  1. I have to say Mitch, this is maybe your best thread ever.  It has made me think of what and who are influental to me personally as the collector I am today. I think a list like this can mean different things to different people. All of these people have made an impact on the hobby and I'm sure there are many more that have yet to be mentioned. No way can I even begin to narrow it down to just five.

And by the way, thanks for paying stupid money for a funny book and raising the prices on all of us...

  2. Cool idea for a thread Rick

I had no trouble thinking of 3 but after that, it's all a blurr. I would post the 3 but can't get the photobucket thing to work right now so you will just have to wonder.

I would probably have trouble narrowing it down to 5 short boxes...

Sounds like you got the same problem I have.

I tried to separate the fact the thread listed people who were "important" to the  hobby with the good and the bad. I had assumed (maybe wrongly?) that the impact they had could just have been easily been a negative one.

Numerous names on the original top 5 and others mentioned since are not what I would consider fine upstanding individuals as human beings go.

There has been a lot of "ends justify the means" when viewing some of these persons in retospect on what they "did" for the hobby.

How they cheated and screwed people along the way to "add" to the hobby would probably make a lively but doomed thread.

Many of the "negative" individuals have also had a very "positive" side.

It has been my experience here that although there has been whispering and quiet talk about a number of these individuals, many are afraid (for some reason) to discuss it or disclose what they know. Money makes people go to the dark side pretty quickly...

    Interesting photo, thanks for sharing.

Don't you just love Matt's at the beach covers. (Beach blanket bingo).

One of his best beach covers I think. The colors on 'ole Bob's copy really pop!

Andy sorry it didn't work out as it's rare that I'm ready to sell anything on setup day. I like to focus on getting my booth ready and whenever the first person ask when I'll be ready to sell I give them a time usually the next morning and I stick to it 100% no matter who it is. This actually works out for a lot of pickers as they can prey on other dealers knowing I'm not selling to anyone.

I had Tom Nelson waiting at my booth at 8:45 patiently waiting until my 9 am pre show sales on Fri morning. Another dealer started going through my comic boxes and I told him I'd be open at 9 and he said it's only a $10 comic . I explained I had already told several others that I was going to open at 9 and I need to stick to it. He shoved the comic back in disgust and left. Me and Tom got a nice laugh from it.

It was nice to meet junkdrawer and 1Cool for the first time and I thank them for the purchases.

Friday was my best day for sales, Saturday crowds were insane and we were swamped 90% of the day. Sunday was kinda chill out time until load out which is very difficult. I had my helper get in line at 3:30 and at 6:45 he finally got on show floor.

Tax man said I need to sell a comic out of my collection so Saturday JLA 1 CGC 8.5 was sacrificed.    Not that GPA will report it but I was asking $18K and sold it for $17.5K.

I subbed 42 comics and was satisfied with most of the grades.

Some of my CGC sales were

    AF 15 CGC .5 incomplete (missing part of ad page), Bat 232 CGC 9.4, X-men 94 CGC 9.0, SS 4 CGC 9.4, Iron Man 55 CGC 9.4, Hulk 181 CGC 9.0, B&B 54 CGC 8.0, ASM 2 CGC 5.0, ASM 300 CGC 9.8, Marv Prem 15 CGC 9.0, Rifleman 10 CGC 8.5, DD 1 CGC 3.5, Flash 123 CGC 5.0, ASM 129 CGC 9.0

Thanks for the great report Leroy. Nice to the dealers market show reports. I like your style on set up time. As a dealer, I don't usually open to anyone until the show opens. Nothing worse as a paying attendee knowing all the other dealers picked the place clean before you get in. I might lose a few sales early, but I find that the dealers show up when I'm open. I'd patiently wait for you to open at 9:00. I know you'd have stuff I want!

Steve is doing just fine, and helping out fellow collectors...he still is a force....and he cemented comic book fandom in a way with his business practices. Sure a few pissed off people along the way...but overall a super guy

Thanks Mitch. I was impressed with how much of a true collector he was.

+1.  No photobucket for me.  Too bad to as I was about to respond to Gator's awesome 5 favorite Golden Age post.

I finally got to log on to the Bucket in 4 days. Got on in the first try, rather quickly I might add. Seems to be working normal now. I tried to post a few fotos as I usually do and no dice. I feel better crossing one hurdle off the list. Seems to be here.

Try Mozilla, it's not working on Chrome, but I can access my account on Mozilla. PB has been pushing a  yearly subscription this week at a "one time only discount". I am a paid member, but this would be a "better" subscription, at a discount. When  you try to ask if they will fix their bugs first, the response gets returned, so something weird is happening. They also extended the "48 hours" to more.

When I wrote to ask why my storage keeps showing as almost full, the tech said they changed their size limits, so they are storing bigger pictures now.
I don't know enough to know if that could be causing part of the problem, but I'm guessing it doesn't help.

Thanks Sharon. I've tried it on chrome, Firefox and safari and I still can't log in. I am a paid subscriber. I thought that maybe my account had been hacked since I got in once and it appeared my photos were all gone. I will contact them and see what I can do. It appears to be a two part problem for me.

A couple of others that came to mind after my earlier posting are:

    G.B. Love

    Jim Van Hise

Again, these are folks who had more impact on me, mostly through indie published fanzines or books about comic history leading to my interest and learning.  That is what fandom means to me - sharing knowledge, exuberance, information, etc. out of their love for the hobby, often using their own resources to do so.  Thankfully, it was contagious enough to make this hobby so strong today.

    Yeah, that's what ment.

Also Richard Kyle Alter Ego Magazine and his great comic book shop Wonderworld Books. Many hours were spent listening to a guy who bought Tec 27 off the stands. He knew how much EC comics ment to me even giving me his own EC Fan Addict to me as a present. He only sold current books but would show up with a few "oldies" for once in a while. You wouldn't believe the wall of Kirby covers he had that could be bought for a mere $150. Being a starving college student I could only stare in wonder every time I went in!

  10. Another couple...

(sorry to these gentlemen in advance for forgetting their first names and probably miss spelling their last names as well...)

these are people important to me personally by the way they affected my tastes and did some good amount of work to document stuff for us.

Keltner for his great indexes of GA comics.

Fred Von Berkowitz? For his EC indexes

Roger Hill and Bhob Stewart for promoting early EC fandom. Roger is still well and kicking. Sure would like to meet him some time)

Really sorry to see him go. He had a lot of great stories about buying GA books off the stands.

Coupled with the sluggishness and timeouts, things are looking mighty rocky right now.

Yeah, I miss Marty too. But I don't blame him. If this problem isn't fixed, I'm toast. I just don't have the time or patience to switch over to another program. I have too many photos in the bucket to do so at this point.

I went and checked the first page in my junk thread and most but not all of my photos are missing. I have had problems even getting on the bucket since Thursday. I thought it was them.

If they don't get it straightened out, I may be just posting without photos or joining Marty.

Technology is a blessing and a curse...

Yeah, I guess that does work.  We've still got the problem, though, of all the broken links to previously posted scans.

I would to hate to see all that board history wiped out.

I don't think it is CGC. I think it is Photobucket. I haven't been able to log on since last week. Some of my previously loaded images are here and some are not. Anybody else having trouble logging in?
