's very useful information. Just so you know, No printing company can "add gloss" doesn't matter if it's postcards or comics, no such thing as "adding gloss" You can always call CGC and talk to a grader to understand what they are looking for. I just read back several pages and didn't see anyone say they added gloss. So I'll just accept your apology instead.
  3. I slabbed that copy and that book was exceptional in hand, It looked like a 9.2. Someone got a killer copy. Hopefully it went to a good home.
  4. I don't know if the actual intent was much Lee/Kirby trying to establish plainclothes heroes as much as the transition was still happening from monster and Sci-Fi era to costumed heroes and they hadn't gotten there yet. The ordinary problems for sure, but once the costumed hero appeared nothing else compared. That's probably the main reason why Fury and Westerns didn't flourish the way Spidey etc. did. But I will agree with you that any $0.10 and circle $0.12 Marvel is about as cool as it gets for collecting.

  6. Well, I thought this was going to be kind of cool to see. Guess it may not happen.
  7. Only slightly correct, when customers switch printing plants (usually cause they got a better price) the new plant will want to impress the new customer with a higher quality product so they'll beef up the color to make a good impression. all that is true, but the visual difference has less to do with any extra efforts with inks or printing quality assurance than to the paper stock used on the covers that changed. The new paper handled gloss better. Hold a Captain Marvel against any earlier 60s Marvel and the difference is clear. I think that once Marvel came out of their restrictive 11 books a month restriction imposed in the late fifties when they moved to DCs distributor, (I forget what exactly happened there) and they started adding vigorously to their list of titles, they made a better deal with the new printer to handle the load and get a better deal with their new clout in the industry. Yup. 1950's and early DC's were very different than Marvels from the same era. It's possible that the DC paper didn't age as gracefully as Marvels (I think White page Marvels from 1962 in particular are not uncommon) but white page DCs seem to be tougher. But the DC paper stock seemed much stronger than Marvel's 'newsprint' interiors and thin cover stock. Marvel inks also seemed inferior during this era. I think the above reasons are why Marvels and DC's from the same era are graded slightly differently. At the end of the day, it's all useless information. If you say so. I'll disagree.
  8. It's a quality control error. The wrong color label was used. That book is trimmed.
  9. If Jessica Biel wore an outfit made of balloons would that be good or bad?
  10. Mods notified greggy and I have a veto vote on who gets banned. You're next on the list.
  11. It's so sad. Louise's work is related to medical underwriting and statistics. According to her, statistically, men with Latin genes have a much greater chance of heart attack or stroke at a young age. I can't remember the numbers but when she explained them to me they were staggering. I'm not sure whether Darren fell into this statistic but with a name like Carrara it is possible. If you're of Latin descent it might be worth staying on top of something like this with your family doctor.
  12. It's just as important as any other key from the 1930's. The problem is the way the market has come to value books, if it wasn't sold on a newsstand or doesn't have a movie deal in the works for a half dozen films it's no longer as important. But historically speaking, it's a monster book. Couple that with the fact that it's truly rare, I mean not just 'scarce' on paper but extremely rare due to only 10 copies existing and to me it's a must have for a collector of rare books IMO.
  13. And moderators were notified but nothing has been done. They must be busy moderating all the political posts.
  14. I'm not. I'm in Canada but I've dealt with Darren over the years and from the conversations we exchanged via internet I just thought he came across as a good guy and it was worth mentioning.
  15. I'd only dealt with him a few times but he seemed to be a decent human being. I think he's roughly my age and has passed as of Nov 25 unexpectedly by heart attack. Funeral plans are as follows (as per Facebook) RIP Hello everyone, we are so sorry the shop has been closed. On November 25th the owner of the shop and friend to us all Darren passed away from an unexpected heart attack. He is gone way too soon and we are all in mourning. Services will be at Tunison Funeral Home 105 Lake Ave Saratoga Springs. Calling hours for the services will be 5pm to 9pm on December 2nd. We encourage you to stop in and pay your respects any way you feel comfortable. Feel free to bring your comic spirit. Hero costumes are welcome if that's what makes you comfortable. Darren would have wanted us to celebrate his life not mourn his death. Thank you all for your kind comments
  16. Guess Comic Connect was in a hurry and usually just upload 2 pics max of their auction comics? Here is a sample of craft tint used on Marvel #2 compared to a regular black and white original art page from a later Marvel Mystery: I prefer the black and white.
  17. It's a fascinating read if you don't know about the book. There are only 9 or 10 (possibly 11 copies) in existence (I forget exactly how many). They were found and their history is still a mystery as nobody has been able to fully explain what they are. Here's a thread with a lot of discussion about MPFW #1
  18. "Insisting" which was the language used does imply that the transaction was some what tense when hither to for there was no one insisting that he as the seller should invoice them instead of them preparing their own goods and services Paypal payment. That's why he posted, to gain some clarity. So my statement stands. Transactions are not as smooth as they used to be no matter how small the hiccup. There are an immense amount of transactions conducted here without a hitch. The majority of Boardies (certainly the ones I've dealt with) are fantastic to work with, both from a buying or selling aspect. What more are you asking for? People trust each other and there are no fees involved. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other environments where you can buy or sell Stay on topic. I am speaking specifically to new boardies who are making this less of a community with all the "insistence". The ones that want immediate payment without stating it in their threads, that invoice so quickly they don't know who they are invoicing, etc. I buy all the time and I have great experiences but that's getting somewhat strained of late. Furthermore ,why would I speak on the awesome sellers and smooth transaction buyers when they are not the problem? ( don't answer- that is a rhetorical question) I don't see quick invoicing as being any kind of problem. If you post an :takeit:in someone's thread, in most cases it's done quickly so you secure the book and prevent someone else getting it. Why should not a seller invoice quickly? There could be several reasons. They may need the money quickly for another purchase. They may just need the money. They may just want to keep on top of their sales/buyers particularly if they have a lot of stuff to shift. If getting a speedy invoice upsets you then a quick pm on your part along the lines of; "Hi. Got your invoice. I will take care of it in a coupla days if that's ok? all the best etc..." You need to pick your battles and don't sweat the small stuff. If the invoices were as sweet as your example there would be no problem. There is no battle "per se". Quick invoicing is as annoying as a fast food cashier asking "Does that complete your order?" repeatedly when you are not finished ordering. I am making a short list of who to no longer patronize so I don't need your advice. Everyone is different and noobs are in a stage of learning. Patience goes a long way. Just politely telling someone "I may want to continue shopping in your thread" sends a message and teaches noobs to relax with the invoicing without even picking a battle. If you have teenagers, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
  19. That was the first issue I ever received through subscription.
  20. Asking for an invoice is not awkward and tense. That is a little annoying but it's usually noobie sellers. They learn to relax eventually.
  21. Are they new buyers or old buyers? If they're new buyers they may be wanting to make sure they are protected by Paypal. @ChiSoxFan - could be Also, if they are from out of country, there has recently been a problem with out of country conversions coming into $US aypal currency conversation glitch for Canadians - maybe other countries?
