  1. Better to sell on the way up,,then on the way down.
  2. Possibly true. My guess was only that it would be someone who is new to comic art or doesn't collect at all.
  3. Wow Doc! That's just a tremendous display. Very classy.
  4. I agree. I Think this was a pretty cool solution to the problem. May have to use this trick on some art someday.
  5. anyone try Comic art tracker to do it? I totally forgot until after I did the bids. will try and not bid on HA tomorrow, but tracking a bunch over there too. ha ha.
  6. Hey folks, anyone else place tracking bids tonight? Original Art Auction Link
  7. Comic art has led me to Illustration art. Primary interest is 1950s and 1960s magazine illustration art. illustration gallery
  8. hi, I generally know what is available publicly, but hoping to hear from collectors that might have a cover by one of these 2 artists that is not posted for sale anywhere. let me clarify that - for example: it might be posted on CAF, but marked NSF or simply not posted on any site. Although I have certain preferences, I am leaving this request open to any covers - as I don't want to rule out anything before checking it out. you can pm here, or contact me via CAF. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=99534
  9. If the art wasn't making you happy - it was a good move to get out. Clearly this piece did; so congrats! While I expect to one day sell 90% or more as you did - I am still not ready. Trying however, to get rid of stuff to help pay for new aquisitions and keep the collection under control.
  10. Most of the items i love are well below the 100k . Although mr. Fish just listed iron man submariner #1 on CAF as for sale. He's taking offers. No idea what its worth. Wish- I could be a contender. So here are a couple of indy grails I would love to get. First Ken steacy - Vortex 1 cover. 2nd Peter Hsu Adventurers #1 and 3rd - a comic by Jim Lee .
  11. In case it wasn't clear, let me rephrase: my definition of new money is money that wasn't raised by selling one inflated asset to buy another. New money is new money to not just this hobby (comic art) but all hobbies...so taxable income, an inheritance, investment sale (Schedule D stuff), things like that. That's why I don't think dumping all your comics to buy art, especially if they're all CGC 9.8 examples, is new money! The death throes of one hobby giving fuel to the bubble of another isn't growth or anything approaching healthy and something that's long-range sustainable and predictable. -I think your point was clear. Let me give my response this way - even though I sell some stuff to help fund purchases, most of the funds necessarily need to be new money. Most collectors I meet like to hold on to what they have. That means one needs to spend new money as the old money is tied up in the existing collection (comics, art, toys, etc ..).
  12. I agree when its a private issue - but if its not - the comments area works for me. Would be genuinely curious your own take on comments. Should it be resreved for praise? If so why? Is comment count a measure of a piece of arts worth? Saying that because people usually dont comment to say negative stuff such as: "That art sucks." Or "you overpaid" Or other such rude comments. Again - just curious.
  13. You can go on caf and count the members . It would only take a bit of work if you wanted to know. I thought about doing this - but decided I was too lazy.
  14. I agree - if you are the one offering, you need to set a price.
  15. What is the objection folks have to comment counts? The comment area is a great space for more conversation about the art. I sometimes ask a question in the comments and love getting a response there from the owner Now anyone that comes across that art with the same question in mind has the answer. At the same time, If the comments back are just 'thank you' - well thats just polite and how can anyone truly object to manners?
  16. One thing to comsider is that you might need new collectors to buy what the old collectors are selling. Not just high end stuff - but anything and everything. I wonder if @Nexus or @romitaman could chime in - how many of your customers are new to the hobby? Or is it the same folks over and over? Personally - I became active in the hobby about 4 years ago. I see new folks on CAF all the time. Yes we all naturally collected comics at some point in the past - but that past could be a while back. Also for many the path into collecting art started with convention sketches. As it did for me. That is new art - not recycled art - and therefore possible new money into the hobby.
  17. Big congrats. Jamie is a great artist. Love his sense of humour. Even liked the tank girl movie. For those that care- Taschen is putting out a new book on Hewlett shortly.
  18. Sorry to say I am not the guy with the hat that everyone was so chatty about in the other thread! God save the queen.
  19. You make some great points @vodou. Until now, I just assumed everyone on here was loaded. Wanted to clarify my point too: My point/observation was that in other art collecting fields there is naturally more secrecy simply because there is no popular public forum like CAF. So in those collecting categories, collectors and their collections are not as widely known by their fellow hobbiests.
  20. Another great listen! With respect to a question from Matt Todd - about secrecy and fresh to market etc.. it occured to me that these questions might be unique to our hobby. What other art collecting hobbies are made as public as ours? At the centre of that is CAF - a virtual museum of thousands of collections. Such that folks who choose not to share - seem to be a mysterious breed.
  21. That is so true! Glad to hear CAT and CAF are working together.
  22. I thought Rich O's concept of creator owned series as lacking long term collectibility very interesting. I know there are exceptions (sandman, cerebus?), but do others agree that for series/characters that are no longer published - this is true? Rich - how would you classify Y the last man? Or is that differeny because its by different artists?
  23. Looking for your 2 cents. I have a piece of art where the character is a stat, but there is art underneath. Most likely its the same image slightly smaller or shifted a bit. Was considering having the piece restored professionally - but wanted opinions if removing a stat to show the art was a good idea or not. Again - it would be done by a professional. So it would look nice. My question arises because now the cover will likely not look 100% as published since the published piece relied on the stat. What do you think?
