  1. Now who the hell is Theo Holstein again???

Here's an early Theo "outing" in Overstreet - as an advertisement:

There's a certain attraction to buying and selling with this guy. Just cannot put my finger on it . . .

Even the makeup of the ad is a trip down memory lane - who remembers Letraset?

I'm trying to get it out of my mind and and there you go doing that again...

Yeah, I'm a graphic designer from way back in the day. I used to use Letraset, amberlith, rapido graph pens ect. I love the psychedelic font he used for his name!

  2. A couple GGA "weird machine" covers. I love both these books! What the heck are these machines? Anybody got any more?

Briefer designed this Destruction Ray Machine which was featured in Rex Dexter.

Yeah, that is cool. Wasn't it something printed in comic books that you cut out and put together like a paper doll? Weird machine for sure.

  3. How does CGC recognize Kansas City books? I don't believe they are marked and were found by the Thompsons so long ago. I didn't think they even documented them. I think I might have a Capt. Marvel that I got in a trade from Don Thompson a hundred years ago at San Diego con I believe.

I started a "type" collection like Strawman years ago but kind of gave up when I couldn't find (or afford) many of them.

Now, I pretty much go for the ones with distinctive markings (Larson, Okajima, ect.)

I do have a Famous Funnies can't remember which issue off the top of my head, that I have the Lost Valley, Mile High, and Central Valley copies of. Would like to find more copies of that issue I don't have.

I'm a big fan of markings and names myself. I really don't have much interest in owning Mile High/Church copies that aren't coded, as I love those markings and "Larson" so much

I too love the markings and names. When I found the Guy Holcombe collection I felt an immediate bond with the former owner of the books. My favorite Windy Citys are the ones with the A Wallace neatly penciled in the logo. Most of these are late 40s and early/mid 50s. Here's the sig from Flyboy 1 (courtesy of Pedigree Man).

I've never owned a Windy City book. I have held out for a cool marked one but have had little success. One of these days the right book will come to me.

  4. Morning Dr. I believe you were the one who asked me for Patsy's at the Yorba Linda show. I don't believe I had any you needed. I was against the wall next to Carbo. Too bad we did not meet "officially". I always like your posts.

Hey RM. No that wasn't me, but I did have it in mind to try and find and meet you. And Brian too. But got there a little late, and then got caught up at Harley's and Terry's, chatting with Inaflash and Silver, throwing venomous glances at Beschara and generally avoiding Mike C's area. His gravitational pull is too strong for me. Last year at Yorba I asked him a question and 45 minutes later I'm still trying to get away and not make a commitment for a table at his new Con in Queens or some such.

If I get to WonderCon I will definitely make it a point to shake your hand. Glad you're posting now, brother!

I haven't been to the West Coast since the '60's..... you folks are making me want to thumb out there and check it out. GOD BLESS...

Hey Jimbo, it's probably changed just a little since the '60's but come on out, the water is just fine!

  5. Since I will never be able to compete with you Timely guys...Thought you would like to see a Capt. America Sentinels of Liberty Kit. Here is the complete first (brass badge) version. The second envelope is from the wartime version with the copper badge. This version is very slightly different.I foolishly sold this badge and card years ago then a few weeks later I found the envelope. This is why I don't sell much out of my collection much any more...

  7. Patsy's all the rage now. Al Jaffee's work was great and established the character, at least for the first half of the run. Al Hartley's work as the cover artist for the remainder of the series was merely meh, imho. A far cry from the gorgeous art he did for Atlas on their earlier romance books.

But this book...this book is something else entirely

I love this. You have great taste in art.

    :acclaim:

What did he paint on? Some kind of art board? Or is it canvas? The surface looks very smooth?

I hope you didn't buy it from Theo...

    He didn't! lol

Canvas backed by board. The apparent smoothness is probably result of heavy gesso used to prep the canvas before oils were applied. In places the oil paint is actually quite thick (white streak on window).

Both sooo nice Cat! If they were both priced a dime and I only had one dime I think I've give a slight edge to the Schomburg.

  9. The only issue of this title that I ever bought. Most of the time I read

them for free in the Barber Shop...I guess these were considered more

mature...along with FIELD & STREAM and The POLICE GAZETTE.
