Ugh, score of a lifetime there...
Being about 30 minutes late was a major bummer, not to mention I actually wanted this book for my own collection oh well.
On another note, You would think the seller would spend 1 minute looking up what this book is worth before listing it.
Especially since its a major key.

Not me, was about 30 mins late to the party when this was listed.
And the sale is legit checked his feedback toady.

Luckily Darkseid has a chin protector.

Based on pure villainy I would have to go with Darkseid.
But I might be a bit biased...

My guess is comics are heavier than trading cards and the physics involved would make the books more vulnerable to damage from SCS with this design.
That is what I was thinking too.
The only thing is, the book is already susceptible too that based on the current design.
Most SCS examples happens in 3 main places
1. The corners
2.The top, bottom and side edge of the book creating overhang
3.The staples
While we are on the subject, why do the inner wells have that small raised area above the corners?
Anybody know the reason for them?
-
Not sure if this has ever been discussed but does anyone know why CGC inner wells do not have completely free corners?
I am not talking about those inner wells made for modern thin books the other ones they use on thicker/older books.
Here is a picture which will make it clear, a PSA holder corner.
We have all seen books with either top or bottom corners slightly folded over due to how the corner can touch the edge in the inner well.
Curious if anyone knows why CGC has not designed an inner well with untouchable corners?

We would really need to see pics of the whole book. Depending on the grade of the rest of the book it may have a minimal affect on the grade. However, CGC usually slams even small stains . You also need to see if the 'stain' permeates the cover. I don't think it will affect the grade much but as with all things CGC, 'it depends'.
When I receive the book i will post high quality pics and also have an idea of whats going on.

It may simply be a stain. However, it is white. I guess you will have to look closely when you get it in hand.
If it was a water stain how much would a stain of this size effect grade?

cool! I asked about OPG because some stores will still look at it for a book like this, so there is a chance for taking advantage of market inefficiency. I remember 4 or 5 or 6 years ago the OPG price was half the going internet rate, maybe less, so if you could find one in a store priced via OPG you could make money (which I did, twice)
I like many others used to live by the OPG.
Unfortunately in today's market its borderline useless for anything hot because prices move week to week.

Can someone list GPA for ASM 129 in various grades 2.0 - 8.5. I am cheap and lazy and want to profit from your knowledge. (Not a comment on the OP, just a self observation.)
ASM 129 is one of 3 books with free GPA stats.
Just click test drive on the homepage.
The other books available include: Hulk 181 and Fantastic Four 48

I've often considered resubbing my ToS39 CR-OW to see if it gets a page bump, but I hate the idea of sending it on a road trip. If it went from CROW to OW, or possibly OW-W, would that be worth it, value-wise? I buy about one book every five years, literally, so I don't subscribe to GPA.
In todays market, from my experience, without going extreme like tan to off white or worse, page quality does not seem to be a big deal. Sure you have those who will wait and opt out of buying a book with worse PQ but today Cream to off white for hot keys seem to sell just as well for the same money as a white page copy.
Unless the book looks creamy, dark edged or tanned from the front or back cover and has less eye appeal itself then you should not have a problem selling it for similar prices as a WP or OW to W copy. Especially for a big key key like ToS 39.
I personally would not risk it.

Your Right! But that's the way that I always under stood it ....
I called CGC once to ask about reholdering and they told me that the micro-chamber paper is switched out when the book gets a reholder.
So the inner well gets replaced as well.

inside the slab, the book is in an "inner well", which is kind of sealed, so presumably when a reholder happens.... they don't "reholder all of it" .... the inner well just goes into a new slab, so the book is not touched by human hands, this is what "checked for damage" means....
This is the way I understand it
That would make even less sense for a page quality bump since they cant even see the inner pages.

that's a good gosh darn point guys!
and it's not like it could be prescreened it as keeping the 9.8 before they cracked it out
now Im mystified.
This raises the question, when CGC gets a book in for reholdering does the book get checked at all or is just the slab checked to make sure it was not tampered with?
followed by re encapsulation without any kind of look threw the book.
-

that would be my assumption.
Why would someone take a risk resubmitting a 9.8 key like SS #1 though?
Unless CGC know that back in the day the lighting was bad and when they get old gen 1 holders they re check the PQ?

Spot on.
Interesting, so the Boston copy was resubed instead of reholdered.

Boston’s are super-super glossy and “fresh” looking.
As mentioned (after the above post), CGC has been inconsistent over the years WRT page quality. I had a book go from LT/OW to OW/W on a resub.
That said, when they assign W pages to a book, it’s almost always deserved.
So when a book is sent for a reholder cgc can change PQ but will they also change grades sometimes?

page quality is one of many things CGC struggles with being consistent on and the general consensus is they were hard on earlier submissions.
Someone made a youtube video where they were cracking out cgc slabs in the old label (gen 1) with Cream to off white pages that looked nicer then books cracked out of (gen 2) holders with off white to white.

Interesting, I have heard that old labels sometimes come back with better PQ after reholder because back in the day CGC didn't have the best lights for grading.
Even in the high grade range like 9.2-9.8 it still seems almost impossible to find with WPs. I have never come across a book, in the same era with so few WP copies.
Maybe I just don't have a big enough sample size but after looking threw Heritage, eBay, Comic Connect,Clink and MCS it seems rare in any grade TBH.

Trying to upgrade my Silver Surfer #1 CGC 7.5 and can't seem to find one with white pages. Searched on heritage sold archives, looked at books from 8.0-9.2 and while they exist its damn near impossible to find a copy with white pages.
Is there something about the book that makes it hard to find with WPs? I guess I got lucky when I bought my 7.5 copy

Almost every villain.
Seriously has there ever been a villain (b list or below) that has held value after its big movie/tv moment?
Even the big A list villains tend to go down after the dust settles from the initial movie/TV debut, at least for a little while.
For everything else its almost always a downward spiral for eternity.
I do not understand why people "invest" in these type of books when they reach outrageously high prices.
