  1. Speaking of sticker removal, here's one that arrived with the sticker already removed. This fits into the group @Get Marwood & I described where the distributor upped the printed UK price with a higher UK price because they are giant-sized. In this case, the missing sticker doesn't bother me too much because it reveals the printed UK price underneath. However, I would have preferred it left on due to discoloration and the loss of part of the "historical document."
  2. Very nice comic to have, and I like it more with the sticker. Other posters in this thread have credibly suggested it is a "bus stop copy" not a Canadian variant. They could also be found at train stations. These were distributed new but at a higher price, for the same reason we get overcharged for water at those places. EDIT: Although it looks like a subscription crease, and may be one, it could also have been creased for some other reason.
  3. I started buying around the same time as you. Avengers 93 is my first Marvel, straight from 7-11. I didn't learn about GA comics until a few years later, 1976 or so, and then bought whatever I could afford. Some highlights from the time: Batman 2, World's Finest 2, early Lou Fine Plastic Man, National Comics, Eisner Spirits, and the first Uncle Scrooge Four Colur #178, and Uncle Scrooge 1 (FC), Thun'da 1, and quite a few Williamson/Frazetta ECs and the famous "Monkey on my back" Feldstein cover (forget which comic that was, but think it was SSS. All of those are gone now, but I'm looking to get them back.
  4. The best stories, in my opinion, are: Barks ducks (#1), Eisner Spirits (#2), ECs by Kurtzman (#3). For gags, there are some good GA Archie and Little Lulu comics.
  5. I know this is a very late response, but I was just reading your answer and this is relevant, so here goes: A couple weeks ago, I attended Terifficon in Connecticut. One item that has been on my wish list for a long time is Four Color V2 #29, The Mummy's Ring. I saw at least 6 of them at the show. Every show I go to has one. Instead of getting one in low grade for $600, I bought a FC 189 in high grade instead. The point though, is that FC 29 is a very old comic from the early 1940's and is always available in multiples at every mid to large con I go to. Some modern newsstands however, are noseeums.
  6. Do you have a thread like this for Canadian distribution? I just bought an Avengers 26 with what looks like a Canadian price sticker over the US price. I bought it from a Canadian dealer, so I assume the sticker was original at the point of sale as a new comic. I'm trying to decide whether to remove the sticker or not. For now, I intend to leave it on.
  7. I did pretty well on this one (for me). A bulls-eye on the War Victory, then only 1 point off on the next 3 books. Got killed on the Crossfire. It looked a lot better to me than the grade it got, so there go 4 points. Total this round, 7 points. I seem to be really terrible at grading moderns.
  8. I just waken up after a long nap and submitted my grades. Too late?
  9. My best round was the first. In that round, I wrote mmy preliminary low and high grades, then compared to other comics that had been graded in the same era. It took a lot of time to do that, longer than a real CGC would likely spend, so I decided not to do that on the next two rounds. Result: scores for each among the worst I've ever received. I guess I need those training wheels after all.
  10. I don't know that I've ever seen a 1.0 before. I have seen 1.5's, and that's what it looked like to me. Also, I don't know there's much point in a grade below this for a complete comic. When I was looking at it, I was thinking, "That's as bad as it gets for a complete comic, so it's a 1.5." I got hurt (bad) on the MGL, which I gave a 7.5. Looking back on it, I don't know why I gave it that grade, unless I just mistyped the number. With the name written on the girl's forehead, I shouldn't have let it go any higher than 6.0, and then looked for other defects after that. The TOS and GL grades were close to mine (3.5 and 9.2), so I was happy. I over-graded the ASM. This is me thinking that CGC is lenient for older comics, so I arbitrarily bump them. I guess Silver age doesn't get the same bump as GA comics.
  11. As someone who collects newsstands and spends a lot of time looking for them, I can tell you your chart is misleading. The number of NS vs D copies printed does have an effect, but it isn't as strong as the effect of returns and destroyed copies. In my experience, very few directs are less common than NS editions, regardless of print run. This is even true in the 1980's. That said, some Directs are slightly more common (or seem to be) like ASM 300. It generally makes more sense to look at availability on an issue by issue basis rather than by era. While ASM 300 seems to be almost equally split between surviving NS vs D editions, slightly favoring D, issues on either side of it are the opposite. ASM 298, 299, 301, and 316 are less common in NS than D, usually by about a 1:3 ratio but it can be more like 1:25 for nearby issues by publication date. Having said all that, I don't think it is much fun to look for NS copies from the 1980's when the ratio of D:NS is about 1:2-1:8 in most cases. For that reason, I look for pence or Canadian CPVs instead, both of which are also newsstands. That usually changes the proportions to about1:25 for most issues. I ignore the 1990's, because almost all comics from that decade are not appealing to me. Starting in late 1999, NS editions become universally difficult to find, starting at ratios of 1:25 and getting worse from there. By 2004, there are quite a few issues that show up at a 1:100 ratio, and some are much worse than that, like UF4 (about 1:1500). Funny thing is that I pretty much hate all comics made from 2000 on and almost never read them, but like Pokemon, it is fun to try and find the rare NS copies, so I've put together about 20 short boxes of these so far.
  12. My grades: I arbitrarily graded higher than made sense to counteract the consistently low scores I'd been giving comics. I saw the tear on the Conan also, hence the 8.5. Vault of Horror #25 5 Adventure #235 7.5 Avengers #38 9 Betty and Me #16 4.5 Conan #8 8.5
  13. THat's what I was thinking too. Same for the Avengers. They both looked like 9+, but I didn't believe they'd be in the contest if they were.
  14. 2 bullseyes in a row, then blown to smithereens on the Action. I thought the foxing should have cost at least a full point. Speaking for myself, I won't buy a comic with foxing on purpose, and will get rid of it if I get one accidentally. Unless, that is, it is hard to find and out of reach except in low grade.
