  1. there's a difference between endorsing and having a direct financial interest in something. BIG difference. CGC has stepped in a big steaming pile of PGX with this brilliant aquisition. It's actually a pretty good move of corporate raiding that will gain short-term revenue at the expense of the overall reputation of the company, but I would venture a guess that several years from now, the hobby will look back at this and signfiy it as being a detrimental move. It may open the door for another grading service, but that will fragment everything - probably causing oversaturation for graded books by different companies, different opinions - ultimately underminding the respect and importance of a graded book. It will drive prices for graded books and values down for ungraded books - while driving up revenues for those companies. Again - all short term solutions that ignore the long-term ramifications in order to make money. This. It's all about short term gain while (most likely) negatively impacting the future of the hobby. Get it while the gettings good.
  2. At least they're not yet in the business of actually selling their own graded comics. Beckett, a sports card grader, does that, and that's way over the ethical line.
  3. Wow. This is a huge, huge game changer. I already feel a little dirty.
  4. For years, I've assumed the Copper Age began with Secret Wars 1, just based on the idea behind mini series and crossovers, so I'm glad I found this thread. One of the best I've read on the boards. So kudos to all of you who participated in the discussion. (thumbs u I've been slowly buying Copper comics to collect/read, typically starting with issues from 1985, when I first started reading as a kid. Now, after reading this thread, I plan to scoot back to early 1984 and start collecting/reading from the very start of the Copper Age, which, of course, started with Swamp Thing 21.
  5. Am I alone in speculating only during the pre-order phase? I don't tend to go back and buy books that might be hot after the fact. If I don't order it based on the solicitations or early word-of-mouth, then I tend not to buy it at all.
  6. No offense, but doing this would all but ensure the Modern section would be nothing but talk about values and speculation. We have too little talk about the actual comics/art/stories as it is. I completely disagree there though, its been that for a long time. There all types of threads on books here. Bedlam,Revival, Chew, No Place like Home and so on. The problem is the modern board is full of speculators like it or not. CBR is a better board just for comics/art and stories discussion. I was just trying to clear out one thread of some unrelated stuff. I understand your point though. Fair point. I've always appreciated the balanced threads, that have people talking $ and story. CBR and other forums are too fan boyish, unfortunately. Love this place, though. Speculation is great, I just don't want it to sway too far that way for love of the story...

  8. It'll only stay hot until we learn that the 2099 Spidey has nothing to do with Superior.
  9. Uh, that's kinda like the devil forcing Homer to eat donuts. Stale donuts.
  10. You know, every time I see a Secret Wars II cover, I think, "You know, maybe these aren't as bad as I remember." But when I open the book and try to read one, I'm like, "Yeah, they still suck."
  11. My LCS had about 10 copies of that Warriors book. Looked pretty cool, actually.
  12. No one at my shop knew anything about the Red Hood issue, but then again, it's just one panel, so who knows if it'll mean much (well, I assume it's just the one panel...haven't read the issue). My LCS was limiting Catwomans, but they had 20-30. And they had one copy of Batman 13 left.
  13. Some of the conversations on this very site actually talk about the stories. You can find a few posts about the story quality scattered in this thread: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5966123#Post5966123
  14. How the heck do people get second prints? My LCS is always stand offish when I ask about ordering them, but they do sometimes appear on the shelves. But typically, I don't even know about it 'em until after they're sold out.
  15. Not to discount Oakman's wise words, but I've found that going directly to E Gerber is a little less expensive. But that's here in the States. I don't know what it'd be like shipping 200 of these bags/boards overseas.
  16. I suggest picking some up next time you're in the States.
  17. This should be required reading for all Newbies.
  18. Very cool! Now get a Brodart on that dj. Is there a recommended type I should get? I don't think anyone else answered this, but I've been using this one for years and have over 500 hardcover dust jackets covered and looking gorgeous: BroDart Fold-on Archival Book Jacket Item # 10-427-005 Size: to 10" (get a slightly bigger size if you end up covering your hardcover comic collections) I prefer the rolls to the precut sheets. http://www.shopbrodart.com/Book-Jacket-Cover/_/Brodart-Fold-On-Archival-Book-Jacket-Covers/
  19. Those are three great scoops. I'm curious to know why the woman on the January issue is wearing clothes at all.
  20. David, those are great links. Thanks for taking the time to post those. And thanks to everyone to offering me some advice. Although I've been interested in pulps for years, I've hesitated getting into them, just like I hesitated with GA comics. Here's hoping that the pulps will be as rewarding as my (albeit limited) foray into golden age comics.
  21. How readable are these old pulps? I'm asking more about the physical nature of the bindings. Are they more or less likely to fall apart on you than, say, a GA comic in roughly the same condition?
  22. Thanks, David. My primary interest is always going to be ERB, but I'm also interested in, well, everything you listed. I like to sample new things, primarily based on the cover or an interesting author. My guess is that I'm most interested in books that are on a budget (around $50) but that also present fairly well. I know that excludes most of ERB's pulps, but you have to start somewhere.
  23. I'm interested in buying some old pulp magazines. I plan to read through this thread to see if the answers are here, but what's a good place to start looking into these old magazines? I'm curious to know more about likely condition and values to consider being I just dive in. Can anyone recommend a good seller?
  24. Despite being a Broncos fan, George is top-notch in my book. As a buyer, he communicates well and sends money along quickly!
