  1. Not all Church copies are jaw dropping stunners. Consider the earliest ones and latest ones Edgar bought second hand. This Whiz is a case in point. I got this from Redbeard years ago. Hard to see but it does has some very light pencil scribble in the upper most right cloud. It also has the cursive "D" on the cover. Came with his own COA. If Ron owned it and said it was a Church, nuff said. He was one of the earlier purchasers of the collection and bought lots of the lessor priced books in bulk deals. I will say, if you really want to go to Church, you really need to save up and get one of the real nice ones. I just can't describe in words the look, feel, smell and freshness of a nice copy.

In my experience I agree 100%. I have had books that appeared 8.0 come back 5.0 with no other major negative notes other than a stain (and this was a stain on the inside cover that was large but barely noticeable).

Note to self, don't send any "cat pee" MCLaughlin Mile Highs in to be graded...

They don't send you a catalog because they know you've already got everything. :baiting:

Not in this auction. Jon and I have pretty different tastes. As a rule, I'm not into the pre hero stuff or even (gasp) Centaurs. But he does have quite a few Ace, MLJ, and Harvey's that I am lusting for.

Odd he didn't have any ECs, crime , horror or GA stuff. He certainly had a lot more focus than I do.

I think I was most impressed with his art. I am not an art guy generally but he really had vision and the smarts to get in touch with so many GA artists and score so many iconic pieces.

I browsed online several times.  Then when I got the catalog I browsed again & found other items I was interested in.  It also makes for an easier time when trying to note or make a list of items to pursue IMO.

I wish I qualified to be "on the list". A catalog would save a lot of time and I'm sure I missed something scrolling through those crappy Marvels.

  5. One thing I noticed in the auction was of course his comic book Pinbacks. He has some real rare ones. I wasn't aware he collected them as well. I'm sure he had to work to find them. I quickly moved to the end hoping he had the US Jones but no luck... If anybody has any interest and sense, they should take a shot at them. I have a feeling they might get overlooked with all the other mind blowing stuff. The guys I know that collect them aren't into comic books so some one might score. You won't have to compete with me as I have all of them. There is one though...

I thought a bit about consigning it so it would sell next lot after on Clink and thought... Nah.  I strongly feel that same way. I honestly think the Orange 7.0 next up following that bright 9.0 would turn out a dismal sum for the 7.0.  As you can see side by side the 7.0 looks ill and faded. It's actually a beautiful 7.0, but next to the 9.0

Its all about the color Chris. I barely noticed the technical grade of the two copies. Say, if they were both graded the same (and shouldn't be with the color difference), who would care about the "faded" one? I would almost always take a lower grade technical grade copy with color like that than a high grade technical copy with weak color. It's a beauty!

  7. Well gang, I finally drank the Kool Aide...

Way back at Terry's show I decided to "test the water". I talked to the wonderful Joeypost about the possiblility of slabbing a few books. What a gentleman. He spent a considerable amount of his time explaining the pressing and grading process to me. I really appreciate the education Joey! At the end of the conversation we both agreed on a promising candidate. So, I gave him this book and my info. It took quite a while but when you are dealing with the best, that is to be expected.

Saturday, the door bell rang and it was my friend the mail man with a package for me to sign. Was a real surprise because I really wasn't expecting anything. Then I noticed the return address. With great anticipation and trembling hands, I carefully opened the package. As with everyone here, my eye jumped to the upper left corner. I had to look twice. 6.5? really? 6.5?. Both Joey and I both had it pegged at at least a 7. I, of course, had my rose colored glasses on and thought maybe a 7.5. But there it was, a 6.5. About all I can find is a couple small, very light thumb stains on back cover and 5 or 6 very tiny, none color breaking spine bends. Page quality is cream to off white. Book, is tight, flat, well centered, sharp corners, glossy. No tears or creases. About as nice a copy as I could imagine especially for a black cover. I've had the book longer than I can remember and have always loved it. Probably paid very little for it when I got it. So, I'm not crushed just a little disapointed I guess. I thought I was a fair grader but guess I've got a lot to learn. Here she is. Hard to tell from this bad photo but what do you think?

As a point of reference, here is a copy of Flash #96 I recently bought that was cracked out of a slab (label included) from a very reputable dealer friend. Also graded 6.5. The spine has obviously a lot more wear and just doesn't have the sharpness and quality of the Cap. What am I missing here?

  8. Beautiful score Ed. Thanks for posting it all. Great to read it again. So very sad and tragic...

By the way, what ever you do, keep it in the dark as much as possible. Those silverprints fade real bad, real fast. I've been tempted by some of the Johnny Craig ones that Roger Hill has been selling. But, I would want to frame them for the walls and I can't because I know how bad they fade.
