  1. I second this approach. I decided several years ago to get serious about filling out my Superman collection. To do that I needed funds (those ten centers ain't getting any cheaper). I looked at my 50+ longbox hoard, and fired up the old Ebay account. I'm now at about 30 loosely packed longboxes. 12 of those are the Superman books, 12 are the "keepers", and I'm down to just 6 or so longboxes of miscellaneous titles. And the best part? I've never had more fun collecting since I started cleaning house. I now enjoy freeing up space in the boxes, and filing away nice books from the1940-1950's. It's no longer a chore to go into my office and try to find room in packed longboxes for more books. I imagine by years end, I'll be digging into the "keepers" to fund more purchases, but so far I haven't truly missed a book I've sold. Yeah, there have been some that I wished I waited an extra 6 months or so before I sold them to take advantage of movie hype news, but you win some you lose some.
  2. I know that Showcase #4 hit in late mid-to-late 1956, but 1958 seems to be the magic year for the Superman family of books. There's no real line-in-the-sand demarcation from the Gold to Silver, but it just seems like a wave of new creativity hit that year for them. I, myself, like big bold beginnings so I always instinctively think of these as the starting points for the silver age... Adventure Comics #247 (04/58) - 1st Legion of Super-Heroes. Within a year, Red Kryptonite will follow. Action Comics #241 (06/58) - re-introduction of the classic Fortress of Solitude. Within a year, Brainiac, Kandor, Supergirl, and Metallo all follow. Superman #123 (08/58) - prototype Supergirl issue. Within a year, Titano, and Lori Lemaris all follow. Superboy #68 (10/58) - 1st Bizarro. Within a year, Beppo the Super-Monkey!! World's Finest Comics is a wild card, as I'd put the first Silver Age issue at #71 from 1954, as this is the when Supes and Bats start teaming up in the same story. Maybe it's a phototype Silver Age issue! Yeah, that't it. Anyways, I'm sure I'm a party of one with my picks, but that's how my train of thought works! YMMV
  3. Seconded. Such a great run of books, you won't be disappointed.
  4. Received my books from the epic Superboy sales thread, and I couldn't be happier. You'd be hard pressed to find a more pleasant ambassador for comics than Sharon. The books looked great and were sturdily packed. Even after the USPS decided to send my book via the scenic route, they still arrived safe and sound thanks to Sharon's due diligence with the packaging. Can't wait until the next thread, and I'm saving my money!
  5. I'm sure they also contact the sellers when they, themselves, find a good deal as to make sure they only pay current fair market value. It only seems fair...
  6. I'll take the Millenium set, the two Silver Age Classics (247 & 252), and the Annual. Hell, give me the Adam Strange set too.
  7. It just seems a little fishy that it got relisted for ten times the initial listing. Color me skeptical.
  8. Yeah, I wonder who the Good Samaritan was that tipped the seller off on what he really had? I know I'd be pretty peeved if someone came in after the fact and meddled. That's why I don't post stuff in here before the books are shipped and in my possession. And if it's not my deal...I just stay out of other's affairs.
  9. While not exactly a whole room, I do have two shelves in my office dedicated to displaying comics. i collect the Superman family of titles, so I usually find a theme and swap it out every couple of weeks or so. This week's theme in the spoiler below, in case you want to play along at home and guess what it is. Special thanks to @skypinkblu for the Superboy #60 from her recent sales thread for the inspiration for this week's grouping!
  10. We're on a road to nowhere...
  11. I remember being scoffed at by a particular clerk as I was buying their two copies of MSH #18 for $10 total, "you do realize that these guys aren't even going to be in the movie, right?" Selling those and a bunch of early Rockets and 1st appearances nearly bankrolled my entire Action Comics #242 purchase. Best return on investment ever! I'd kill to get those early movie spec days back again.
  12. There's still cheap copies of their first appearances? From my experience, that ship sailed a couple of years ago.
  13. It looks like they forgot to draw his pupils in too. I'll have to take care of that when I get it...lol
  14. That's an awesome cover. I usually don't like detached covers, but I'll make an exception for that one.
