They're briefcases for the office. Top level execs like to demonstrate that they busy themselves at home with only the most important matters and therefore don't carry thick briefcases.

There could be more than four and of course in a multiplicity of colours.

In addition to the briefcases SPP also released binders:

It seems  that the Digger, Daddy, Davey and Freddy Flameout binders listed in the above catalogue were available in red, yellow, green and black. Here are some pictures I've managed to find:

SPP also released at least two more Weird-Ohs binders not shown in the above catalogue:

So I count at least six different binders. Each was perhaps available in red, yellow, green, black and perhaps even teal. Plus at least one pencil case:

I'm not sure how many different pencil cases there were or in how many different colours. All I know for sure is that any self-respecting Hawk Weird-Ohs enthusiast needs to have them all!

    :headbang:

@Hepcat I saw one of these Weird-Ohs binders at the flea market yesterday for $300. First one I have seen in person. I passed on it at that price.

  2. I have collected old advertising signs long before American Pickers made them fashionable. Just anything with great color or subject matter.

Was up early at the flea market yesterday when an older lady pulled this out of the back of her truck. Super cool old gas station sign. Great image, nice shape and a very reasonable price. HAD to buy it. Probably had 5 or 6 people admired it when I took it to my car. It wouldn’t have lasted 5 minutes if I didn’t buy it.

Some days the flea market Gods smile down upon the early worm…

  3. Very cheap flea market pickups yesterday. Rarely, see these ice cream premium giveaways. Just paid, stuffed them in my bag and moved on. Figured they were Tarzan ice cream premiums. Was happy to find them.

When I got home, I checked them out and found they were “Buddy” ice cream premiums. A new one for me. Similar but smaller size than the Tarzan ones.

I rarely find old comics out there anymore. A few pulps and PBs once in a while but there are almost always some BLBs. Since these were usually bought by kids who bought comics, you would think the flea market sellers would find comics as well but not very often.

As long as they are either good titles in high grade or scarcer ones like these at under $10, I have a hard time leaving them.

I think old houses are getting cleaned out. It is getting harder and harder to find any old magazines except maybe Playboy or car mags which I just pass on.

A selection from this weekend's Heritage auction.  For the life of me I don't know why you'd submit these for grading :o

I agree. For $65. Grading fees, there are so many better ones to waste your money on. I feel the same way about low grade GA or modern comic books.

Today, May 17, marks the 🎂84th anniversary 🎂 of the newsstand release of my favorite Timely, Marvel Mystery 9. I have fond memories of acquiring my first copy back in 1997 from Ted Van Liew @Superworld

Here are the five copies I have owned/own since 1997. Schomburg depth art in full display with the elevated train tracks and civilian crowd in the background about to witness the pending titanic battle 🔥💪🏾💧 The bolts busting loose from the girders from Subby’s iron grip always grabbed me. This is the best Subby pose on a Timely for me, and a big ticket 🎟️ Timely for the old school collectors @Ameri@Tsp99

One of my favorite Marvel Mystery issues! Way back in the early ‘70’s I got a single front cover from a friend. Amazingly, I found a coverless copy in The Buyer’s Guide which I bought. But I was a struggling college student and had to sell it. I have always regretted it and was never able to get another. So if someone has a copy with a nice detached fc and no bc, it might be my old copy…

CGC has been grading digests and paperbacks for quite some time. I'm pretty sure they'll grade anything you send them that will fit in a current holder. The problem is, the capsule is too big and they look a bit ridiculous. I'd submit some if they made a holder that was about the size of a comic book, but I suspect they're not ready to tool up for that.

I would consider it if I could request the slab size. Maybe a modern comic size would work best. It is probably the right thickness. I would hate to see it rattling around in a pulp case. They don’t seem to be very accommodating about requests. I would also like something on the label that indicates mine had the usually missing 2nd page. The one pictured above is the only graded one and is apparently missing this page. At least they seem aware of it. Just too many questions right now.

This reminds me of something I see at flea markets now.  Some people that are obviously not comic dealers will sell some old, but not rare, comic books.  They will go on Ebay to find the value and put the 9.8 price they see on it even though it's an ungraded, beat-up reader copy.  meh

Not that I see many old comics at flea markets anymore but yes. Coverage in the media causes that. But every once in a while, I run into folks that just don’t know any better or can’t be bothered. This is still what gets me up early on Sunday mornings…

interesting piece in the wsj today. apparently every investment on earth is flying high right now with the exception of comics. and yes, i know some PCH and other less common genres are doing well. but certainly SA, BA and moderns have been in the tank since the covid bubble burst.

i wonder if this trend continues in crypto, S&P, precious metals, oil, if we won't start to see comics prices return to being in the black again sooner, rather than later.

They will, but comics traditionally seem to do better when traditional investments are doing poorly. Will be a long time before comics reach Covid levels, if ever…

  9. Overstreet is just what it says it is, a “Guide”. Prices in it are low or actually high. A lot of stuff is actually worth a lot less. A yearly printed guide is impossible to keep up with an ever changing market. I use one a couple years old as a starting point. There is, however nothing better to quickly garner information other than prices.

To a smart comic buyer, it is just one tool. Internet sales, GPA, auction sites and of course right here on the boards are more accurate in real time. A smart comic buyer uses ALL of these resources to assign values.

I am old enough to remember before there was an internet and even an Overstreet Guide. The true Wild West. Sometimes, when buying books, I just use my gut and what stuff is just worth to me. My gut is rarely wrong.

Totally missed Sunday's pulps (and apparently so did everybody else based on some of the low, low prices).  I think this is a most excellent cover, as it still managed to grab $312 at 2.0 with slightly brittle pages:

Thought I'd seen a comp in the last couple years, but apparently not at Heritage, and I don't have a good image in my files, so maybe I'm slippin'.  Fridge magnets and posters do turn up at eBay, though, so somebody else recognizes a good cover :dollars:

Skeletons and Skulls on pulps are screaming hot right now!
