Your (most emotional) collecting milestones to date
grapeape replied to exitmusicblue's topic in Original Comic Art
September 2, 2006 goes down as the worst night in Grapeape’s life. On that night I found my brother dead at his home in Lake Elsinore, Ca. He was a young man of 37 years with two sons. As kids we lost ourselves in the world of comics. Sprawled on the floor reading, comics everywhere. He was my best friend and losing him took a big piece of me away. In high school my brother was discovering a talent for art. Once given an assignment to choose a master painter/sketcher he went his own way and to the best of his ability rendered his version of our Michelangelo’s remarkable achievements. My friends here will forgive that this is amateur art. My brother ChrisApe after Kirby. Emotional as this was gifted to me from my brother before he passed away. -

Some reasons I’m missing examples of artists listed below are related to finances obviously. The other reason is not finding the right example (for me). Except for the first year of collecting I have fought the urge to complete a checklist. You know, “hey its Bill Everett 1941, you have one panel with Sub-Mariners elbow...” Alex Toth....I have a book of his art Wally Wood...where to start Robert Crumb,..related to Charles Bukowski Steranko Nick Fury agent of Shield 1 cover Lou Fine Will Eisner Mac Raboy Flash Gordon Tradd Moore SSB Joe Simon Cap Alex Raymond Hal Foster Anything Phantom Stranger. There’s one nut out there drives the price up on all the artists.

Lou Fine and Joe Sinnott are two artists that never lost their shine in my eyes. -

BuraddoRun you answered the call!!!! This is a great topic. When making your point don’t forget the influence inkers may have had on your “declining” artist of choice. Carlo started to touch on that. For Byrne it’s easier as he did a lot of later work ALL without an inker. While I do see work I didn’t like as much with John I did find his Spider-Man Chapter One work charming. Pablo Marcos (good man) as an inker I think ruined a few Pollard and Perez pages. Jack Abel mauled John Buscema’s Marvel Fanfare Silver Surfer art. Vinnie “the eraser” Colletta erased many of Jacks intricate background pencils on books like Thor to save time 😭 With that in mind imagine Jack Kirby with Joe Sinnott excellent. Then seventies Giacoia Very Very good. Then D Bruce Berry. An inker can contribute to an artists decline. -

grapeape replied to glenbru's topic in Original Comic Art Marketplace
Wait a minute. During ComicArt Live Episode 16 did Ray Cuthbert actually say??? ( 14:17-14:37) concerning San Mateo Art ( Los Bros ) in 1986 that 1) While inquiring about a page he wanted he was.......... a) told the page had already sold and was steered towards two other pages he did not ask for? b) The following Catalog (San Mateo- Los Bros) came out with the same page Ray originally wanted, told was already sold, now listed at a higher price? The legend grows. -
