  1. I blame myself. Whenever I invest in something it is bound to tank. I recently sold two of the pink Harley Quinn covers in 9.8 for under $300 each. If I had just held on to the books and sold them raw I could have done much better. By the time I got my books back from CGC it was too late. It only took about two months too which isn't bad. I saw a couple of sales in the $950 range at the peak. I still made a nice little profit but it could have been much much better. One recently sold in open auction by another seller for just barely over $200. 1000 were printed which isn't a ton but it seems like a lot of them are 9.8s. Too many apparently. Interestingly enough, there are 82 9.8 Blues and 133 total of the Pink variant and only 57 9.8 Blues and 76 total of the regular Color variant on the CGC census. No idea how many of the raws of the color are 9.8 candidates. Would be interesting to see how both of these do long term after accounting for inflation. Meanwhile, there are 117 9.8 Blues and 212 total of the HQ #1 Cover A and 41 9.8 Blues and 112 total of Cover B on census.
  2. Agreed on the effect. Books featured on CBSI tend to become really hot (at least for the short term). Somewhat annoying when it's a series I'm collecting since the sudden feeding frenzy tends to drive up prices.
  3. Just received my Skottie Young baby variants order. Bought them for the cover but this one looked like the interior might actually be interesting. Pretty fun read. I had to look up the publication date as the contents (particularly Marvelpocalypse NOW by Elliott Kalan and Jacob Chabot) still seem quite apt for Marvel NOW! This was apparently published back in 2013. I guess the only change since is Marvel is pushing the Inhumans now.
  4. Best to ask them via Twitter or Facebook (couldn't find a phone number). Given price difference between a normal copy and certified 9.8, I think they'll probably come slabbed. Besides, with shipping risk, etc, the only way to guarantee the book will remain a 9.8 is slabbing. Heck, even then, slabbing's not a guarantee but it's the best bet. Also, the listings specifically mention Signature Gold and Universal Blue labels.
  5. True. We don't know their ratios. Given ebay sales though, Dell'Otto covers seem pretty in demand so I wouldn't be at all surprised if orders for the 1:50 chase variant would far exceed the demand required for the regular covers to qualify for the variant if it were priced lower. Wouldn't be at all surprised if some of those preordering from DCBS, etc were from folks looking for a quick flip on ebay. Kinda sucks for collectors who'd have to pay super high prices just to add this to their personal collection. That said, Midtown would probably have it for cheaper but you'd have to get in your order quickly. They're first come, first serve once the incentive variants are posted for sale. Mind, I don't think I'd be willing to pay $50 much less $100 for this sight unseen. Dell'Otto does some really good work but there's a bunch of his stuff I don't really care for (e.g. JL vs SS #1 Bulletproof Comix).
  6. I wouldnt say they are price gouging, its just capitalism supply/demand. Certain Faux News comic sites and groups have created a dell'otto bubble, so all his variants get sold out on DCBS quickly. Raising the price to prevent it from selling out isnt really price gouging, just proper business sense. Eventually the Pump-n-Dumps won't be able to shill Dell'Otto's books any higher and a new equilibrium point will be found. This pretty much. The lower the price point on a highly desirable item, then the more people are going to buy that item. Here's a hypothetical scenario: The Dell'Otto goes for $50 instead of $100 and at the lower price point, there are now 100 people who order the variant. If there are only 1000 orders for the regular cover, DCBS would only have 20 Dell'Otto variants available leaving 80 preorders high and dry. In order to fulfill all the 100 variant preorders, DCBS would have to purchase 5,000 of the regular covers of which 4,000 would go unsold. Max Standard discount for Marvel is 59%. Revenue: 1,000 * $2.39 + 100 * $50 = $7,390 Cost: 5,000 * $3.99 * 41% + 100 * $3.99 * 41% = $8,343 Operating at a loss? Typically not good business practice.
  7. Since this one is 1:50, I reckon you're guaranteed to get it at that price since you're essentially paying for 50 of the regular covers. Guess DCBS is expecting this one to be pretty popular. large group of people hitting them hard on all the Dell'otto's variants that come out, they will price it according to demand. $100 on a 1:50 is very high compared to traditional 1:50 pricing. I figure that might be the only way they can guarantee that everyone who preorders the variant gets a copy. Seems like the chase variant pricing is based on their expected demand for both variant and regular covers. Wild Storm #1 Jim Lee 1:50 $75 Wild Storm #1 B&W 1:100 $150 Kingpin #1 Sienkiewicz 1:50 $50 Elektra #1 Sienkiewicz 1:50 $100 Bullseye #1 Sienkiewicz 1:50 $100 IvX #4 Dodson 1:50 $50 IvX #5 Dell'Otto 1:50 $100 For the Dell'Otto, I think they're making you pay a small margin on the 50 regular covers, too. They probably figure they can't sell all the regulars they have to buy just to get the Dell'Otto.

  9. Curious, do they reprint single issues or do you collect the really nice looking slipcase HCs? One of these days, I might delve into that once I've run out of good stuff to read on Marvel Unlimited. Personally, if I can't get any copy for a reasonable price in print (floppy, HC or TPB), I'm more than fine reading digital at a fraction of the secondary market cost.
  10. Umm, wouldn't cherry picking be a necessity in order to guarantee a 9.8 grade? At the very least, I would assume the seller would inspect the books to make sure they make the grade before shipping them out. I have absolutely nothing against the practice of selling guaranteed 9.8s for a higher price. If someone is willing to pay for that privilege, then that's their purview. Heck, CGC slabs sell for higher than raws because of the condition guarantee. What would be abhorrent is if someone sold a 9.8 guaranteed raw at a much higher than normal price and it's really just a 9.6 or 9.4.
  11. Exactly !!!! Decided to check completed listings and a few BINs and auctions stood out - 2x $80 and 1x $90. Assuming those aren't shills and were purchases made by "investors", then ouch. Talk about buying high. Alas, I doubt they'll find actual collectors to offload to who would be willing to pay that much.
  12. Yep. This. I had Thunderbolts #7 Checchetto 1:25 variant pre-ordered from DCBS way back in September. DCBS still hadn't filled it while all my other pre-orders for the week of November 30 has shipped so decided to grab a copy from Midtown or ebay as the Bucky / Kobik cover was very pretty. I was quite surprised to find it out of stock from online retailers and there was only one copy selling on ebay and the bidding had already gone up to $34. Honestly couldn't understand why given Thunderbolts has been steadily losing monthly sales (I believe last ish was down to 16K) and earlier issues can be found frequently in dollar bins. A quick Google search shows this was featured as a hot pick on CBSI. Alas, my LCS doesn't have it either. They've cut down on their Thunderbolts order because it just wasn't selling and they still have a lot of back issues on shelf. I'm probably one of the few customers buying this title. I've got a $15 limit for variants so I think I'll just wait for this to go back to more sane pricing in case DCBS cancels my order.
  13. I've recently added this to my pull list. I've only read the first issue and so far, so good. I got issues 1 and 3 from the LCS but they didn't have a copy of issue 2. , I think I've been reading too much noir recently - Fatale, Fade Out, Criminal, Velvet and now Black Monday Murders. Too much Brubaker, too.
  14. I believe so. I have more that I haven't put up yet. Would you like me to get you a full list of what I have? Yes, I'd appreciate that. Thanks!
  15. Really like the Supergirl and Spider-Gwen covers. I think the Harley Quinn's probably worth the most monetarily but honestly, not a fan of that and the Power Girl covers.
  16. Interested in the Captain America raws signed by Steve Epting (@ $5ea). These are from the Brubaker run, yes? If so,
  17. This just arrived c/o boardie mad-dogz. Wish I could've gotten more of his SS Skottie Young baby variants but I was always too late on the draw.
  18. Thanks. Guess that one should have been obvious.
  19. So I've tried Google search and I've also looked at various comics glossaries and terminologies but couldn't find an answer. I'm doing my regular Previews catalog pre-order and notice (MR) on a bunch of Image Comics listings. Anyone know what it means?
  20. that 421000 figure seems fishy. My LCS didnt sell but a few. Between 300,000 - 400,000 went to Loot Crate so somewhere between 21,625 - 121,625 went to LCS, etc. Lower end of the scale seems about right.
