  1. A couple more Woodys hit the junk pile today. This is a great title and a little overlooked I think. It's been a while since I had copies. Hard to choose which one I like best. Wood and Feldstein are probably my favorite overall EC cover artists. Which is your favorite and why?

Just beautiful colors on that book. I also have quote a few books from the "Miles 2nd Hand Store pedigree" Like "Bonnetts", they must have had some great books pass over their counter...

i get an average of 4 collections a week.  It has actually increased since last year.  There has been a huge increase in active buyers on craigslist though.

But what kind of collections? Stuff from the '80's on is all over the place and pretty easy to find. How often do you find GA and SA collections and non-common keys? And how many of them are OO?

I am finding less stuff locally, but I'm not sure if it's collections drying up, or the fact that there's much more competition for this stuff, or that sellers are much more informed and are selling the stuff directly via eBay, etc. It's probably all three to a certain extent. I know that when I used to go to flea markets, estate sales and auctions, I'd only be competing with a couple of other guys. Now there's several folks wanting the same stuff, driving the prices up so that there aren't as many deals and steals as there used to be. But I'd echo the sentiment that the boomer collections should really be hitting shortly. I think we'll be awash in collections before you know it.

I agree and I live in a large city with lots of estate sales, garage sales and big flea markets every weekend. Used to be me and maybe one or two people looking for comics. Sunday, I was at the flea market and I counted 9 guys either carrying comics or looking at them. Only one guy with anything of significance. He had a few crappy GA, some rough SA and a bunch of newer stuff. No keys. He was doing a brisk business. He always saves me a box to look at first though.  Bought 3 minor old books just because they were the only ones there and I had to have my comic fix. About once a year I find a decent score or a few lower grade keys. Not what it used to be like.

The online experience appears to be similar to the convention circuit today, at least for the type of books (mostly Golden Age) I'm looking for.

Previously, the only limitation for purchases was how much money did I want to spend - nowadays, I can't find enough quality material.

There is something to be said about collectors getting older, retiring, or passing away but how many of those collections will end up at one of the auction houses?

Me too. The only way to get the stuff I want is to go the big auction house route and pay through the nose until it hurts. The "thrill of discovery" is pretty much over. I just find near zero satisfaction in bidding in the big auctions any more.

Older collectors dumping their collections is really starting to happen now (Jon Berk for example). There will be many more, even my own someday. When a collection like Jon's comes out is sucks nearly all the money in the market place for some time.

There are still OO collections out there waiting to surface. Not as many, but there are more than a few just sitting awaiting discovery. I have a lot of fun finding them in estate sales, flea markets, antique stores when I least expect it. Trouble is, there are LOTS of other people looking for comics than ever before. I just gotta work a little harder for that thrill than I used to have to...

  6. Not all Church copies are jaw dropping stunners. Consider the earliest ones and latest ones Edgar bought second hand. This Whiz is a case in point. I got this from Redbeard years ago. Hard to see but it does has some very light pencil scribble in the upper most right cloud. It also has the cursive "D" on the cover. Came with his own COA. If Ron owned it and said it was a Church, nuff said. He was one of the earlier purchasers of the collection and bought lots of the lessor priced books in bulk deals. I will say, if you really want to go to Church, you really need to save up and get one of the real nice ones. I just can't describe in words the look, feel, smell and freshness of a nice copy.

In my experience I agree 100%. I have had books that appeared 8.0 come back 5.0 with no other major negative notes other than a stain (and this was a stain on the inside cover that was large but barely noticeable).

Note to self, don't send any "cat pee" MCLaughlin Mile Highs in to be graded...

They don't send you a catalog because they know you've already got everything. :baiting:

Not in this auction. Jon and I have pretty different tastes. As a rule, I'm not into the pre hero stuff or even (gasp) Centaurs. But he does have quite a few Ace, MLJ, and Harvey's that I am lusting for.

Odd he didn't have any ECs, crime , horror or GA stuff. He certainly had a lot more focus than I do.

I think I was most impressed with his art. I am not an art guy generally but he really had vision and the smarts to get in touch with so many GA artists and score so many iconic pieces.

I browsed online several times.  Then when I got the catalog I browsed again & found other items I was interested in.  It also makes for an easier time when trying to note or make a list of items to pursue IMO.

I wish I qualified to be "on the list". A catalog would save a lot of time and I'm sure I missed something scrolling through those crappy Marvels.

  10. One thing I noticed in the auction was of course his comic book Pinbacks. He has some real rare ones. I wasn't aware he collected them as well. I'm sure he had to work to find them. I quickly moved to the end hoping he had the US Jones but no luck... If anybody has any interest and sense, they should take a shot at them. I have a feeling they might get overlooked with all the other mind blowing stuff. The guys I know that collect them aren't into comic books so some one might score. You won't have to compete with me as I have all of them. There is one though...
