The only cover I was watching for fun was the Iron Man #95 cover by Kirby.  Figured 50k, maybe.

    $93,000...yowza.

    Dan

Original Comic Art:Covers, Jack Kirby and Al Milgrom Iron Man #95 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1977)....

Beautiful cover that hits a nostalgic sweet spot for me.  I agree it went higher than expected.  I love these full detailed background covers from the 70s/80s.

I don't know what is currently the most ridiculous coming from him : this or the bad photo-novel he is doing with JR SR's picture (and bad paste-up) on the Spectacular SM 259 page...

Man I missed out on the SM 259 piece when it was around $60,000. Now it's $315,000.    Hmmm, well he does have a nice Larry Lieber Spider-man strip for only $78,000.

Reserve of $240k on the TOS 50 1st Mandarin.

Reserve of $120k on the JIM 93 splash.

Reserve of $150k on the Conan 15 cover.

Why do OA consignors have no cajones?

Hmm, not sure any of these reserves will hit.  I would think if a consigner insists on a reserve, the auction house should make it a low end # to ensure it sells.  Not some pie-in-the-sky # with the hope someone out there trips it.  Though I guess in this crazy market maybe they all hit anyway.

CAF Update: From a nostalgic point of view, this is the most important piece I've ever posted on CAF to date!

I had a chance to buy this in 2005 & let it slip by.  I was not going to make that mistake a second time!

Wow, incredible pickup. Remembering what your interests are in reading previous posts of yours over the years, I guessed what it was you picked up before clicking the link.   Glad you were able to have a second chance to pick up an important piece to you.  This is definitely one of the more memorable covers from the run.

The #27 page?  I think it ended at $6600.  I believe I was the underbidder unless my proxy bid got squeezed out by a prior.  Super memorable content for me, but, I just couldn't justify going into the $7Ks (including sales tax, the bane of my OA buying existence) for that page; I mean, the Springer/Mushynsky-drawn page is really not easy on the eyes.

You are right, it did end at $6,600.  I think maybe the next bid would have taken it over $6,900 which I would have been unwilling to do.  You are also right that this Springer page wasn't easy on eyes eyes, but it did have great content, and was  a very memorable issue.  I was looking at it through my 12 year old self eyes and would have loved to have gotten it.

I strongly recommend staying away from AFA Joes.

With that said, I would pay attention to three places where they are sold on a regular basis:

    Hakes

    eBay

    Facebook Group GI Joe 1982-1994

You can get a decent gauge on what they sell for by looking up realized auctions and BINs and to see what things were offered for in the FB Group.

Again last summer I almost caved and bought one and when I looked at the figure closely I noticed that the elbows were cracked.  The subgrade for the figure was the usual 85, but there was no way given the split elbows that the grade was still true.  We have seen the figures where the rubber band snaps on the graded piece leaving a floppy figures sealed on the card, but the broken elbows were alarming because it means that the plastic itself had further degraded.

    Just be careful.

Knowing what we know about the issues with collecting MOC Joes, I've been really surprised at the increasing AFA prices the last couple years.

I am not a sex maniac or cross-dresser. I also collect TV and Movie props. That was a 50th B-day gift to myself. Its the 2nd Leela costume from Doctor Who (Tom Baker 4th Doctor), I purchased it directly from the actress Louise Jameson who wore it on the series.

Glad you pointed this out or I would have missed it in the picture.   As a Doctor Who fan, that is a really cool piece of memorabilia. (thumbsu

  8. Funny, I had the exact same thought zhamlau when I saw the thread title.  I remember on Comicartlive a few months back there was a brief discussion about the desire for a Midwest show.  Hoping it can come to fruition.

How much of a drop off do we think there would be between the value of say the TF1 cover versus 3 or 5?

How about drop off for GI Joe 1 cover versus #2 or #3?

The G.I. Joe #3 cover is on CAF.  If memory serves, I remember seeing it on Bechara's wall at a convention maybe 10 years ago with a sticker price of around $20,000.  Wonder what it's worth now.

You and I must have been battling it out early on.   If that was you, then once I placed a bid to outdo yours, I was immediately beaten and it started to go back and forth within a minute to $8000...   I expected the page to hit around $5000, but like I said above, I know of a couple of collectors that most likely would have done anything to get that page.  One of them is in the vintage GI Joe toy collecting group on facebook so I am wondering if he picked it up.

Actually I never did get any bids in. I was tracking with the intent to bid near the end, but bids got too high for me to even participate.

I'll have to take a look at the issue later today but I'm pretty sure this is the first time we see them both in a full appearance. The page before might have them in shadows in the background or something similar. It's been a while since I flipped thru this issue.

I had my childhood copy of this book available.  It looks like this page was the 1st Roadblock and Duke appearance and they were not on any prior pages in the book.  They introduce themselves to the rest of the Joes on pages that follow.  I was tracking the OA for this page, and thought I had a shot at $3,000 or so.  Shocked it went for over $12,000 even with the 1st appearances.  Great page though.
