The slight (P) books i have, - heck even the mod/ext ones - i love them. And without the purple stigma i wouldnt own them.

Agreed. Kinda regretting not buying the Action Comics 1 I saw for sale at the turn of the century.  I did snag a complete set of Spiderman 1 - 35 for 5k in 2004 off of eBay. That was a nice score. Only 2 restored comics out of the whole bunch; very minor.

I would had never would think these books would be worth so much.

I'm actually surprised that with all the very wealthy people in the USA alone that more of them don't collect or "invest in" high end/grade Gold (and Silver) books. Even upper and mid grade hard to come by GA books.  People are inheriting 100's of thousands and millions all over every day and many are already pretty well off. Add to that the thousands of super rich people. Glad more of them aren't.

Reminds me of my George RR Martin theory a couple of years ago when auction prices of mainly Silver and Bronze went haywire. Someone like him who is definitely worth a few hundred million at least (I think he's a billionaire) could just outbid everyone on everything if they wanted to. One person with a boatload of money could win every high grade or scarce book at any price it takes and with that drive up the prices that lower grade copies sell for. Like what happened with TMNT #1 a few years back.  I would be that guy if If won the megapowerball lottery for hundreds of millions.

Yep, all very true. Our friend lou_fine here has said that many times about the Berk auction and I'm living proof. That "auction event" it was really pulled me into Golden Age. Just wish I bid on a few. I remember thinking at the time being surprised on how many of his books had restoration, most (or all) were slight to moderate but I was still kinda surprised.

I never had the chance to meet Mr. Berk but I always say if it's good enough for Jon it's good enough for me.

To address the title of this thread I wouldn't go as far as calling them Crazy Amounts. A lot of slight and moderate restored books seem to be selling for half or nearly half of what the previous comparable Blue label sale went for, when I guess in the past if a restored book went for 25% of a comparable Blue label copy that was a lot. Some restored I've seen sell for about the same as the previous Blue lable in about the same grade. Interesting indeed.

I purchased a Superman 1 for 30k in 2012, I may be able to sell it for near 150k (source HA).  I purchased a Batman 1 for 35k, I can sell it also for near 100k.  I can sell my Dec 27 for north of 375k and I think I purchased it around 2000 for 18k.  Just saying the prices now are crazy.

Because sellers of unrestored copies can purchase a mansion after a sale.  Collectors who can't afford to pay a mansion price for a mega-key but still want to own one have accepted that they have to settle for restored books.

Very true. I remember years ago when many people said I was crazy to buy restored books.  While not the majority of my books, they are worth the most. One, it's hard to let them go now. Two, the pool of people able to afford them is getting lower and lower.  My restored Batman 1, Superman 1, DC 1 and DC 27; all restored; have jumped sky-high out of no where. I also have a 4.0 AM 15 I paid 5k for in 2005. I was shocked when someone offered me 26k for it.

    I am thinking we're in a bubble.

No. They are beautiful the way they are. If you decided to sell, you would be making a bundle on your investment anyway.

Having the highest graded copy of a book is mostly an ego thing. And, there is probably an ungraded copy just waiting to dethrone yours.

There is always some out there with a bigger p p than you. Live with it.

That being said, cool books and thanks for posting them.

Thank you for the kind words.  No ego, just thought it was a bit unique to have the then highest graded AC 100.

Yeah, that "#" is a typo. But there were indeed 1939 and 1940 issues of New York World's Fair. They are both cool 100-page issues, with early appearances of a number of DC heroes.

Way off topic, but one of my fave bits of early DC trivia relates to the 1939 NYWF issue. It was originally priced at 25 cents, but since all other comics to date were 10 cents, it apparently kind of bombed. (In today's dollars I guess it would be like pricing a new comic at $10 or $15, *and* advance printing a gazillion of them without really knowing the level of demand.)

DC then belatedly reduced the book's price from 25 cents to 15 cents to squeeze out more sales... but a number of kids/parents had already sent in 25 cents for the book via mail order... so when the 1939 NYWF was mailed out, a copy of either **Superman #1 or Superman #2** was 'thrown in' to make up for the 10-cent difference. :)

Too bad those guys who received the SM1 and SM2 didn't keep them around..  They'd be worth tens of thousands; if not more.

Why? If you're looking to sell, then sure. If not, then why take the risk? There's so many horror stories from CGC lately (I know it's a small percentage of their transactions, but still) I wouldn't take that risk unless absolutely necessary.

Miss the fact I had the highest grade. It was one of the main reasons why I purchased AC 100 at a premium back then.

Lol so it came off creepy lol

Indeed. Realize it comes from a place of love for the hobby in sincerity.

You've been here long enough that you should know these peeps have "been through things on the boards." Like deceivers and wise guys. Better they be on guard than to have the boards like the wild west.

Still, that's why I curbed the thought, as in, your not trying to strike a deal or sell to con anyone. As those types have been around since the start of the boards, the usual perspective is to double check.

You were casual in posting, but to most not in those shoes, these books are a big deal.

Try not to take it the wrong way lol

Was just sharing some pics, wasn't trying to garner or solicit sales from anyone.

I wouldnt be that over zealous to prove anything,  unless you feel to do it, probably feels like 15 years ago. If all obtained around the same time frame, it can be convoluted.

Still I remember my books of perhaps when and where only if it is impacted by a time or experience. Those are a few books, I've seen if they're the only slabs that it may be easy to miss.

Dotting I and crossing t is fine, but this isnt a deal gone bad, no need to feel threatened, outed, nor over zealous.

I thought the same when it was mentioned to do pics of safety deposit box, normally of such books, it would seem of course you keep pics already? Since maybe not, you're doing fine accumulating, a sense of enjoying the hobby and medium, so dont bend over backwards  :whee:

Not threatened, but I post a few pics of some not so special comics in the community, and people look up dates on when they were last sold? Crazy. Why would anyone make up something that they had these books?  There's really nothing special about them. Though, it kinda sucks I no longer have the highest graded AC 100. I have the appraisals on file for each of the books from Value My Stuff, but I do not keep pics of the comics.

You should try to work a trade with Metropolis if you want to swap books for an Action 1.  If you sell the books and buy the Action 1, you get hit with capital gains taxes.  Not so with a trade.  Metropolis probably knows where a couple of lower grade copies are at all times.  That's what I would do in your shoes.

Ordinarily I would not swap the Detective 1 for anything as that is one of my favorite books of all time and is exceedingly rare in any grade.  But if we are talking about it from an investment perspective, Action 1 will appreciate faster into the future.

Care to lend me 500k? ;'p

They are just things.  If they give you pleasure hold.  If you want money to buy other things or enable experiences - then sell.  There is also pleasure to be gained by letting others buy your books to achieve their dreams.

I don't see a huge point in holding the D 1 CGC 8.5(R) if you had thoughts of selling.  Financially, if you paid $10K over 20 years ago and it is now worth $100K, then your rate of return is less than 10.5% per year.  That beats the Dow at 7.09%, but if you'd bought a blue chip like Amazon you'd have made an !8%+ rate of return (over $400K value today) and not paid for any insurance.  If you're having thoughts of selling, then that suggests the pleasure is not worth the hassle.

True, but Tec 1 is pretty hard to come by. Seeing what the mid grades restored are selling on HA is crazy..

if this is all documented you might have a case for breech of contract with financial loss.

Can't fight a mega corp like Heritage. Not Elon Musk..  However, if they f#cked me over on some games, I just don't trust them not to f@ck me over on my comics. Granted, I am sure Rick is a good guy, but that person who I dealt with, who's now a director I see, horrible. If they can promote garbage like that, forget it. I probably purchased 30k + from Heritage over the years. I wouldn't spend a dime with them. Fire that person, we'll talk. Yes, I know that won't happen. However, as I sell off my collection, an auction house may get the option.. I know one that will never get them.. Heritage. That's a big chunk of change off of the collection. I cannot support company who screws over a loyal (former) customer.

Wow you have a collection most would give anything to have. Hard to give advice to someone I should probably listen to.

I wouldn't sell unless you are in some sort of hardship or see another opportunity to "invest" into something that would give the same kind of pleasure. I sold all my Avengers and FF collection for an epic long-range fishing trip out of San Diego and don't regret it a bit (now I probably could have gone on two trips). I think like a lot of others on here that the books I have in my collection give me a special kind of comfort and joy that only I understand. My wife of 26 years could care less. My son on the other hand loves it the way I do so it all goes to him. Anything I sell (usually duplicates) whether $1 or $10,000 goes to finding issues I am missing.

    Good luck!

I hear ya. My family couldn't care less about them either. They just think there a comic book. I showed my wife my Batman 1 once after we saw the movie, she said, oh, you collect comic books.. I said what do you think this is worth? She said, it says .10. I said.. Hmm.. Try 60k. She flipped out. Anyways, it's nice to have them as a financial backup in case I need them, but to own them is just something I never thought I'd be able to do. It's like owning a Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth rookie card; just worth more..  lol.

'Tec #1 isn't my thing, so why not sell? I don't imagine that it will depreciate in the near-future, but the list of prospective buyers will likely get smaller and smaller down the road.

It really is a beautiful comic, but yea, as these comics reach the stratosphere, the limited amount of buyers is a concern.
