Six years ago in this thread I said I'd start posting some of my books. Then you go to the store for a carton of milk and things just get away from you... I'll start with these very familiar JC Penneys, because that's where a fascination with promos/giveaways began for me. When I first opened Our United States to the page on Alabama - The Cotton State, with its tiny detailed panels filled with information, it instantly brought me back to my grade school days and the reports I did on various states. It was a very nostalgic rush. And of course Penney "designed and printed it as a gift for our young customers", distributing it to be used by over 3 million school children. A crass exercise in branding in 1949? Perhaps. I like to think it's more about this: "We are proud to present this State-by-State story of the land you live in. As you look over these pages, think about what a truly great country the United States is, and you'll realize how fortunate you are to be living in the "Land of the Free and Home of the Brave" - where everyone has an opportunity to realize his hopes, his dreams, his ambitions." So I'll begin my contribution here with a few of these gems that celebrate our home. God bless America. Of course we all know this beauty - it got Wertham's attention. At least four different versions of this book were distributed, three of which appear to have been intended to assist publisher Fred Danner obtain or retain public office. Although Overstreet lists Lloyd Jacquet studios as the publisher, these books suggest that perhaps Jacquet's studios simply provided the content for Danner Press publishing. The lack of a cover price and the explicit notation on one of the versions indicating that this was given away by Fred Danner define this as a promotional book, listed incorrectly in the main section of the Guide. Here's what Wertham had to say about this comic book, on pages 309-310 of SOTI: Typical is one called "Your United States". It devotes one page to each state and, although on bad paper and as smudgily printed as the others, it really contains some instructive information. But practically every state, although it gets only one page, has a scene of violence; if one doesn't, that is made up for in other states where there are two or three such scenes. For instance, a man hanged from a tree by a "vigilance committee"; Negroes in chains; corpses and dying men; a girl tied to a tree, her bound wrists above her head, her skirt blowing up in the wind and a coy facial expression of fright as in a sadist's dream; a girl about to be raped or massacred. Is that what you want your children to think is the history of "Your United States"?

Sci Fi, Pulp & Comic Illustrator Alex Schomburg by Lloyd N Phillips (formerly Green Lantern2008), on Flickr Some of his pulp and magazine covers are around, I think (Timely might have one...?). I knew I recognized that artwork on the table - a cover recreation? from Everyday Astrology, December 1946. Schomburg meets Dali. There are a number of small illustrations and astrological charts (unsigned) that I believe AS does inside the issue as well. It's not a superhero or Dear Beatrice Fairfax, but one posts what one can.

This is as close as I can come to hanging out with you guys. It's a promo from 1942 for Py-Co-Pay tooth powder. Supes was a big deal, went commercial in a hurry.

Saw this on Sparkle City's Sunday rollout last night. So this is the It Rhymes with Lust 6.0. Nice. We know what RedFury's 8.0 looked like, since it sold on Heritage. So with this 6.0 surfacing, we have images of the three top slabs and many of the mid grades. GPA has never captured data on this one. I'm interested to see how it goes. You'd think it should go for over 1K, especially given how strong Sparkle has been, but who knows, may be a bargain in the making. Ebay's reach is certainly different than Heritage's.

Very nice Steve very nice. Both Blue Ribbons very strong mid grades, and cream pages are not only acceptable but almost expected so any day is a good day when they're oww. And the ranks of Wartime Romances welcomes #14, which had been the conspicuous missing link in the 18 issue run. 17 of the issues had already been slabbed by 8/21/06, 12 on that census date. The new #14 would be a long time coming, showing up with a white page blast from the past. Check out the word balloon on the cover, to their sor- row the creative team was probably told by the editor that no they couldn't have a different size word balloon just for that panel, it would have to fit, could they think of another word for "sorrow"? But no, you really can't. Sweet haul..who'd you say you bought them from again? Andy

Young Love 69 The end of silver, or the beginning of bronze? October 1968 is a bit early for Bronze Romance, which I would start with the Marvel titles from Sept-Oct 1969. Let's split the difference and call it Pre-Bronze. A hard book to come by in grade, as I'm sure many of you know.

True Love Pictorial 1 As you can see, a considerable spine roll, but otherwise, not too shabby. . A great candidate for a Matt Nelson press. I'll let you know how it goes. For those of you who abhor pressing, avert your eyes.
