  2. Yes, they have to be attached to the comic as they were when it hit the newsstands.
  3. For me, getting back into collecting in 79 was all about relieving my childhood memories from the 60's. I stopped buying/reading newer comics with the Onslaught series, you had to buy 10 books a month to keep up and it got complicated, I much prefer the simplistic art and storytelling of the early Silver Age, today's books have too much blood and gore for me, not interested in any of that in TV, Movies or Comic Books, so basically for me, it is all about Nostalgia.
  4. Mistrimmed outer edge, long/diagonal color breaking crease by top right by corner, a few small color breaking spine ticks, moderate discoloration of front and rear cover, some color loss in the price box. As with the other book, I "assume" the rear cover looking mistrimmed is the camera angle. IMO...FN+ 6.5 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  5. Slight edge wear on right side of the top edge, also slight corner wear in the same area, a few color breaking spine ticks, slight tanning on the rear cover outer edges. Is this a mistrimmed cover or from the camera angle? If it is from the camera angle...VF- 7.5 to VF 8.0 If it is the book...FN 6.0 - FN+ 6.5 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 7.5 VERY FINE- (VF-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. 6. Welcome To The Boards!!! I have been collecting since 1979 and all of my books (2000, except 1 graded Book) are also Raw. From what you are showing this book not only has water damage and due to this it appears that the pages in those areas have become brittle and are falling apart to the touch. A book is graded on it's entirety, however, brittle pages and staining are a killer, with just a quick glance at your photo's, this book appears to be in FN 6.0 range without the water damage/brittleness, with the damage, I do not see this book grading higher than a GD 2.0, possibly lower if the damage gets worse. As far as repair, it would have been easier to repair the damage had it been caught when it happened and dried properly, as it is, with the pages becoming brittle and stained, it would require restoration to repair the issue which would probably be costly and not worth the effort on this book. (Yes I know this books value in low grade is in the $300.00 - $400.00 range) Everything I see online only talks about drying/repairing water damage as it happens, not after the water has dried and damaged the pages. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of conservation/restoration will chime in. Page Quality By Grade. PR 0.5 - Paper exhibits moderate to severe brittleness (where the comic book literally falls apart when examined). FR 1.0 - Paper is brown and may show brittleness around the edges but not in the central portion of the pages FR/GD 1.5 - Paper is brown and may show brittleness around the edges. GD 2.0 - VG 4.0 Paper is brown but not brittle. VG/FN 5.0 - Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. FN 6.0 - Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness.
  7. Some of your pics have glare making it difficult to see. Slight corner/edge wear, small fold/roll along outer edge, slight stacking curl, color loss on Spider-Man's mask, one, color breaking spine tick by top edge of lower staple, slight color loss at top edge to the right of "Hero", 3 long creases/folds near lower edge running horizonal starting at outer edge, IMO...VF/NM 9.0 - NM- 9.2 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only a minor additional defect or defects that keep it from Near Mint. A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with only the slightest dimming of reflectivity. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16-1/8" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed. 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present.
  8. I cannot answer your questions on a clean and press since I do not use these services. Blunted corners with color breaking creases at lower left and right corners, slight edge wear with color loss and denting at upper edge, two color breaking scratches at right lower edge, minor spine stress with 2-3 color breaking spine ticks and some wrinkling/creasing, moderate staple tears at top staple, moderately discolored staples, moderate foxing/discoloration in price box and along spine, moderate staining/foxing/discoloration of rear cover, denting on top edge of rear cover, wrinkles/creasing along spine of rear cover. Due to the staining/foxing/discoloration, IMO...VG/FN 5.0 - FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. 9. Blunted corners with color loss/slight creasing at upper right corner, 1/8" square missing/torn at top left corner, small dent w/color loss on top edge, minor spine stress with 1-2 small, color breaking spine ticks, moderately discolored staples (rusting?), minor stacking curl, 1/4" triangle missing from top left corner of rear cover, moderate discoloration/staining/foxing on rear cover. Pieces missing from and edge or corner are not allowed until you get to VG 4.0 (As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable.), you have two, without the pieces missing this book, IMO, would be in the FN+ 6.5 - FN/VF 7.0, with the two pieces missing, IMO...VG/FN 5.0 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to TopAn above-average but well used comic book. 10. Slight corner wear with some color loss and color breaking creasing at top right corner, denting on top edge, minor spine stress with 1-2 color breaking spine ticks, staples discolored, 1/16"-1/8" triangle missing from lower edge, slight foxing on rear cover. Due to the missing 1/16"-1/8" triangle at the lower edge, and I may be overly harsh on this, IMO, this book grades at a... Two things to note here... VF 8.0 - An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. VG 4.0 - This is the 1st mention of any pieces missing out of an edge or corner, VG/FN 5.0 does not allow any pieces missing...As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. 18. Found this on the web, sums it up perfectly. "The problem with airtight containers, is that over time the paper degrades. There's nothing you can do to completely stop it. When it does, it releases gases. If those gases aren't able to escape, they speed up the degradation. It becomes a vicious cycle." Also, just an FYI... Since it has been mentioned numerous times that CGC slabs are not airtight, they are also not UV protected.
  19. I was torn on this, I hemmed and hawed about assigning a grade of GD/VG 3.0, when I am in doubt or on the fence about a grade, I always go lower.
  20. I looked at several issues online and none had the white line you are showing, most issues had signs of color loss in different areas due to the black cover but not that line, which also appears to be color loss, however, it appears to be uniform, unfortunately I do not know if that is from the printing/bindery process or something after the fact caused this. Will it affect grade and value?
  21. Rounded corners w/moderate color loss, edge wear with color loss, moderate color loss across cover, especially the top right corner area, color breaking crease/scratch thru the "5" in the bottom of the price box, moderate spine stress w/multiple color breaking spine ticks/creasing and small tears, minor to moderate staple tears, rear cover corner and spine creasing, moderate staining/discoloration of the rear cover. Moderate soiling, staining, discoloration and foxing may be present. The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is usually a 1/2" triangle or a 1/4" square, although some Silver Age books such as 1960s Marvels have had the price corner box clipped from the top left front cover and may be considered Good if they would otherwise have graded higher. Tape and other forms of amateur repair are common in Silver Age and older books. Spine roll is likely. May have up to a 2" spine split. Staples may be degraded, replaced or missing. Moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached. Moderate interior tears may be present.

Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing.
