First, be sure the books are completely dry, if wet place the books in a cool/dry place and open the pages for a few hours. For the odor you can place dryer sheets in each book moving them to different pages daily, also, baking soda absorbs smells/odors, place the books in a box/container with a lid along with a couple of open boxes of baking soda.

Books are graded in their entirety, here are the grading standards for page color only. How much of a hit does a book with Tan pages take if everything is else is perfect? NM/MT 9.8 - Paper is white, supple and fresh. NM+ 9.6 - .Paper is off-white, supple and fresh. NM- 9.2/NM 9.4 - Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. VF/NM 9.0 - Paper is off-white to cream and supple. VF 8.0 - Paper is cream to tan and supple. FN/VF 7.0 - Paper is cream to tan. FN 6.0 - Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness.

I cannot answer your questions about pressing, however, what you are saying sounds like "Overkill" to me. you also stated... Books should not be "tight" in a comic box, they should not be squeezed in so tight you cannot easily move them, if the box is not full and the books tend to fall use a towel in front to provide support for the books. Stacking curls are created when books are laid down flat with multiple books laid on top, the weight of this creates the stacking curl, books that are stored properly and in the proper environment will not succumb to stacking curls. This is a No No!!!
