  1. Oops, sorry. Richard Carlson. And another horse. "Dave! My name is Dave!"
  2. No worries Maurice, nice to see some of the old Miller reprints. Nice as they are, this thread is for the first printing UK price variants of the US originals. They look like this So what I am saying in a roundabout way is "never post a reprint in this thread again" you Silly Old Sod

  4. Hello Bracks This thread might help as it shows the four slab types to date: Ebay sellers are selling second hand slabs of course, so match the slab type in this thread to the one in the eBay picture you're interested in and you'll know what you're getting. Good luck
  5. Cheers Bob! If Charlton were involved it probably stands for 'Rules Violation' Gotta love the rule breakers...
  6. Sooper! Thanks Maurice Did I just see Oakman in here? Must have been a dream. Seasoned Veterans are rarely seen in Penceland. Still, maybe he's looking for bugs. There's a rumour there's a big one out there somehwere but I haven't seen it myself. Knowing my luck it's behind me! Ha ha ha...
  7. Marwoods this, Marwoods that. Why don't I ever get a mention
  8. Alas no. I was watching it though. There were two lots, but both went higher than I hoped - I'd have bid if they stayed a bit lower. Seem quite popular lately don't they. Never know what's inside....
  9. Another photo of Bababooey. Where do you keep getting them!?
  10. Cheers Maurice, for all your input. I haven't seen a W&Vs with a pence stamp yet but have captured lots of pictures for the two main titles (you can see the summary sheets in my earlier post). I will drop Dez a line. Have emailed him in the past and he's good on UK comic history. I got the Monsters #3 off eBay for £1.59. Bargain!
  11. Nine hours and nothing!? Oi, @tv horror! Get your Irish arse over here and appreciate my bloody Charlton Monster comics
  12. Jeepers. Did you have a poo sandwich for dinner today?
  13. I picked up a BB #61 finally. Very hard to find these are: Still no sign of Popeye. But as the recent Journey into Mystery #65 shows (see Marvel pence thread) you can never say never. Zero interest in this thread though still which is a shame. Seems to be the same with Archie, Dell and Gold Key. I thought this site was full of comic lovers?
  14. Here, have a look at this: Handsome isn't he What? What's it doing here? Well, I'll tell you. Charlton did magazines as well you know and I've been looking to see if there are any pence copies out there. Here's the evidence: Looks promising doesn't it. The Monsters #3 above appears to be a recovered copy of 'Horror Monsters Presents Black Zoo #1'. Here's the US of A original (note T&P price stamp!): The interiors are the same so it looks a bit like the DC Thorpe & Porter 'Double Double' Comics, where someone used remaindered US originals and stuck a unique UK cover around them (see my DC Pence thread). Here's the inside of the Monsters #3 'repackaged' copy: You can see the original staples showing and that the 'new' cover has been stapled after the event in a different place. Naughty RV! And yes, it's those 'RV' people again (see earlier posts about 'who are RV'?). At least I think it is. As well as the above, I've looked into two Charlton Horror Magazine titles: Mad Monsters - which ran for 10 issues in the early 1960's Horror Monsters - which also ran for 10 issues in the early 1960's Copies of many issues exist with what looks liked hand placed UK price stamps on them. Given that there are only ten issues of each title, the UK price stamps are all over the place with little consistency in format, placement etc. And in some cases, there are different stamps for the same issue. Take Mad Monsters #6: We have one copy with a straightforward 2/6 price (which looks printed): ...and another with the RV Shield stamp (which looks hand applied): Printed 2/6 ? Hand applied RV Shield 2/6 ? Even though the issue is number 6 in US terms, some of the UK stamped copies say 'New Series No.3' which is odd. I haven't found any meaningful correlation with the other issues on which this 'New Series' numbering exists. It seems completely random. Here's a few other stamp types: One or two issues look like the UK price could have been a printed one. But there are many examples where the positioning changes between copies indicating after production application - example here: So it looks like RV - whoever they were - had an arrangement of some sorts to distribute these US books in the UK. Some may be printed with a UK price, but most appear hand stamped. Somebody then snagged four books from the three titles I've mentioned so far and 'recovered' them (the Monsters #3 earlier - there are four known copies of 'Monsters' with unique UK covers, although none appear on the GCD) Quite interesting in a way. I'll keep digging.
  15. I LOVE YOU! Part 69 "Does he love me? Or does he only want my kisses?" "Only suitable for kissing? Don't be silly Daphne. You're a great **** too!" "Ahem! Dinner is served" "Hey, is it suitable for eating Smithers? Ha ha ha!" "Yes Sir. Very good Sir..." I LOVE YOU! Part 69
  16. Thanks Jim! A nice sunny morning of Charlton pottery is in course I'm up to 385 of the 448 confirmed of the 833 possible so far: So uncommon are these books that terrible condition often goes with the territory. I don't mind really, as it sort of suits the mood. My quest is less about value / condition, and more about preserving (informing?) the knowledge of what exists for all those Charlton fans in the future. Yes, them two. But it is nice once in a while to get a bright, clean copy - here's Space War #17 from July 1962: That's a great cover isn't it. Something about the colouring with a u and the lack of wordage that makes it striking. Now Freddy here isn't in technically bad shape, but the cover stamp could have been kinder I may have to take it back to the Book Centre - they have branches all over London you know - to get my 3d exchange

  18. "Matt Murdock, PGX head grader, restoration detection specialist, and autograph authenticator speaking, how may I direct your call?" "Who was it Matt?" "Oh just that Isaac bloke again. I tell you, every time I man the phones, Newton rings"
