Betty is a bit needy, but sweet and eager to please, as well as pretty much down for anything. Veronica is spoiled, vain and manipulative, basically Reggie with a rack. She's high maintenance with no promise that she's actually worth it. Archie is a tool for keeping Betty on a string to make Veronica think she has competition. He's angling for a piece of that Lodge money down the road, but Veronica is never going to get serious.

    +1 for me too!

On second thought, Biljo contributed more to the growth of underground comics and could be replaced.

Don and Maggie Thompson-Publishers of Comic Art and editors the Comic Buyers Guide.

Roy Thomas-Co-creator of Alter-Ego, editor and writer at Marvel and current editor of Alter-Ego

Jerry Bails and G.B. Love for creating early comic buyers fanzines like Comicollector and Rockets Blast which were combined.

Alan Light-Editor/Publisher of the Buyers Guide which held everything together for years before the electronic age.

Bob Overstreet-OK, he gave everything a price, maybe not always right but it was a lot of information before the Grand Comic Database (which was created by Jerry Bails)

Probably should mention Howard Keltner for his comics book index and Jerry for the Who's Who.

What other projects? Microfilm (Jerry), Microfiche (don't remember).  Reprints (so many)?

These guys helped the hobby grow.  It has been more of a rugby match than an intellectual pursuit.  Probably need to add the inventor of eBay and management at CGC if we want an electronic update to the list.

If you mention Howard and Jerry for indexes, you got to mention Fred von Berkowitz for his multi volume EC indexes. Without him, I might have still wondered why I couldn't find Vault of Horror #1-11 or Haunt of Fear #1-14.

Reprints is easy for me. The Alan Light Flashback reprints. I probably bought all of them. Without those, I might not have been ever able to read so many GA keys at the time.

  3. I have come to the realization that I could never just pick five. But, I can pick one pretty easily. The last book I still have from my child hood collection. I found this in a stack of MAD magazines I hid up in our treehouse long after I had moved out of my parents house and my mom had dumped the rest of my comics stored in a closet.  My parents really hated MAD for some reason so I had to be sneaky.

Thanks dude.... I broke out that Mile High to smell it and touch it.   I never plan to sell it, so why not break it out and enjoy the darn thing.

How was it? Nothing like that Mile High smell, wet inks and just the feel of them. I've got a bunch of raws but could never bring myself to slab 'em...

Here's the 3 that I have.  I have slim hopes of finding a Confessions of Love 2.  I also regret selling my Baker digests, I had 2 copies of #7 and a #9 at one point.

VERY cool! I have never seen all 3 together. I don't think I have ever seen a copy of Confessions of Love at all.

I love that one too. Love the colors. I even have a Mexican version of it as well.

Here's how it looked on the newstand in Mexico. Not nearly as desireable, but maybe the only one out there.

  7. Remember the "good 'ole days" Jack? Nobody cared about this stuff. "Box fodder", many times, on the floor under a table. Got it from a guy selling Marvels at a show. I asked if he had any older books and me motioned me to a box. I went through a bunch of the usual Marvels in lower grade then I spotted this with a $20. price on it. I'd never seen it and it just blew me away. I bought the rest of his "old stuff" (about 5 more similar books in nice grade all priced the same). I'm pretty sure he told me $100. for all of them. He said he didn't like the "old stuff". I happily paid the man and floated away in bliss. At the time, I probably overpaid myself...

When I think of Crime comics, this is always the first one I think of, closely followed by a flood of others...

I thought about this for too long and came up with this list.  What I found is that there are "big" cool books that have high dollar value and "little" cool books that have low dollar value, but equally high "want" value.  In that scenario, the low dollar stuff tends to win out because it's very unlikely that anyone would be willing to make a cash offer strong enough for me to part with the book.  I need to come up with some fancy term for the "dollar-to-coolness ratio".

Battle Front 23 -- River City copy.  Great example of the era.  I struggle with a number of killer Atlas war books, almost all with Heath covers.  I settled on this one over a few others (e.g. War 11, 23, Battle Front 15, Men's Advs 20, etc.) due to the fact that I've seen or know of a few really nice copies of the others and I've never seen one to compare with this particular book.  None of mine are going anywhere, but if you were ripping them out of my hands I might hold this one the hardest.

Bill Battle 3 -- the epitome of anti-communist absurdity.  Lurked for this copy for years going back to when Mick showed me a copy back in '96 (oh, my arthritis!)

Journey into Unknown Worlds 49 -- Heath, Robots, and alien invasion... what's not to love?

United States Marines 8 -- about my favorite 50s Korean war cover.  So nonchalantly gruesome.

Green Lama 2 -- Certainly one of Raboy's best, if not the best.  Incomparable Church copy.

Very nice group! War comics like crime comics just don't get the love these days. As a kid pre-Marvel, I mostly bought SA DC war. The men in tights stories just didn't compare to Gunner and Sarge and Sgt Rock.

That Bill Battle is off the hook. The Green Lama is a master piece. But being a Robot Man, that Unknown Worlds cover is a special favorite.

Can't wait for you to find this one Tony. I'd really like to see a Baker of the day run like G.A.tor is running on his Centaurs.

Do you have most of his other non romance books as well? Know of anybody who has a whole set?

I've been working on a collection of all his Friction House work. All I have left is some later Jumbos.

As we are on giants, I have always liked this one among Baker's Crime genre.  The front cover looks decent, but the back cover has some water damage.

Hope you find one soon.  Here is my copy that I have owned for 20 years if I remember correctly.

I'm no Baker expert but I think this is the rarest Baker giant. Much tougher thanks the Diary Secrets giant. This is about the only copy I have seen. The fact that this is the online I recall seeing here supports this. It has been on my want list for over 20 years. I have kind of given up finding one unless I get lucky.

Oh, man that IS a tough one. This is the first time I have ever seen a copy of that. My vote for the toughest Baker giant.

Felix the Cat 1927 - took a while but found on Amazon on all places.

Wonderful book, but too thick for CGC to slab.

I wonder if that's changed now with the new cases - anyone know?5903d1faa98a2_FelixTheCat1927.thumb.JPG.b0c5d0e55daf02b34d7cd6177cd825b2.JPG

Nice! I'm a big Felix collector. Not just comics just anything mostly from the 1920's-1930's. Never seen that book before. Probably English?

I was at a department meeting at work (psychology) and the talk was bereavement. So I told them that if they collect that they should not leave a problem for their heirs and that "no one wants your beenie babys, your records, your baseball cards, your Lladros, or your comic books". A new employee approached me as we walked out and said that his not yet born kids would want his comics. I told him we need to talk!

They are out there for sure!!! And they want to find us as much as we want to find them, poor neglected things.

This is my favorite thread in General by far. I'm a big flea market guy (not just comics). I love to see what you guys dig up out in the wild.

I have gotten many good leads and finds by letting co-workers know I am a "picker" I have never been ashamed of being a comic book collector.

Speaking of tough.  I've been looking for a copy of this one for years ... in any condition.  And any condition about describes this copy!  Very happy to get even a beater copy because after this, I'm down to just one last Baker St John romance book to have the complete set.  Many thanks to a boardie for alerting me that this copy had popped up on a dealer's site.

WOW, just one Tony??? What is is? Maybe me or some one else can make it happen for you. It has to be done.
