  1. When I was younger and long before the internet I bought almost every Marvel Related nick-knack I found in stores, just because I "had" to have it, I am guessing this is what happened with you.
  2. Just so you are aware, CGC cases are not hermetically sealed, they still need to be stored in the same appropriate environmental conditions (away from UV, moisture and stored in a controlled temperature environment). If you send it in Please let us know what the grade was and what if anything was noted about the lines.
  3. The only way to know if these lines are common would be to have others that have a copy look at theirs. I have to ask, what is the reason for having the book graded? If this is to protect/display be aware that CGC cases are not UV protected, there are UV protected comic book frames available.
  4. I would say you need to determine if this was a common problem on this book. I do not have my books graded, however, the grading standards for NM 9.4 - MT 10.0 state... "Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed." That is a pretty vague statement considering that the word "subtle" is open to different interpretation, IMO, being on the inside pages and not really affecting the story in any way, and, by definition those lines are "subtle". "not immediately obvious or comprehensible. difficult to detect or analyze," NM- 9.2 states, "A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed." which is also a very vague statement
  5. Are the "Tatooz" still present, IMO they were meant to be removed and do not affect the story or integrity of the book so I personally do not downgrade for this. If they are missing CGC will give you a "Green Qualified Label" stating the "Book Is Incomplete, Missing Tatooz". Slightly blunted corners, minor spine stress with a few, slightly color breaking spine ticks, discolored staples, large stain on rear cover that bleeds through. From what I have read CGC is not lenient on staining. Without The Stain 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 7.5 VERY FINE- (VF-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. With The Stain (IMO) 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.

  7. Those books hold a lot of fond memories for me, I also collected other books from my childhood that no one else would be interested in such as Beany And Cecil and Tom Terrific, Enjoy that book and hopefully there are books out there that bring back fond memories for you, that is what this is all about. You are not going to do all of the puzzles and games are you?
  8. $2.00 is a GREAT price for issue 88. Growing up in Phila. in the 60's Bob's Big Boy was my favorite restaurant, my memory was that the big boy statue was 30' tall, I was a bit disappointed as an adult when I found out it was only 7' tall. However, I started collecting the "Adventures Of The Big Boy" books back around 2005 or so (no longer buy any issues), the series runs from 1957 - 1996, I was/am only interested in the books between 1957 and 1965 (we moved in 65 so no more Bob's Big Boy. ) I currently have the majority of the issues from 61-99, 58 is my oldest.
  9. The second copy has what appears to be a spine split at the top, corner wear w/color breaking creases, edge wear w/color breaking creases, minor color rub, top edge is mistrimmed, minor spine stress, rear cover has moderate to severe staining and the tears you mentioned (which are not really visible to me, closer/clearer pics of the spine, rear cover, inside covers, interior pages, staples, centerfold would have been nice, however, from what I can see. IMO, the rear cover is going to prevent this book from being a higher grade. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present. 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  10. I do not have my books graded so I cannot even begin to tell you what CGC would think of these books. (From everything I have been reading their grading is not consistent, they are human after all.) The first copy has moderate color rub, blunted corners with slight color breaks, a few spine ticks with slight color breaks, without a good view of the spine, staples, the inside covers/centerfold and rear cover, my approx. grade is... 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  11. From the two somewhat blurry pics you have provided the book appears to be a high grade copy. I do not see any major defects but without clearer pics of the spine, corners, inside pages/centerfold... I would not grade a book higher than a NM 9.4 without having the book in front of me, so, based on what I can see... 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to TopNearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples are generally centered; may have slight discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed.
  12. I would think that someone that owns a book with the pinups missing may want them, you have to determine what issues they came from. http://marvelsilverage.blogspot.com/2018/10/marvel-masterwork-pin-ups.html
  13. Corners blunted w/color breaking creases, edge wear with color breaks, small tear on outer edge of front cover, minor to moderate staple tears, minor to moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks, discolored lower staple, top left corner folded over on rear cover. I cannot see the inside covers or centerfold to see if either is loose or detached. Going by what I can see, IMO... FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  14. Corner wear w/color breaking creases, minor spine stress with a few spine ticks w/color break, discolored staples, waviness to front and rear covers (moisture?), minor to moderate color rub on front cover, slight staining/foxing on rear cover. I cannot see the inside of the front and rear cover or the centerfold so I am going to "assume" there is no issues... IMO... FN+ 6.5 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. 15. Moderate spine stress w/color breaking creases, moderate edge wear w/color breaking creases, color breaking crease at top right (running through the "G"), slight spine roll w/slightly fanned pages, slight foxing on rear cover. I do not see any "major" defects with this book, however, I cannot see the spine, staples, centerfold or if the cover is loose/detached. IMO... Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Crease at lower right corner that breaks color, a few minor spine ticks w/color break, small tear on outer edge, numerous locations with color rub (including lower left), some severe, minor staining on the rear cover. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. 17. Your title reads "Avengers 105" and the book pictured is "Avengers 195". Moderate top edge wear, discolored staples, blunted corners, moderate staining front and rear covers. There is no significant creasing/spine stress, color breaks, however, IMO, it is the staining that prevents this book from being a higher grade. 19. Considering that the book is in the FR 1.0 - FR/GD 1.5 range I do not think it will really matter. I have no real idea on what that paper is but it may be micro-chamber paper. From The Collectors Resource. "So why are the comic books not completely sealed inside? An article I found on the Library of Congress website gave a very good reason as to why paper products should not be sealed up air tight. "In the presence of moisture, acids from the environment (e.g., air pollution, poor-quality enclosures), or from within the paper (e.g., from the raw materials, manufacturing process, deterioration products), repeatedly cut the glucose chains into shorter lengths. This acid hydrolysis reaction produces more acids, feeding further, continued degradation." -You can read the full article on the Library of Congress website, here CGC adds a sheet of microchamber paper to the front and back inside covers of every comic book they encapsulate to help absorb those acids that are constantly being released from our comics, so then why can't they be sealed tight to keep the outside air pollutants and moisture from seeping in? Photo Courtesy of https://www.brooklyncomicshop.com/guide-taking-care-comics/ Well, in a communication I had with a representative from the company that supplies the microchamber paper to CGC, her response to the question of completely sealing any paper product in a sleeve (even with microchamber paper), was just awesome, Further to that, the chemicals may not all remain just as they are when released. That is to say, if by-product of deterioration A and B are both released, there is a concern that they will combine and form chemical AB, which may cause even further issues." She went on to say that "breathing, is the goal." Essentially all paper materials have a moisture content and sealed moisture along with the acids from the the paper and ink may in some cases accelerate the degradation of the paper. Interleaving paper, or "microchamber" paper that CGC adds to the inside of the books is designed to absorb some of the acids released by the paper in the comics, however if sealed air tight it could result in deterioration as well."
  20. Even though Marvel Chipping is a Bindery Defect there is no black and white answer as to how much of a grade deduction a book will recieve with Marvel Chipping, it will depend on the severity of the chipping and the overall condition of the book. I just saw a pic of an AF 15 that had the beginnings of Marvel Chipping with small tears on the outer edge but no real pieces missing, this book received a VF 8.0. Looking at your book I feel it is in the FN/VF 7.0 range even with the water stain on the rear cover (which I heard CGC is very strict on) so with the stain and chipping, my best educated guess without knowing how CGC actually determines grades would be anywhere from a VG/FN 5.0 - FN 6.0.
  21. My Sister just gave me a stack of lower grade Romance Books ranging from the 1950's through the 1970's that she asked me to sell for her, unfortunately I cannot determine a FMV for these books since they are not commonly for sale either on eBay or MCS, what is my alternative in this situation, The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. The Overstreet Price Guide and Grading Guide are great to have for reference and other comic book related info. Also the https://comicspriceguide.com/ is not even close on actual "Real" FMV of books selling today, they are Way Underpriced, not even close on many issues compared to what they are actually selling for at auction.
  22. I did not specifically look for any certain issue(s) unless I wanted to fill a hole in a specific run. In the early 80's I did have to come up with a list of issues for people to get me at Christmas or Birthday, but that was not even that specific, it was more or less a list of random books I would like to have (IE. Any F.F. issue from 5-20), I would also include books that were showing higher value in Overstreet than the others around it (I was curious as to why) incase they could not find my primary books, that is how I got my IH 181. (Christmas 82/83) Before eBay came along for me (2002/2003) I made monthly trips to the 4-5 LCS's in the area or to local shows. I had a budget/money in my pocket and bought what I found when I found it (if I could afford it) and was excited to find older books in the wild, I actually used to say when I found books in the wild I had never seen before. (Super Excited the first time I saw ST 114 in an LCS and it was only $5.00!!!) Unless these books were shown in an ad in a comic that I had or I had the book as a kid there was no way of knowing what the cover of these issues looked like (not condition, actual cover art) so it was a thrill to find/see these books. Then eBay came along and the anxiety changed from finding the books to will they arrive at all (USPS was bad) or in safe condition? 2009, prices for the books I needed/wanted (JIM/ST issues between 1-40) were getting out of hand, these books were not at the LCS's/Smaller shows and the bigger shows became more about "pop culture" than comic books and that is when I stopped buying, I think I have only bought 5 books since then (nothing expensive) to frame and display. The only thing I have been buying lately are the new Hasbro Retro Marvel Legends 3.75" Figures because they look just like the Silver Age characters I loved and enjoyed as a kid.
  23. Just by the wear on the front cover this book could have been a VG/FN 5.0 except for the following defects which lower the grade. 3/4"- 1" triangle missing from lower right corner, rusted top staple, creasing/tears on rear cover. moderate staining on rear cover. The biggest issue as far as grade is concerned would be the missing triangle. Although the front cover presents better than this, IMO this book is a... GD/VG 3.0 (Possibly a VG- 3.5) 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. 3.5 VERY GOOD- (VG-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 3.0 GOOD/VERY GOOD (GD/VG): Back to Top A used comic book showing some substantial wear. Cover shows significant wear, and may be loose or even detached at one staple. Cover reflectivity is very low. Can have a book-length crease and/or dimples. Corners may be blunted or even rounded. Discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor to moderate soiling is allowed. A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. Tape and other amateur repair may be present. Moderate spine roll likely. May have a spine split of anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2". Staples may be rusted or replaced. Minor to moderate staple tears and moderate stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present.
  24. They say "hindsight is 20/20", the question then becomes that if you were going to change the way you collected in the past are you aware of and have the knowledge you have now? When I originally started in late 64/early 65 I was 9 years old and the #1's were already 4 years old, 9 year old's in the mid 60's did not think about having to find used back issues of comic books, I was more focused on new issues and baseball cards. Then in 69 due to life events I had to leave them all behind and started over in 79 where I was married w/two kids, a house, two cars and money was tight so comic books were a luxury (or a BIG waste of money according to the wife), I had a hard time explaining how/why I spent $40.00 for an ASM 14 and Avengers 4, let alone a higher priced book. In the 90's I still had a very limited budget (living week to week) and again I had to justify to myself spending $35 each for an F.F. 11, 12, 13 or later on in the 90's spending $90.00 for a ST 110. I have since gotten all of the issues and completed the runs of titles I like except for the #1's (AF 15, ASM 1, Avengers 1, F.F. 1 IH 1, JIM 83, TOS 39, X-Men 1). My logical self says no, I would not have done anything differently, my OCD personality says I would have hunted down these issues in the 80's/early 90's and found away to justify the expense so I could sleep at night. So...Would anything actually be different...
